BoWer, sub-elector for this county. We are authorized by him to say that he will, eithe* in pefStffc of by some competent proxy, be present ithef erer his services may be needed, either to organize clubs, make addresses or do any other work pertinent to hfe duties as sub-elector. In this connection dMfetfge ttpon District Clubs the necessity effect ing more thorough organization and can ▼assing their respective Districts. If speak- 1 era are needed, an application to the Comi ty Executive Comraitte of Capt. Bowes will secure one or more and, as a general rule, those whose services can be command ed would prefer that the preference of the club or district meeting should be des ignated at the time the request is forward ed. Fellow-Citizens of Decatur County : Having been appointed sub-elector for this county, in accordance with a resolu tion passed at the meeting of the State Democratic Executive Committee, held in .Atlanta on the inst. I shall under take the arduous duties assigned me with cheerfulness, believing that I shall have the hearty co-operation of all good citizens. I think it important that a conference be had with the Eiecmive Committee of the county and that of each district, aw early as practicable for the purpose" of con sidering plane for the organisation of the party and conducting the campaign'. My earnest desire is ibe success of the Demo cratic liberal Repufcßcan ticket and I will bend every energy to the accomplishment of that great end. I ecttfidehtfy believe that if we will do our whole' dtrty. that We will be rewarded by a large majority in this county, which has heretofore been carried by the other party only by the great exertions they put forth, combined With our apathy and inactivity. Very respectfully, BYRON B. BOWER. The Democrat does not claim to have " doc blr ” the circulation of any other journal published in Decatur county, but its circulation is larger than that of any •ther journal. If anybody meauiog busi ness doubts our statement, we are willing to compare Nsts with any other publisher. *—Democrat, 12tfl». As the proprietors of fete Siftr hafe been claiming the largest circulation, We will say to our worthy contem porary, that we mean busiite'ssoiot thtet tnwr We are surprised however, that he thinks us so blind as to con-' sent to compare lists just now. W T e will, however; ms&tethw proposition,- if the Democrat is anrioOte- about it. We will put up' a forfeit ho# 1 , and bet him forty" 4 subscribers that after ike October election our lists will largely exceed* if not double his in Decatur county subscribers, that is bona fide ones that be' and- we too can swear to, and that atee' cm the lists for as long as one month.- Ob, if he will allow us to count thfe' list of five Hundred names which we hate rettertetfc orders, from three men, for sentfibg' eur paper until after the election next monthj we are ready to compare now. Ah, Bteili that sort of stuff will’ do' fib 1 preach to the marines*, bn* we oh* Jbnd 5 forces have been'to miU.- lii :<Bply to *a request made of Hon: B'. H. Hill ttewddiem the people of Decatur, he writes: Atlanta, G\., Seft. 9th. 1872! H. G. Cbawford, Esq, — Dear Sir: Yours of the sth instant is at hand. I ■ball endeavor to deliver the address you leqaest sometime during the campaign, bat cannot possibly do so before October Ist- Very truly yours. Rrwj. H. Hill. THE [SENATORIAL QUES TION. We stated last week that we would have something further to say in re gard to the Senatorial question, and now we shall fulfill our promise. It is generally and truthfully un derstood in this city that We (R. M. J.) have been all the time ft Bruton man. We think that Major Bruton has made a good Senator, indeed we do not think we would be fat Wrong should we that he has proved him self the most active &nd energet ic Senator' that ever represented this District; Raving always an eye to the interest of his constituents, he conducted himself in such a manner ftS to merit the disapproval of no man. ’Tis true we were and have been in favor of seeing Maj. Brtttoii returned to the Senate. ’Tis also true that we worked hard and un ceasingly to secure to him the nomi nation of the Democratic party.- But, that party—the patty to whom we claim everlasting and firm allegiance —in its assembled wisdom, decided that Col. B. H. Gee was its choice, and right there ended our support of Maj. Bruton. However much we did prefer Bru ton, the Convention did not see fit to name him the standard bearer of the party, ftnd we cannot afford to place our judgment in the balance against that of thirty men, who, we doubt hot, Were selected with an eye to theif good sense, Wisdom and judg ment. Then we have this to say : Ist. We are a Democrat. 2d. The SuN is a Democratic jour nal/ 3d. We went iiito the nomination. 