TAT WEEKLY SUN
An Arkansas Letter.
St Lcui3 Democrat.]
Dover, October 3, ISI’2.
My Dear Bov —The double-barrel that
you sent came safe'y to hand, and I was
only shot at once while carrying it home.
Bill Slivers popped at me from behind the
fence, as I was passing his house, but I
had loaded the iwo-shooter as soon as I
got it, and he didn’t jump up from behind
that fence but once.
lam glad that one of the barrels is a
rifle, as 1 needed it for long range practice.
The other I can fill with buckshot, and
can riddle a man nicely at dose quarters.
I mean to try both barrels on those Jetts
when I meet them. You see, old man Jett
stole a mule from us in the war, and when
it was over pap laid for him and killed
him. Then nigger Tom Jett, as we call
him—the black-faced one —he laid for pap
and plugged him. Then I picked a fuss
with Tom, and cut him into giblets, and
since that time hii brother Sam has been
laying for me. I know it is his turn, but
I think my double-barrel will prove too
much for him.
If you want to see fun come down for a
while and biing a rifle. It don't make
any difference which side you belong to,
and it isn't even neces-„ry to join the mi
litia. It is "easy to get up a grudge against
somebody, and all you have to do is to lay
for your man and knock him over. Be
hind my pig pen is one of the sweetest
hi li lg places 1 know or, and it is so handy!
A good unity peop’e come within range in
the course of a week, and a mau can pass
his time right pleasantly.
I wish you would send me a catalogue of
Sutioay-school books, with the prices, if
there are any in St. Louis. If we can get
them on time we wili take a big lot of
books. lam superintendent of the Bap
tist Sunday-school now, and am l-unningit
under a lull head of steam. Old mau By
ers, who was turned out, is right road
about it. and swears that he will chaw me
up ; but he will chaw lead if he don’t keep
clear of me.
My wife wants to know if you can’t
send her a set of teeth without her get
ting measured Jor them. Her twenty
five dollar set was busted all to flinders by
a pistol shot that went through her mouth;
but it didu’t hurt her tongue. Write soon
to
Your friend and pard,
I*. S.—That sneaking, orney cuss. Sam
Jett, up last night and fired at me
thro ugh the window, but he didn’t hap
pen to kill anybody except a nigger girl. I
mean to go for him, though,--to-day, and
will be glad of a chance to try the doubie
barrell
How She Did It.
I will tell you a rather bare-faced story
of how a Dublin chambermaid is said to
have got twelve commercial travelers iuto
eleven bed rooms ; and yet to have given
each a separate room. Here we have the
eleven bed rooms :
_1 | 2 |~3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |_B | 9 | 10 | 11_
“ Now.’ said she, “if two of you gentle
men will go into No. 1 bed room and wait
there a few minutes, I’ll find a spare room
for one of you as soon as I've shown the
oihei-s to their rooms.” Well) now, hav
ing thus bestowed two gentlemen in No.
1, sue puis the third iu No. 2, the fourth
in No. 3, the fifth in No. 4, the sixth in
No. 5, the seventh iu No. 6, the eighth in
No. 7, the ninth in No. 8, the tenth in
No. 9, and the eleventh in No. 10. bhe
then came back to No. 1, whore you wifi.
remeiiNfer, she left the twelfth gentleman
along with the first, and said, “ I have ac
commodated all ;tbe rest, and still have a
to spare, so if one of you will please
step into No. 11, you will find it empty.
7'hus the twelfth matt got his bed room.
Os course there is a hole in the sauce-pan
somewhere ; but I leave the reader to de
termine exactly where the fallacy is, wich
a just warning to think twice before deci
ding as to which, if any, of the travelers
was the “ odd man out.’*
The Philadelphia Police.— The Age
says: Our police are no longer protectors
of the rights of all men, conservators of
the peace in the city. They are corrupt,
course, vulgar partisans, who trample upon
the laws wLh impunity, and permit others
to do so, when aiding them in their efforts
to retain plade, power and plunder. No
wonder crime is increasing iu our city
ivith such alarming rapidity when the po
lice are among the worse criminals outside
of the penitentiary, Wheu they hire a
man to act as a repeal er, that man will
take the liberty to crack a b,.nk or pick a
pocket, aud they will shut their eyes to
the acts of their tools. This is one result
of the late election, which men of prop
erty should ponder in a Culm, serious man
ner.
