Long division —Seperation for
life.
Too late for the fair—An old
bachelor.
Mocking birds—lean chickens for
dinner.
Mon of shining qualities—Day
and Martain.
Better known than the postman’s
knock to some people— the inn-keep
er’s tap.
The rock ahead— What a young
husband foreSeesJwben the cradle is
brought home.
A winged calf is on exhibition at
the Oregon State Fair. The man
who owns it is looking for a rise in
weal.
Why are the days in summer lon
ger than the days in winter ? Because
they are hotter in summer, and heat
expands.
When people are sworn in a court
of justice they kiss the outside of the
book; doubtless becausethey consider
an oath a “binding” matter!
A one-armed man in Salem, lately
applied for a divorce on the grounds
that the hand he had given his wife
ih marriage, was lost, and that the
contract was therefore void.
“Are you not afraid that whiskey
11 get into your head?” asked a
stranger of a man he saw r drinking
at a bar. “No,” said the toper, “this
liquor’s too week to climb. ’’
“Home is the place for boys,” said
Spinks to his eldest pride and joy.
“Yes,” said the youngster, dutifully,
“ I like to stay at home all the time,
but ma sends me to school.”
A husband, whose wife has applied
for a divorce writes a protest to the
judge, in which he says : “ This
plagued thing called divorce liasj in
my opinion, parted many a man and
wife.”
“ Here, young rascal, walk up and
give an account of yourself. Where
have you been ? “After the girls,
father.” “Did you ever know me to
do so when I was a boy T 1 “No sir,
but mother did.
A preposterous story is circulating
to tbe effect that sportsmen in New
Jersoy mistake mosquitoes for snipe.
The much greater length of the Jer
sey mosquitoe’s bill should render
such an error impossible.
“What a nuisance!” exclaimed a
gentleman at a concert, as a young
top in front of him kept talking in a
loud voice to a lady at his side. “Did
you refer to me, sir ?” threateningly
demanded the fop. “Oh, no ; I meant
the musicians there, who keep up
such a noise with their instruments
that I can’t hear your conversation,”
was tho stinging reply.
Cubiosity. —Curiosity is a kernel
of the forbidden fruit, which still
sticketh in the throat of a natural
man, sometimes to the danger of his
choking.
Cheerfulness. God loveth a cheer
ful giver, and Christ reproved the
Pharisees for disfiguring_their faces
with a sad countenance. “Fools!
who to pursuade men that angels
lodged in their hearts, hung out a
devil for a sign in their faces.
Wliat to do when you are in
Trouble.
Don’t try to quench your sorrow
in rum or narcotics. If you begin
this you must keep right on with it
till it leads you to ruin ; oi*, if you
pause, you must add physical pain
and the consciousness of degrada
tion to the sorrow you seek to es
cape. Os all wretched men, his con
dition is most pitiful, who, having
sought to drown his grief in drink,
awakes from his debauch with shat
tered nerves, aching head, and de
pressed mind, to face the same trou
ble again. Then too often the fatal
drink will be again and again sought,
till its victim sinks’ a hopeless, piti
ful and total wreck.
Work is your true remedy. If
misfortune hits you hard, kit you
something else kard; pitck into
sometking with a will. Tkere’s notk
ing like good, solid, absorbing, ex
hausting work to cure trouble. If
ysu have met with losses, you don't
want to lie awake thinking of them.
You want sweet, calm, sound sleep,
to eat your dinner witk appetite.—
But you can’t unless you work. If
you say you don’t feel like work, and
go a louting all day to tell Tom, Dick
or Harry the story of your woes,
you’ll he awake and keep your wife
awake by tossings. This spoils her
temper and you own breakfast the
next morning,- and you begin to
morrow feeling ten times worse than
you did to-day.
There are some troubles-that time
only heals, and perhaps some can
never be healed at all ; but nearly all
can be healed by the panacea, work.
Try ity if tkue aiUicted.
CONFEDERATE MONUMENT.
Y\TE once mt>re earnestly solicit the at-
VV tcntioii of our people to the enter
prise for the ejection of a Moi timent in
honor of the Confederate Dead of Georgia
and others Who were killed or died on
Georgia soil. The time for the distribu

place in this city, on the 4th of December
next, Deo Voldn e. There will positively
be no postponement. All sales will stop
on .the 20th of November. The fate of this
effoit will be decided then. Oar people
will exhibit their gratitude for the bloody
sacrifices of their brave defenders, o ex
hibit to the world their cold indifference.
They will exhibit their piidejor its loss ;
their appreciation of those who fell in
their service, or a disregard of the noblest
sacrifice which man can make for bis own
land, his people and their homes.
We yet believe the spir ts of the dead
still haunt the land they loved and for
which they died. We vet be ieve that
those who live in these haunts of love will
substantial!'- prove their devotion to the
dead “holdiers in Gray” Hundreds, yea
thousands upon thousands, will wish to
become shareholders in the tribute to their
fame between now and the 20th of Novem
ber. We most respectfully request them
to reflect. Tho u e thousands of names
thrown upon us at the las-t moment may
-0 ove> whelm us as to make it impossible
to prepare all of their certificates, record
their names, mail them and prepare the
numbers for the drawing on rhe 4th of
December- Hence much money may be
necessarily returned, to the'detriment of
the cause and their disappyintm nt in the
cham-es at the distribution of the prizes,
lot those, then, who have the means and
intend to contribute do ~o at once. If some
are not read* and must wait. 1»t their
contributions come as soon as they are able
to make them to the Agents in their local-*-
ity, or to this office.
Have no fear* of trickery, or fraud, or
speculation Whatever may have haps
pened in other schemes or sections, we
have art organized Association, consi-iing
nf some of of our best cirizt-ns. An ex
pose will lie made of all that lias bee and
will be done in connection with this en

It all the tickets shall he sold, the
amount to be distiibuted will bein curren
cy, one hundred and th'rty-o e thousand
dollars; in real estate, ninety nine thou
sand dollars; in cotton, twenty thousand
dollars, m king a grand total of two liun
died arid fifty thousand dollars.
If all the tickets a>e notsold the amount
received (after deducting the portion ai

the boundless assistance rendered us free

Should any who have made, or may

tbe radical cure of certaiu weakennesses,
the effects of Errors and Abuses of early

The celebrated author, in this admirable
essay, clearly demonstrates from a thirty
years su< cesfnl practice, the alarming.con
sequences of such errors and abuses may
be radically cured without the dangerous
use of internal medicine or the application
of the knife ; pointing out the mode of
cure at once simple, certain and effectual,
by means of which every sufferer, no mat

himself cheaply, privately, and radically.
