Washington, Oetobcr 18.—An ex
amination of the laws of South Caroli

Gov. Chamberlain denounces as illegal
and strictly forbidden by the laws of
the State, are regularly chartered by
the Legislature, under the name of
“Rifle Clubs.” There are a large num
ber of colored companies chartered in
the same way.
Fortress Monroe, October 17.—
Gcu. Barry received telegraphic in
structions from Washington this morn
ing to send four companies of artillery
from this post at once to Columbia, S.
C., to report to Major-General Huger,
commanding the Department. Com

der ; Company G, 1st Artillery, Cap
tain Samuel S. Elder; Company A. 3d
Artillery, Capt. L. Lorain, and Compa
ny C, 5th Artillery, Captain Wallace
F. Randolph, were designated to leave
for that place to-morrow morning. This
leaves only one company for duty.
Providence, October IS.—Battery
B, First United States Artillery, and
ten men from Battery Iv, now at Fort
Adams, have received orders to pro
ceed forthwith to Columbia, S. C.
Washington, October 18—Came
ron’s order to Sherman reached him at
the theatre last night. He immedi
ately repaired to the telegraph office
and gave the necessary orders to Gen
eral Hancock, commanding the De
partment of the Atlantic. The order
was a complete surprise to every one
outside of the War Office people.
THE CAIN HOY TRO VISITS.
CHARLESTON, October 18.-All has
been quiet tO'day atCaiuhoy. A small
force af armed citizens from Charleston
remain in the village, tlm residents
fearing that if this guard is withdr wn
their homes will be fired. News was
received to-night that a company of
United States troops are on the way
from Columbia to Cainhoy which caus
es great satisfaction. The President’s
proclamation causes no excitement and
little comment here.

rpFIE POLITICAL CAMPAIGN OF 1-67,
I which include:'. National, Statean 1 conn j
lections and which will undoubtedly be 1
most active and hotly contested of any
cethe memorable canvass of 1.960, is now
rly opened. The National Democratic I
r ty will this year make a bold, vigorous. j
d doubtless successful struggle for the !
maintainance and supremacy of those prin-J
ciples which are vital to the prosperity of
the Republic aud essential to the well-being
of the people.
In addition to the Presidential election,
the people of Georgia and Florida will elect
new State governments. In Florida the
campaigns promises to he unusually vigor
ous, and there is a nrobability that for tbe
first time i ; t. . .he people of that
Radical-ri iiien . sn.e w — elect a Democratic
State government. In these campaigns the
people of the Sotitii are deeply interested ;
and evc-ry intelligent citizen, who has the
welfare of his country and his section at
heart, should acquaint, liimself with every
detail of the great work of redemption and
reform that is now going on.
To this end he should subscribe to and ns
sist iu circulating the SAVANNAH MORN
ING NEWS, an independent Democratic
newspaper, of pronounced opinions and fear
less in their expression; a paper that is
recognized everywhere as the best daily in
the South. Its editorial department is vig
orous. thoughtful, and consistent, while its
news and local departments are marvels of
industry and completeness. Its department
of Georgia aud Florida affairs is not confin
ed to a mere barren summary ot events
transpiring in those States, but is enlivened
by comment at once apt, timely, and racy.
The ample resources of the establishment
will be devoted to furnishing the readers of
the
MORNING NEWS.
with the latest intelligence from till parts of
the world, through the press dispatches,
special telegrams, and by means of special
correspondence ; and through these agencies
the paper will be the earliest chronicle - of
every noteworthy incident of the political
campaign of 1876.