Two Sides.
There are funny things in this
World, and nothing ever was funnier
than reports by rival paper of some
thing which one supports and the
other opposes.
There was a demonstation in
Nashville on Saturday night in hon
or of Cheatham. The Banner is for
Johnson and the American for
Cheatham. The accounts are comi
cally antagonistic.
Says the Banner: "The Cheatham
funeral.’ Says the American: “The
great Cheatam demonstration.
Quoth the Banner, “the most
pitiable political failure of the cam
paign. Quoth the American,
"twelve thousand people on i the
square, the city wild with enthusiasm.
Mourns the Banner, “lighted to
his political tomb by ltttle boys
irrespective of color-” Boasts the
American, “the old hero honored by
the people of Tennessee.”
CONFEDERATE monument.
WE once more earnestly solicit the at
tention of our people to the enter
prise for the erection of a Monument in
honor cf the Confederate Dead of Georgia
and others who were killed or died on
Georgia Roil. The time for the distiibu
tion is rapidly approaching. It will take
place in this city, on the 4th of December
next, Deo Yojan'e. There will positively
be no postponesent. All sates will stop
on .the 2 Oth of November. The fate of this
effort w ill be decided then. Our people
will exhibit their gratitude for the bloody
sacrifices of their brave defenders, o_ ex
hibit to the world their cold indifference.
They will exhibit their pride or its loss ;
their appreciation of those who fell in
their service, or a disregard pf the noblest
sacrifice which riftn can make for hisowu
land, bis people and their homes.
We yet believe ttic spirits ofcthe dead
still haunt the land they loved and for
which they died. We vet believe that
those who live in these haunts of love will
substantially prove their devotion to the
dead “Foldieityin Gray.” Hundreds, yea
thousands Upon thousands, will wish to
become shareholders in the tribute to their
fame betweeu now and the 20th of Novem
her. We most respectfully request them
to reflect. Those thousands of names
thrown upon us at the last moment may
«o ovet whelm us as to make it impossible
to prepaie all of their certificates, record
their names, mail them and prepare the
numbers for the drawing on vhe 4th of
December- Hence much money may be
necessarily returned, to the detriment of
the cause and their disappointm nt in the
chances at the distribution of the prizes-
Let those, then, who have the means aDd
intend to contribute do ~o at once. If some
are not ready and must wait, Ist their
contributions come as soon as they are able
to make them to the Agents i.i their local
ity, or to this office. ...
Have no fear* of trickery., or fraud, or
speculation Whatever may have haps
pened in other schemes or sections, we
have an organized Association, consisting
of some of of our best citizens. An ex
pose will be made of all that Las been and
will be done in connection with this en
terprise All will be fait and honorable.
If all the tickets shall be sold, the
amount to be distributed will be in curren
cy, one hundred and thirty-one thousand
dollars ; in real estate, ninety-nine thou
sand dollars; in cotton, twenty thousand
dollars, m king a grand total of two liun
died and fifty thousand dollars.
If all the tickets are notsoldthe amount
received (after deducting the portion al
lotted to the Monument, the commissiohs
of the Agents, snd the sum required to de
fray the necessary expenses,) will be dis
tributed among the shareholders. The
piece lienee in this latter case will be given
—lst, to the 1,744 prizes in currency; 2d,
to the real estate ; 3d, to the cotton.
We ai'e pleased to stale that expenses
have been much diminished by the liber
ality of a poriion of the newspapers, and
the boundless assistance rendered us free
of charge by the Southern Express Compa
ny of this city.
Should any who have made, or mav
make voluntary donations to any amount,
desire to exchange their special tickets for
others which furnish chances in the draw
ing, we or our Agent, in this or other
States, will cheerfully comply with their
wishes.
We propose to'furnisb two whole tickets
to the proprietor of any weekly paper, and
three to the proprietor of any daily paper,
in this State, or out of it, who will publish
this notice until the 20th of November,
jn doing this we ai\» aware they will be
influenced by liberality of sentiment, rather
than remuneration, for their work.
Ail ordhis promptly attended to.
Whole tickets, $5; Fractional, $(, $2,
$3 and $4. L. & A. H. McLaWS.
