Church will hold service and preach in
Ihe Presbyterian Church on Sunday

Rlaii and Bradshaw
Have issued their Proch mation to the
titizens of Bartow and adjacent coun
ties, which will be found on the first
page of this paper. They are in down
right earnest, about selling goods, or
they would not propose to make such
sacrifices in ihe price of the same. See
their large advertisement.
Loewein«tein and Pfeifer
llave issued Order No. One, in our
columns, this week, which, of course,
everybody will read. It is everyone's
interest to do so, as they make some
very startling announcements in it. —
They are determined to carry out in
good faith what they propose in their
darning advertisement.
TSie Eclectic Magazine,
For January, 1868, is upon our table,
freighted with interesting foreign litera

York, by VV. H. Bidwell, at $5 00 a
year. See Prospectus.
Lamps, Burning' Oil, Samps.
VVe are glad to announce to our read

iously expected, Lamps, Burners and
Chimneys cf Messrs. Marsh & Thomas

above gentleman. They have now and
keep constantly on hand a bountiful
supply of Estrella Oil. Call and get
Lamps and Oil, that you may have
light, more abundantly.
Orbs. Murrell.
These gentlemen, it will be seen by
a card in another column, have hung
out their shingle in our midst. They
propose to do all kinds of woik in the
line of Dental Surgery, and Irom speci
mens of their work, which we have
seen, they fix it up in the best style of
the art. They arc both nice gentlemen
and we bespeak for them a liberal
patronage.
Rev. O. L. Smiili.
We were mistaken about the late resi
dence of this gentleman in our last paper
We staled that he was from Webster
county, when it should have been
Brooks county in tins State.
Gen. Meade lias issued orders en
forceing the late Stay Law passed by
the Convention.
Conventions are now in session
in Virginia, North and South Carolina,
Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Lou
isiana. This is a time ol travail on
the part of the Southern States, May
we not hope that something more than
a mouse will be brought forth.
We Invite attention to the new and
splended advertisement ol Col. R. 11.
Jonks from the Temple of Industry. —
He gives such an array ol refferences
as will no doubt prove of great use to
bim. It is well for a Mechanic to give
such attestation ol faithfulness and Com
petency’ His ellorts are to build up a
trade and a business in our midst as
will meet the demands and fully supply
the whole country.
Col. Jones, is the man for the times
and in his line none can excel! him in
the country. He is certainly worthy
jhe patronage and confidence of our
peo pie.
The Souillicrn Cultivator,
This old favorite has entered upon
the 26th year ofits existence. Weans

Scott’s Magazine, tor December
and January, has been laid on our table
hy the editor, and is full of unusually
good reading matter. We notice that
the price is now §4 per annum, which
•we think cheap enough. This maga

good.

Gen, Meade and the Removal of
State Officers. —A n officer connected
with the State, who came down from
Atlanta yesterday, informs us that he
had an interview with General Meade
on Wednesday. The General inform
ed him that he regretted the necessity
which compelled him to remove Gov.
Jenkins and Secretary Jones, but that
he was obliged to do so on the ground
that by their refusing to pay the Con
vention they became impediments to
reconstruction ; that the people of
Georgia need have no fears that the
pnb'ic funds would be mis-applied ;
that no other officers should he remov
ed unless they-obstructed reconstruction
in their official character ; that he con
ceded the right of these and all others
tc vote lor or against the new Consti
tution when it shall he submitted for
ratification ; that he had no idea of
interfering with the State Road ; and,
finally, that lie was not here to oppress
the people of Georgia, but in the capac
ity of a soldier to carry out instructions,'
and that whether the present plan of
taking the State back into the Union
was just or unjust, was no business of
his.
lie is described as a polite, affable,
agreeable old gentleman of filtv-five,
who seems to know nothing in this
whole matter but to act and to do
according to orders from higher author
ity.—Mucon Telegraph.

—The people ol Sandersville are
about to form a hook and ladder com

to purchase a fire engine.
A burglar tried to get into a police

He managed to get into the guard

—A Farmer in the northern part of
the State, who never made any money
in raising cotton, has cleared three

wheat and corn.
—A uegro woman at Columbus was
seen by another, a few days ago, to
throw her baby into the river. The
waves waslted it ashvre, and she caught
and was about to throw it in again,
when the other woman came up and
stopped her.
—The breaking of a bar of iron
threw' a train on the Macon and West

day. Nobody hurt.
—A little girl, named Susan Clinton,
was burned to death in Atlanta on
Saturday last, by her clothing taking
fire while sitting in front of a grate.
UST'Tlie New York Herald’s special
telegram from Atlanta, of the 19lh.
says that Gov. Jenkins had determined,
if bis removal is attempted, that he will
sue out a writ quo warranto in the
United States Court. This is the
course we expected him to take, and
one we hope he will take.
Butler and Grant. —Gen. Butler
spoke against the nomination of Grant
at the soldiers’ meeting in Washington,
on the Bth instant. The proposition
to hold a separate Convention was
carried by one vote.
Johnson and Hancock. —The New
York Herald has dropped Grant, and
taken up Andrew Johnson and Gen.
Hancock for President and Vice-
President.
A German Settlement Near Co
lumbia, S. C.—A colony of Germans,
numbering about one hundred, have
settled on the Middleton place, in Rich
land District, between Wateree River
and Colonel’s Creek. They have gone
to work with a vim—breaking up the
ground, erecting substantial dwellings,
besides various out-houses, etc. The
settlement or village, \ve learn, is to be
called Germantown.
The Difference. —Whilst a major
ity of planters in the Southern and
Western portions of this State have
become bankrupt in their attempt to
raise cotton, almost every farmer in
Northern Georgia has made mohev by
raising wheat and corn. One farmer,
in a county north ol this, who never
made any money, even before the war,
on the cotton sensation, cleared three
thousand dollars this year by raising
wheat . —Altantu Opinion.
Nashville Times states that
President Johnson has purchased a fine

From Millkdoevillk. —A dispatch
from Milletlgeville to the Macon Tele
graph. ol the 15th, says :
Gen Ruger took posssession of the
Governor’s office to-day, ana Captain
Rockwell took possession of an empty
Treasury. Gen. linger will make no
changes at present in State officials.—
The Comptroller expects to be remov
ed by higher authority. The State
Treasurer refuses to turn over the
records of his office to Captain Rock
well.
S©“We clip the following portion of
[an Atlanta dispatch from tire Baltimore
Sun of the Bth :
Gov. Jenkins called the attention of
Gen. Meade to several of Gen. Pope’s
orders, and their revocation is held
under advisement.
The Georgia Treasury.-— -As has
been staled, it seems the funds of
Georgia have been removed from the
State, VVe must say that we are glad
ol it; for the Atlanta Convention had
no right to appropriate one stiver of it,
even temporarily, nor do we think it
came within the scope of Gen. Meade’s
duties to aid them in doing so.
It seems that Gov. Jenkins not only
stole a tnarcii upon the Convention in
that respect, but also, (and legally)
forestalled the collection of a tax to pay
the expense of the Convention. To
our mind this argues not only an in
tention to test the constitutionality of
the Reconstruction Acts, hut a strong
confidence in their being set aside as
unconstitutional.— lbid.
