\\ Anted.—One of the great wants
of Carrollton at this time, is dwelling
houses. We believe that if we bad
titty to rent, we could do so, within
the next month. Many people, who
have been here prospecting our place
would come here to live, if they could
get houses to live in, on reasonable
terms. It is true, that there are a few
to rent, but at least a dozen applicants
for every one ot them, and hence the
owners are putting such figures on
them, as tend to drive off those who
may wish to come here. Let those
who have the lots and the means, put
up neat dwelling houses upon them, if
they r wish to build up the town, and
enhance the value of their remaining
©
property. We are certain that it
would be a safe and paying invest
ment.
We bear the complaint fre
quently made that property is too
high in Carrollton. Whether this is
really true or not, it is a difficult mat
ter to determine, as it depends upon
the future importance of the town, a
correct estimate of which it is now a
difficult matter to form. We would
suggest, however, that we believe that
land owners within the corporate lim
its, could make it to their interest
to hold out inducements to buyers
at this time. It is unreasonable in
them to expect to sell lots in a village
ot four or five hundred inhabitants,
for as much, as in a city of as many
thousand. Let them first get the peo
pie here, by bolding out inducement’s
and then they can get easily their big
prices for lots. This is the true poli
cy, and one which will pay best in
the long run. Let them not kill the
goose that laid the golden egg, by re
pelling new comers, with their high
pi k es.
Gone to Texas.— Our young friend
Prof. F. T. Stephenson, who has been
engaged in teaching in the Masonic
Institute at this place, during the past
year, left on last Tuesday, for Dallas
Texas. We hate to give up such
young men as Prof. S., but since be is
determined to cast his lot in the “Lone
Star State" he lias our best wishes for
his success. To the people among
whom he proposes to cast his future
we commend him, as a young
man of fine talent, energy, industry
and sobi icty r .
