SAMUEL 17. SMITH, Eiilof and
CARTERSVILLE, GA., JAN If, to*. 1807.
to ttie pres sure ou oy r
advertising columns, this week, we sire
compelled to omit the publication of
much reading matter. This being the
commencement of anew \rn r, is the
reason why onr advertising columns
are so crowded, and may not Imbpoi
bo again during the year. We trust
our readers will bear with ua this week.
Swiss Beil Hißcfcis.—The Chatran
iiooga Times says of this company, to
say that the Peak family gave our cit
izens a first-class entertainment last
night, falls far short of doing justice to
them. Although the streets were in
such a wretched condition, there were
a goodly number of ladies present and
a very respectable audience. The en
tire programme was excellent and it
is scarcely right to mention any one
effort ns superior to the others. But
Master Prank Peak, in his songs.
“Think of your head in the morning,''
“The late lamented Jones” and “As
through the Park I go,” uus imsiza
ble. While his sister, Miss Fannie, in
“Mistress Jinks of Madison Square”
and the comic Yankee song, fairly car
ried the audience away. In the bell
ringing this troupe are unapproacha
ble. The bell duett of Charlie and
Fannie Peak is alone worth the price
of admission. The cornet echo solo of
Mr. DreskeH is hard to beat. We
advise everybody to go to-night, even
if the walking is bad. This entertain
ment is worth going out of one’s way
to see.
This cempany will give two perfor
mances in Cartersville, to-night,
(Wednesday,) and to-morrow night.
We are informed that the \cademy
Building, where the above troupe will
give their entertainments, will be heat
ed up, by means of stoves, until the
room will be perfectly comfortable.—
The character of this entertainment is
such as will not debar any lady or
gentleman from attending, Nothing
obsene or vulgar in the performances
—it is purely a musical entertainment,
such as we seldom witness in country
towns. Let all who can, go and en
joy it.
fltS“We are brought under many;
obligations to Mr. J. C. Martin, of the
Cartersville Mills, for a sack of very
superior Family Flour, sent to us with
the respects of the donor, as a Christ
mas present, for which he will accept
our unfeigned thanks. These mills
being located immediately m town, aie
a great convenience to our eitizeus.

fiST Messrs. Best k Kirkpatrick, of
this place, requests us to return their
thanks to their numerous customers
for the very liberal patronage bestow

iuv. Bullock has returned from
Washington, and issued his order con
vening the original Legislature, at the
Capitol in Atlanta, on Monday next,
the 10th inst., when the guillotine will
again be put to work, radicalizing that
body, preparatory to ratifying the XV
Amendment, and electing I;. S. Sena
tors. The Proclamation of Gov. Bul
lock reseats the expelled negroes, and
demands the administration of the oath
required by the XIV Amendment.—
Let there be silence in the lobby !
jQfChanges are now daily taking
place on the Western & Atlantic Rail
road. Col. E. Hulbert has been re
moved, and Foster Blodgett appoint
ed Superintendent in his stead; E. B.
Walker has fared the same fate, and
Supervisor A. L. Harris appointed
Master of Transportation in his stead,
both of these offices have been bleud
ed in one; W. H. Stallings, Treasurer;
James Mullen, Master Machinist; V. A,
GaskiH, Attorney for the Road. Thus
the guillotine, is at work.
are glad to see that active
hostilities have been commenced on the
Cartersville & Van Wert It. It., at last.
Tools and implements for work have
1 pen r.rriv'Eg for a fortnight, and, on
Monday night last a considerable lit
tle batch of bauds arrived, to be follow
ed immediately by otlhuu .
P. S.—Since penning the above, we
are rejoiced to see, that dirt is being
shovelled, in good earnest—the work
of grading was begun on Tuesday last.
Who can longer doubt that tlie Car
tersville & Van Wert Railroad will
be built ? We learn that about 400
bands have been engaged; but few of
that number have yet arrived, owing
to the want of sheltcrage. Mr. J. G.
Seai-s, of Griffin, Ga., is supervising
the work. Messrs. Ley man, ]3aum and
Robins are the contractors.
SguTlie following gentlemen were :
elected as the new Board of Com mis-;
eioners, for the town of Carfcersviljp, ;
on Saturday last, for the year 1870:
Aaron Knight, John C. Maddox, M.
C. Jackson, F. M, Johnson, and Llud-
Eay Payne.
Wo learn that Marshal Wilkinson j
is retained in office, and that License
to retail liquors will be kept up at three i
hundred dollars per annum.
From a conversation with some of
the new board, we learn that they will
probably continue in force the order of j
the old board, prohibiting the burial j
of the dead in the Baptist grave-yard, j
and will proceed to open the new one, |
the old Methodist grave-yard, with a I
little additional land; lay it oil', clean
it up, enclose it, and sell oii’ lots; they j
.do not propose to remove the dead j
from the former one, but ]eave that to j
discretion of tfceir frierde.
