THE YOUNG WOMAN AND THE
TELEGRAM.
The other day a young house
wife left her home in this city to
spend a few days with several lady
friends in Hamilton. Before going
she provided a good supply of cold
edibles for her liustand, and told
him that he could help himself
whenever he was hungry. He took
lunch down town and went home
in the evening for dinner.
As he tells the story, he found
cold chicken, cold butter, cold pic,
cold milk, cold salt, cold mustard,
and several other cold dishes, but
with all that he was not entirely
satisfied, and hunted high and low
for something else. At first he
did not know what it was, but fin
ally concluded that he wanted
bread. He knew there was some
in rhe house but he could not find
it. Finally he concluded to tele
graph his wife, for he could not
live without bread. Accordingly
a telegram asking “Where is the
bread?’’ was dispatched.
The wife received it in the midst
of a number of ladies, and it light
ened her nearly to death. With
the cry, “I know it is bad jucw-: I
know Mr. B is killed!” she fell
in a faint. The ladies present cried
from sympathy, and a most lugu
brious scene presented itself when
the man of the house happened in.
“Whatsthe matter here?” he asked,
“Mrs. B’s husband has been kiPed
and she has fainted,” was the re
ply. “How do you know?” he
asked. “Oh, she got a telegram.”
“Where is it?” “We haven’t open
ed it yet.”
Imagine the scene when the sym
pathetic creatures read the message.
In about an hour the reply was
sent back to him; ’’You mean thing.
It’s in the bread box, under the
piano, where I had it from the
cook.”—Cincinnati Times.
Rook Out For The Rogues.
The Savannah News gives a
I very timely caution to ex-confede
rate soldiers. This caution comes
from the information furnished bv
a Washington special which states
that “a firm of sharpers in that
city is sending circulars south di
j reeled to persons who were con>
scripted into the confederate .mili
tary service, offering for a considc
ation to secure legislation from con
1 gress remunerating them for the
time lost in ths war, and for wounds
and other injuries received, The
scheme seems to be very ingenous
ly planned, and it is proposed to
raise a fund to prosecute the
■ claims. The parties who are at
I the bead of the game want the
claimants to contract to give them
a percentage of any money that
may be procured. This looks by
itself reasonable enough,, J?ut the
sharpers want each claimant
send them £5 in cash, to cover ex
penses necessary to be incurred in
i obtaining the de.Jred legis'atjon.
A DET PROVERB.
Mrs. Samuelson is the mother’
i in-iaw of Gilhooly. The last time
they met,she said.reproachfully:—
“3 ou haven’t been to £ce me in
a long time.”
“I have been intending to pay
you a visit for some time, but you
know the proverb: ‘the road to
perdition is paved with good inten
tions, 'replied the wi etch.
Ridge Flowing.
We are too apt to neglect to se
: cure the advantages we might have
irom tne beneficent freezing which
our northern soil receives every
winter. The autumn rain,? level off
the survace of the ground and com
pact it so that the frosts have com
paratively little action. When the
surface is frequenely frozen and
thawed, the amount of stony mat
ter rendered fine and soluble is
something surprising. Any one
may easily test this in good winter
weather, by taking a basinful of
small stones, selected from the soil,
washing them clean in pure rain
water, and exposing it with a small
quanily of water, to freezing and
thawing on a window sill. There
should be enough water to a little
more than simply moisten the pel>
bles, and on the outside of a win
dow with a southern exposure, the
water will freeze hard at night and
thaw when the sun shines. When
the water tinilly evaporates, the
basin and the lowermost pebbles
will be found whitened with an ins
crustation of substances dissolved
out of the stones, mixed with more
or less grit which has crumbled off
from the surface of the £ tones
If the laud is thrown into ridges
by the plow, in autumn, the same
effects of freezing and thawing go
on for a good part of the winter on
Fnd not deeply covered with snow.
When the snow falls, it will
perhaps the whole ground;
but after a few day«, the tops of
the ridges .will appear, and then
the :i\ z : ”garid thawing will go
on. 'F.c ■ i.n’S on flatland should

ground, v. ? ere there wcuid be dan -
ger of washing, they should be up
and down the slope—Mason C.
