DR. JOHN BULL—Dear Sir;—l have recently giv

wonderfully ellleadous. It has not failed in s single

some article of the kind. lam free to c nfess that 1

in writing you is to find out upon what terms I can

upon easy terras, I -.nail use a great deal of it lam
aware thai the use of such articles is contrary to the
teachings and practice of a great majority of the 1 ey

Dr. John Bull—Dear Sir: Knowing the efficiency
of your Sarsaparilla, and the healing and bereticU)
qualities it possesses. I send you the following state
ment of iny ease:
I was wounded about two years ago—was taken
prisoner and confined for sixteen months. Being
moved so often, my wounds hare not nea'ied yet. I
have not sat up a moment since 1 was wounded! I
am shot through the hips. My gencal health is im

have more faith In your Sarsaparilla than in any thing

P. B.—The following was written April 89,1865, by
Mrs. Jennie Johnson, mother of Capt Johnson.
DR. BULL—Dear Sir: My husband. Dr. C. 8. John
son, was a skillful surgeon and physician in Central
New York, where he died, leaving the above C. P.
Johnson to ray care. At thirteen years of age he had
a chronic diarrhcea and scrofula, for which I gave
him your Sarsaparilla. IT CURED HIM. I have for
ten years recommended it to many In New York, Ohio,
and lowa, for scrofula, fever s >res, and general debili
ty. Perfect success has attended it. The cure* effect
ed in eome cases oj scrofula and fever sores were
almost miraculous lam very anxious for my sod to
again have recourse to your Sarsaparilla. He is fear

you for it. His wounds were terrible, but I believe he
will recover. Respectfully, JENNIE JOHNSON.

The Lawyers aud the Cuts.
Two A) k a liens lawyers was domes
ticated in the rude hotel of a country
town. The hotel was crowded, and
the room allotted to our two heroes
was als > occupied by six or eight oth
ers. Shake-down beds, enough to ac
commodate the guests, were disposed
about the room, against the four walls,
leaving an open space in the centre of
the apartment.
Jude Clark lav with his head to the
north, on one side, and Judge Tomas
lay with Ins beau to the south, on the
other side of the room. So far as the
room was concerned, it might be said
that their heads represented the north
and south poles, respectively.
All the other oeds in the room were
occupied. The central part of the
room was deemed neutral ground, in
which tiie c ecu punts of the different
beds bud equal rights. He r, in pic
turesque confusion, lay the boots,
hats? coats and breeches of the sleep
ers. There were no windows, and
though the door was open, there be
ing no moon, the night was verry dark
in taut room.
The wily lawyers, who had been op
posing counsel in a case tried in tiie
town court that day, and had oppos
ed each other with the contumacity of
wild pigs, were now the very incarna
tion of meekness, for when the hungry
swarm of mosqui oessettled down aud
bit them on the one check, tney slow
ly turned the other to be bitten also.
“But hush ! liark !”
A deep sound strikes the ear like a
rising knell!
“Ye-ow-uw!”
Judge Clark and Thomas, were wide
awake, and sitting bolt upright in an
instant.
Again the starting cry !
“Ye-ow-yc-mv !”
“There’s a u -d cat!” whisper
ed Clark.
“Meat, you !” hissed Thomas.
Cat paid uo attention to these de
monstrations, but gave vent to anoth
er yowl.
“O, Lord!” cried Clark, “I can’t
staud this ! Where is she, Thomas ?”
“On vour side of the room some
where,’ replied Thomas.
“00, she's on your side,” said Clak.r
“Ye-ovv-ow-ow!
“There, 1 told you she was on your
side,” they both exclaimed in a breath.
And still the “yowl’ went on.
The idea now entered tiie heads of
both the lawyers, that by the exercise
J of certain strategy they might be cua
| bled to execute a certain flank move
ment on the cat, aud totally demoral
j zc him. Practically each determined
to file “a motion lo quash” the cat.’
| attachment for that room.
Each kept his plan to himself, and
in dark, unable to see each other, pre
pared for action.
Strange as it may appear it is nev
ertheless true, that the same plan sug
gested itself to both. In words, the
f plan would be about as follows:
The yowler is evidently looking and
calling for another cat, with whom he
lias made an appointment. I will im
itate a cat, and this cat will think
t’other cat’s around. This cat will
come toward me. and when he shall
have arrived within reach, I’ll blaze
away with anything 1 can get hold of
and knock the inew-sic out of him.
So each of the portly judges, noise
lessly as cream comes to the surface
of the milk, hoisted himself onto his
hands aud knees, and, hippopotamus
fashion, advanced to the neutral
ground occupying the central portion
of the room
Arrived there, Judge Clark selected
a boot-jack, and Judge Thomas a
heavy cow-lnde boot, from the heap,
aud settled themselves down to the
work.
Clark tightened his grip on the
boot-jack, throwing up his head, gave
vent to a prolonged and unearthly “Ye
ow-ow 1” that would reflected credit
upon ten of the largest kind of Cats.
“Aha” thought Thomas who was not
six feet away, * he’s immediately close
around. Now I’ll inveigle him ! and
he gavo the regular dark night call of
a feminine o t.
Each of the fudges.now advanced a
questioning “Ow ! ow!”
Thomas answered by a * reassuring
“Purwo ! pur!’’and they advance 1 a
little closer, and Clark produced u
questioning *,Ow 1 ow !”
Thomas answered by a reassuring
“Pnrow 1 pur!” and they auvanced a
little more. .
They were now within easy reach,
and each imganining the cat had but
a moment more to live, whaled away,
the one with his boots, the other with
lii.s boot-jack.
The boot took Clark square in the
mouth, demolished his teeth, and the
boot-jack came do vn on Tomas’ bald
head jus, as he was in the midst of a
triumphant “Ye-ow!”
When lights were brought the cat
had disappeared, but the catastrophe
was in opposite corners of the room,
with heels in the air, swearing blue
streaks.
Why do youn ladies whiten their
faces? Because they think the powder
will make them go off.
