ihe teachers and officers of the

ah who may have claims against the
public school fund,.are requested to
meet in Carrollton on the first Mon
day in February, with their claims
properly audited, in order to draw,

L. J. Smith,
County Treasurer.
Mr. E W. Wells has bought
the lot just beyond his livery stable,
and on the opposite side of the street,
wimie he proposes putting up a fine
dwelling at an early day. This lot is
one of the prettiest in Carrollton, and
a pretty residence will show off to
much advantage there.
Geo. Merrill, Wirt Thomason
and othe.s, left tor Haralson County
on last Tuesday, for a deer hunt.
They expect to have not only some
fine sport but “to bring in the meat.”
Y e hope they will not be disappointed,
as we are, rather fond of venison.
Attention L aumers.— The atten
tion of farmers is called to the adver
tisement. of Logan’s Concentrated
Phosphate. It is claimed to be equal
to the high priced fertilizers, and
much cheaper. Mr. J. M. Forbe* is
agent. Read what he has to say in

QuERY-What has become of the Law

which, for a season, hud a livelv run
here last year. Can’t some of these
societies be resurrected Let us have
at least, a well organized debating so
cietv, and let it be well attended. It
would be the means o” much mental
improvement, and wo hope some ol
our young men, will organize one at
an early day.
Reese’s llicii School.— Prof.
Reese's school opened the first of this
week, with forty nine scholars. This
j is a fine opening and gives promise of
j a very large school. Professor R. is
now teaching in his new building,
which he has constructed at great per
sonal expense. This building, which
is now completely fi fished, and quite
an ornament to our place, has been
constructed especially for a. school
room, for which it is admirably adapt
ted.

Moving In.— the population of our
town is receiving- accessions, every,

the pleasure of welcoming to Lar

e im.ty, Alabama, an old friend «.t the
writers ; ; Iso, Air W. H. Jones, of
Albany Ga., of whom mention was

town is growing, it will soon be a stir

Godey’s Lady’s B iok.— This most
excellent and oldest of American mag
azines is on our table, and like its pre
decessors is a bijou of excellence, and
is only an improvement upon theearli
er volumes in so far as the present is
an improvement upon forty odd years
ago. God'ey keeps up with the age,
if not a little alien'd in the magazine
line. The work accomplished by this
magazine is one ot which its founder
and present publisher may weli feel
proud. It is one of the most welcome
visitors to the household, and its
monthly coming is looked forward to
with anxiety,and its receipt welcomed
with unbounded pleasure by the entire
feminine population, and even staid
old males like us welcome it with
scarce less joyful greeting— Times,

A Fable with a Moral.
Translated from the Anglais.
Chanticleer, “in plumage gay,” loud
voiced and vain, stood proudly on the
rick in the barn yard; and as faithful
Collie was going out in charge of the
sheep he thus insolently addressed him:
pCock-;»-doo-oo-dle-doOI
Look here, youifellow, ?/oIT 1”
Collie stopped in surprise and looked
up, and Chanticleer, seeing that he had
his attention, contained:
“I want you to go and tell your
master, that old farmer, and his men
that they don’t know any thing about
their business. Instead of fixing up
this rick with the corn outside and the
stubble in the middle, they have put
the corn in the middle and the stubble
outside! Now, how do the ninnies ex
peet me and my hens to get at the
grant? They must have forgotten the
importance of eggs !
Cock-a-doo-d’.e-dos
That s the way I do!’’
And off lie strutted, his hens all
cackling their approbation and admi
ration. *
Honest Collie bow-wowed in indig
nation and amusement ; and then call
big to th e fanfaron, he said:
4 You gentlemen of so much capacity
of mouth and incapacity of brain im
agine the world to be made sot you ,
and that every tiling must be at ranged
to suit your views and convenience.
But learn that you were made for the
barn yard and not the barn yard
for you. Get that into vour
sconce, and you will discover your true !
place in the community and no longer
make yourselves rediculous by your
silly pretension.-'’
moral
Many a human cock “struts the stage,”
filled with the inflation inspired by his
own loudness of voice and self-as-er
tion, but who is, sooner or later, found
to consist of only a few feathers, a
brazen throat and an OTti.pty skull.
Alas! for the vanity of human pre
tensions! And yet how many rnascu
iiue (as well as feminine ) hens of the
genus homo are imposed upon bv
just such a chanticleer!
Ignorance and fully are loud-mouthed and vain;
Whilst Knowledge and Wisdom are modest in train.
