Swearing.
Os all bad habit, it would be diffi
cult to mention one that has less j
reason or provocation in it than that
of using profane or vulgar language.
When coolly viewed, the act of one
human being calling violently on his
maker to deliver over his fellow-man
to condemnation, is wicked in the
extreme; it is a vain and irreverent
use of Lift Maker's name; and it is
the expression of a hateful and ex
ceeding wicked wish. But leaving
the wickedness of the habit out of
account, it is useless and irrational —
it brings no pleasure, nor comfort,
nor relief. No swearer is ever the
wiser, richer or happier for his cur
ses.
He cannot inflict the evil he
invokes. He may curse his enemy
for a life time without turning one
hair of his head, white or black, by
the process.
Ihe language furnishes all the
words and terms needed to give
strength and vigor to expression,
Without resorting to oaths and
curses. All the words needed to ex
press indignation and wrath, even
are expressed in it.
An oath does not give strength
and emphasis to the truthful man’s
yea ; and all the oaths and maledic
tions that can can be imagined can
not give an atom of strength and
emphasis to the liar’s nay. Swear
ing is cheiefly a lmb;t; tho oath
which a well-bred man utters in a
moment of passion or vexation may
be overlooked, for it is, perhaps, an
accident ; but for the foul volleys of
oaths and curses that the habitual
swearer pours out in ordinary con
versation, or on slight provocation,
there is no shawdow of excuse. —

Sec one oi tli*.i simple conv r.-i; .ons
taken down in short hand and put
in print, with coarse oaths following
every fourth or fifth word, all along
the line of their remarks.
Profanity and vulgarity do not
al\vays*go together, but they are apt
to. Tho swearer is in danger of be
coming vulgar, and the vulgar man
is almost invariable a swearer.
When both habits meet in the
same individual they make him in
tensely offensive to all pure-minded
people. It is imagined by some
persons that an occasional oath or a
little vulgarity gives spice and flavor
to conversation; but if it does, it is a
very offensive flavor.
There is nothing more charming
than chaste and simple language,
and it is worth any young gentle
man’s while to cultivate the habit
of using it.
An oath would not be considered
an attraction to the canversation of
a modest and beautiful maiden; nei
ther can it be justly held to„ add
spirit or piquancy to the conversa
tion of a man. Is a woman who
swears, the loved and respected of the
more modest and retired lady? No!
a thousand times no. iVeither ought
the man who is a swearer be loved
and respected. Young man, if you
are one of that class, come out from
among them and be yourself again—
use no more heartless oaths; cause
your gentle and loving parents nn
moie pain of heait -and sleep 1 ess
nights; but prove to them and the
world, that you can and will be a
man. Marion.
So many handsome fortunes were
made in getting rid of the curse of
slavery in this country, that it is not
strange “the curse of slavery in Cuba’
is to be made a pretext for making
some more. Somebody wants a job
to build war vessels, and so Mr.
Negley, of Pennsylvania says “the
curse of slavery in Cuba” is liable to
involve us in war at any moment. -
O Liberty! what lots of money has
been made in thy name!— 27. Y. Sun.
Our Northern brethren are cute.
They first made fortunes in the slave
trade, and then made larger fort nes
by destroying slavery. But their
morality and philanthropy is only
equaled by their cupidity. They
brought the africans to this country
and made them slaves to emancipate
them from barbarism, and put
money in their own pockets; they
robbed the South and set the
negroes free to emancipate them
from slavery. If by so doing tkev
made “handsome for times” for
themselves and hundreds of thous
ands of good Ra lieal voters, the
fact does not detract from, their
philanthropy, which, in its practical
operation, enhances all the world
outside of their own homes. Sai\
