Worth and South lUlhoacb
We have had the pleasure during
tne past week of meeting in our town,
Captain VV. C. Cherrv, an old friend
of the writers, who is at present en
gaged as con tractor, upon the Rome
end of the North and South Railroad.
Captain C. being unavoidably detain
ed hero for two cr three days, we had
the pleasure of several conversations
with him in reference to the above en
terprise. He speaks encouragingly ot
the progress of the work on his end
of the line, and thinks by the end of
the year, he will have twenty miles
completed and ready for the iron.
He.has at present about seven miles
graded, notwithstanding the bad
weather of the past winter, and hav
ing .recenily. added considerably to his
force, h now making much better
progress to an anytime heretofore.
3? rom the Columbus papers, and La
Grange Reporter, we are glad to hear
that the work is being pushed forward
• satisfactorily on that end . It-is thought
the grading will be finished to La
Grange, some forty odd miles from
Columbus by Fall. Ai rangeinents
have been made to procure the iron
-for the entire route, and we. presume
it. will bo laid down as fast as the road
is graded. ,
me rapid Construction of the North
& South Railroad since its commence
ment does great credit to its managers,
and should be a subject of congratula
tiop, t o its -stockholders, arrd people
along tho line, who are interested in
this important enterprise. We hope
that portion of our county, which will
be interested by this Road, will give
every aid in their power when called
upon, and that there may be no draw
backs to pushing the work, as rapidly
through the intermediate section as at
the Lome and Columbus ends.

Trial M- D. YVoox>.—From the
Atlanta papers we learn that the De-
Kalb Superior Court has been engaged
during the past week in the trial of
M. D. Wood, charged with the seduc
tion of Miss Emma Chi\ers Our
readers will itcolkct that W* cd had
his trial last Fall and was found guilty.
This new trial has been granted in
consideration of new evidence, which
it established, will probably alter the
verdict and sentence of the court.’
The object of the new testimony
is to prove that Miss Emma drivers
was not a virtuous girl at the time
of . the alleged reduction, and const*
queutly not a subject of seduction,
while the counsel of Wood do not
admit any misdemeanors whatever they
take the position that it is impossible
to seduce any other than a virtuous
woman, and that Emma drivers was
not such a woman. His trial had not
closed, up to the time of our latest in
formation, but his friends and counsel
were confident it is stated of his acquit
tal.

A newspaper is frequently con

telligence of the community in which
it b published. The American Jour
nalist on this subject gently remars:
When we find that one newspaper
writer has published his neighbor as a
“ sneak,” a “ skunk,” a “toad,” we
know that Journal is yet in its ado
lescent period. We know that writer,
though he may thrust with a rusty
bodkin, cannot weal a flashing scime
tar of Damascus steel. We know the
society that applauds such utterances
is raw and primitive. We smell the
prairie-flowers, or rather we see pris

coatless men sitting on barrels in
