A year or two ago I dined in San j
Francisco with the family of a pioneer j
and talked to his daughter, a young;
lady whose first experience in San j
Francisco was an adventure, though
she herself did not remember it, as
she was only two or three years old at
the time. Her father said that, after
lauding from the ship, they were walk
ing up the street, a servant leading the
party, with the little girl in her arms.
And presently a huge miner, bearded,
belted, spurred and bristled with dead
ly weapons —just down from a long
mining campaign in the mountains,
evidently barred the way, stepped the
servant, and stood gazing, with ft face
all alive with gratification and astou
nd ent. Tbeu he said reverently:
“Well, if it ain’t a little child !”
And then he snatched a leather sack
out of bis pocket and said to the ser
vant: ‘’There's a hundred and fifty
dollars in dust there, and I’ll give it
to you to let me kiss the child !” That
anecdote is true. But see how things
change. Sitting at that dinner table,
listening to that anecdote, if I had of
fered double the money for the privi
lege of kissing the same child, I would
have been refufed. Seventeen added
years had far more than doubled the

Lost Women. —With all its vngarits
absurdities, it antet be admitted that
the “strong minded” women sometimes
say things well worthy to be read and
pondered. Bead this from a speech
of Mrs. Burleigh, at the Woman’s
Suffrage Convention, in New Jersey;
“My friends, has it ever occurred to
you what a commentary upon our civ
ilization are these lost women and the
attiuude of society toward them ? A
little child strays from the borne in
closure, aud a whole community is on
the alert to find the wanderer and re
store it to its mother’s arms. What
rejoicings when it is found, what heart
iness of congratulation.
There are no harsh comments upon
the poor, tired feet, be they never so
miry, or reprimand for the soiled and
torn garments, no lack of kisses for the
tear-stained face. But let the child be
grown to womanhood, let her be led from
the inclosure of morality by the voice of
affection, or driven from it by the
scourge of want -what happens then V
l>o Christian men and women go in
quest of her ! Do they provide all
possible help for her return, or if she
returns of her own notion, do they re
ceive her with such kindness and deli
cacy as secures her against wandering
again? Fur from it. At the first
false step she is denounced as lost;
lost, echo friends and relatives—we
disown you; don’t never come near
us to disgrace us. Lost says society,
indifferently. How bad these girls
are ! Aud lost—irretrievably lost!—
is the prompt verdict of conventional
morality, while one and all unite in
bolting every door between her aud
respectability. Ah 1 will not these
lost ones be required at our hands in
the great Hereafter ?
