Metropolitan*’>w's Polto#* j
Declared “A Public Xu : «aor*”—ll >t» they j
Rule the Jungles ami Muzzle the I’rcss.
Sunday we hea.nl a startling story
about the villein ip* of the ChaUatrooga |
Metropolitan* having been exposed in !
a formal manner by the grand jury of
Hamilton entirety. Hut the silence of
the Chattanooga Union —a fearless and
enterprising paper—-led ua to believe J
that the story Imu no foundation. It
appears, however, that the silence of]
our cou rjtporary was forced. The ;
grand jury did present tbe iVletropoli- I
t ins as public nuia nice” last Friday.
Th .t evening Police Commissioner
► I’car-on calied on one of the pmprie"
tors of the ( ilon, and throated to “cut
Jiis heart out” if he published the doc
ument. Saturday, however, it was put
in type for Sunday’s issue ; but again
♦be myrmidon of IJrowulow suppressed
it forcibly. And the issue'of yesterday
also comes to hand without it. In lieu
we have the follow ing :—uah ville (ju
ztlle.
TUP. I’ol,l CP QUESTION*.
At the request of Mr. Peerson, and
after consulting a. number ol influential
persons, of both political parties, we
have concluded that ttie interests of
public do not demand the publication
ot the repmt of the Fraud Jury at
present. We are actuated in this mat
ter solely hy considerations ol the wel
fare of tiie city, which will be manifest
hereafter.
And Pearson makes the following
apology for his outrageous conduct on
Friday and Saturday :
Sum. C. Hum"ire —Sir : Under the
excitement produced hy general rumors
of charges made against myself and
the Metropolitan Police, I used hasty
and unjustifiable language to you,
which l very much regret. At the
time l did not understand that tl
charges of the Grand Jury were made
part of the public records, W iiilst l
maintain that these charges are un
founded and untrue, yet I am free to
admit your right as a journalist to pub
lish the proceedings just as any other
record.
1 have to ask that you suspend the
publication of the report of the Grand
Jury until l have lime to prepare the
proof to meet these charges, so that the
accusation and defense may go togelh"
er. I hope, in a personal interview, to
make you a satisfactory explanation of
my conduct in the premises. Re-
Bpeclfully, A. A. Pearson.
Commissioner of Metropolitan Police.
The report of the Grand Jury how
ever lias readied the light, and is
published as follows by a city colcm
porarv. It speaks for itself:
We tbe undersigned, the Grand Jury,
for the October term, 1807. of the Law
Court of Chattanooga, feel it our duty,
as good citizens, to protest against and
expose the flagrant corruptions which
have manifestly crept into the manage
ment ol the Metropolitan Police estab
lishment in the city ol Chattanooga
corruptions which have directly and
incidentally come to our knowledge.
It is patent that the Metropolitan
Police, from the head down, with two
or three honorable exceptions among
the subordinates, are tbe keepers ol
lewd women, and the frequenters of
Icwdlioiiscs —not as conservators of
the peace, or to bring offenders to jus
tice, bill in gratification of their lewd
desires and propesilios.
The women who yield themselves to
the lusts ol the Police, have been
shielded from arrest, and those who
have been fined, hove been promised
immunity and tbe enforcement of the
collection of the fines delayed, provided
that they yield their bodies to the lusts
ol their judge and captors.
A number ot these unfortunate wo*>
men who have been, beiore our body,
have since been seized by the police,
and extreme penalties imposed upon
thorn, not, as we believe, lor offenses
committed, but avowedly in retaliation
for si* being witnesses, and in that ca-
pacity making disclosures.
Tii.'so and other facts have led us to
the painful conclusion that the police
force in this city have become a public
nuisance, pernicious in its influence
upon the morals ot the city, and ma
king justice a matter of sale and lavor
itism.
We regard itadutv, due to ourselves
as well as the public, to present these
fuels, and respectfully ask thai this
paper he made a record of the court,

Convention-*’ isrrlt'ultural and
Manufacturing of the State
of Georgia.
Tlus association was adjourned from
Novembe last to hold its annual session
on tiie 13th of the presant month at
Milledge ville.
The time and place were selected in
view of meeting cotemporuneously with
the Legislature, to insure a full atten
dance. to enlist the members of the
Legislature in the objects of tin* asso
ciation, and to obtain, if practicable,
and so far as might be pVopper, the co
operation oftheState in promoting and
developing the material interests and
resources —Indeed every industrial in
terest of Georgia.
But as no Legislature will meet this
fall, and as it has been supposed that,
owing to the present political excite
ments of the day, but a meager atten
dance could be had, L entered upon a
correspondence with a number of mem
bers «i said association as to the pro
priety of postponetng us session to
such future day as the Legislature shall
meet. All from whom 1 have heard
concur in the propriety of postpone
ment, and authorised me so to adver
tise.
1 therefore give notice that the ses
sion of the “Agricultural and Manufac
turing Convention ot the Btate of
Georgia,” is adjourned to a future day,
due notice of which time will be given
through the newspapers.
