A Marriage Shorn of Poetry.
The Rev. D., a Methodist Minister,
stationed at Meadrille, oue eveiiiug
received a note informing him that j
a couple livingin the suburbs of the
city desired to be united in the bonds of
matrimony at nine o’clock in the morn
ing. At the proper time he went to j
the house designated He inquired oi;
a young lady who was busy washing
dishes if there was a oouple there who j
wished to be married.
"I am the lady,” said she blushing, j
“John will be in a moment.”
The minister was surprised to see j
no preparations, and stepped to the
door to view the surroundings. Two
men were hard at work grinding
sythes in the yard, and another, who
proved t ) be “John," was tending a
cow and calf. The young lady came
to the door pretty soon and shouted —
'John, John, hurry up; the preach
er's here!”
John leaped the fence and rushed in
to the house, the girl wiped her hands
on her apron, and after joining right
hands said they were ready. The
minister proceeded, and had just got
through with questioning the young
man when the old lady rushed into
the room shouting
“John, John, you didn’t turn the
cow away from the calf.”
John let go his sweetheart’s hand
instantly, and rushed into the barn
yard, put the cow through tha bars,
and returned to the house, again took
his position when the remainder of the
ceremony was performed. The minis
ter went on his way, John went to the
hay-field, and the lady resumed her
dish-washing.—Forrest Republican.
An Old Story.
It is 3aiU, at oue lime, when Loren
zo Dow preached under a large spruce
pine in South Carolina, he announced
another appointment for preaching in
the same place, on thai day twe.\e
montha The year passed, and as Lo
renzo was entering the neighborhood,
the evening preceding his appointment,
he overtook a colored boy who was
blowing a long tin horn, and could
send out a blast with rise and swell,
and cadence which waked tile echoes
of the distant hills.
Calling aside the blower, Dow said
to hiul:
“YVhat is your name, sir?”
“My name? Gabriel, sir!” replied
the brother in ebony.
“Well, Gabriel, have you be.n to
Church Hill
“Yea, rnassa, I’se been dar many a
tim*.’’
“Do you remember a big spruce piue
on that hill ?”
“O yes, massa, I knows dat pine.”
“Did you know that Lorenzo Dow 7
had an appointment to preach under
that tree to-morrow ?’
“O, yes, rnassa, everybody knows
dat. ’
“Well, Gabriel, I am Lorenzo Dow,
aud if you will take youi horn ami go
to-morrow morning and climb into that
pine tree, and hide among the branch
es, beforo the people begin to gather,
and w r ait there till I call you by name,
and then blow such a blast with your
horn as I heard you blow a minute a
go, I’ll give you a dollar. Will you do
it, Gabriel?”
“Yes, rnassa, I takes dat doll tr.”
Gabriel, like Zachesa, was hid away
in the tree top iu tine time. An im
mense concourse, of all sizes and col
ors, assembled at the appointed hour,
and Dow preached on the judgment of
the List day. By Ins power of descrip
tion he wrought Lee multitude up to
the opening scenes of the resurrection,
of the grand assize, at the cal* of the
trumpet peals of the nations. “Then,”
said he, “suppose, my friends, that we
should hear at this moment the sound
of Gabriel's trumpet.” Sure enough,
at that moment the trumpet of Gabri
el souuded. • The women shrieked, aid
many fainted; the men sprang up and
looked aghast; some ran; others fell
aud called for merer; and all felt, for
a time, that the judgment was set and
the books were opened. Dow stood
and watched the driving storm till the
fright abated, and some oue discovered ,
the colored angel who had caused the
alarm, quietly perched on a limb of
the spruce, and. wanted to get him
down and whip him, and then resumed j
his theme, saying, “I forbid all persons |
touching that boy up there. If a col-;
ored boy, with a tiu horn, can frighten j
you almost out of your wits, what will
you do when you shall hear the h um- j
pet of the arch-angel ? How will ye j
be able to stand in the wrath of God V”
He made a very effective application.
A Boston millionaire, with a lazy
son, recently gave the youth one week
in which to select some business for
himself. The week up the son spoke
thus: “Well, father, if you would ad
vance me $30,000 or $40,000, I would
invest it in government bonds, and
make my living by cutting off the
coupons.”