4th. We shall abide the decision of that Convention, though it had decided that old Nick should be the Candidate. This then Settles the question as to whether or not the Sun would “ bolt ” the nomination in favor of Bruton, aS many predicted it would. It would have been settled last week but for unavoidable and good rea sons. Then a word about Col. Gee and We are done. He is a man well wor thy and eminently capable of the position to which his friends are Working to elect him. Col. Gee is a good man, ft true and honest upright gentleman, and We think that the United Democracy Should, in solid phalanx, move forward and trium phantly place him in the Senatorial chair fieM October. We can do so. Let it be done.- We will say in Conclusion that otfr remarks have not been intended as ft thrust at any one, but simply as giving forth to the public the' senti ments that flow from deep down in our heart, ftnd being such, we throw ofir' hat three times in the air for Col. Bolivar H. Gee, and call on the Democracy of DecfttUr, Mitchell and Miller to roll up for him ft handsome majority in October next. 'the Bainbridge Sun, one of our best ex changes, h«i!8 fatfled to reach Us for the past few weeks What fhe' matter, Rienzi ? Are you in Otfr sad condition, “ fove-sick,” or have you acted like a.bad boy, and been tackling with a chill ? Do let Us hear from you before We visit Bainbridge this win —TalbOttoU Standard. Dear Sir:—As a committee ap pointed for the purpose by the Demo cratic Convention for the 2nd Con gressional District held in Albany, Ga. on 4th inst, we beg to inform you that by the action of that Con vention you were unanimously, and by acclamation selected as the nomi nee of the party to represent the 2nd District in the next (43d) United States Congress. We are glad to note’ the' prosperity of thaft rapidly grow ing journal. The Atlanta Sun and Constitution are discussing the difference between' Greeley and Grant. The former for Grant and ruin, the latter for - Gree ley and prosperity. Horace Greeley was assaulted, kissed ari*d hugged by a young wo man up in Rhode Island. Wonder if she would treat a small candidate’ that way, if so, we extend to her a hearty invitation to visit Bainbridge. There was a council of the crowns in Berlin on the 7th inst., Czar Alex ander, of Russia, Emperor Francis Joseph,-of Austria, being present to receive with Emperor William, of Germany the grand ovations of Prus shl- The rice crqp’in the lower Geor gia counties is reported in fine con dition by the Savannah Advertiser. The Baltimorean, published week ly at Baltimore, Md., is one of the very best papers that comes to our office Mr. Jas. C. Martin. Os Randolph county, will make this year two hundred gallons of excellent grape wine.—Savannah News. It has been our pleasure to visit the vineyards of this gentleman, once an esteemed citizen of our town. The vineyards, then, in their infahey, covered [twelve acres. Mr. Martin, who had given the subject thorough investigation, froth all ’available sources in North Carolina, afld from Longworth of Ohio, then estimated the scuppernong grape as Worth $3,000 per acre on matured vine yards. He was readily selling every gallon he could make at from $4 tu $5 per gallan and he expressed the opinion that the’ supply would not, in years, eqdal the demafid.- We add, that in OUr opinion atid in that of others more expert, Mr. M. furnishes a wine far suipassing anything we have ever known man ufactured here, as it does anythiiig which can be from the cellars of our merchants. For me dicinal purposes, it is Worth more than it sells for. In various sections of our county, the scuppernong grows as if indige nous. Although we know of one or two who utilize its berries, yet with how much indifference, is this really valuable vine regarded. Even grant ing that it requires the same amount of labor as a crop of cotton, yet one crop—and it never fails we believe — is worth 30 to 40 crops of cotton and yet it requires scarcely any cul ture. Will our people ever see the ne cessity or policy of diversifying tbeir crops or tlieir pursuits. We find in the Savannah News the following report of a very curious Democratic meeting held at Black- Shear, Pierce coUnty. Col. Nicliols could not, under any circumstances, be prevailed on to' rifn for Congress, ho' not he : Cditor Morning Mews: The con vention to nominate a Representa tive for this county met to'-day, and Mr. B. H. Patterson, a resident of Appling county, called Hon. J. C. Nichols to the chair, and the" people assembled asked Mr. Remshart to act as Secretary. Mr. Nichols, upon taking the stand, made a speech in which he reviewed his course in the Legislature, and spoke of the losses he had sustained by serving in the Behate. He is not a candidate for Congress ; cannot afford it; blit if the people should insist upon his going to Washington he Would go, though it would be a great sacrifice for him to be absefit from his home for two years. After the business of the meeting Was- over, it was moved and seconded to adjourn, which mo tion the-cliair refused to put, saying fee was" not willing to break up the meeting in any such way. A reso lution was then hfthded to tlie Sec retary, Who-' handed it to Mr. Wm. Davis, who read it, endorsing th£ chairman for Congress. The reso lution was passed, but more than* half the people had left the house before it was offered. VOX PoPULL Anonnneements. For; Tax Collector*- We are authorized to announce the name of Mr. M. F.
