T?i uter mine, h.,ve you ever weh mus
cadine hunting ? Yes, did you say ?
Very good. But did you go with the
jgirl«? .Still better. Bat did you ever
find the muscadines hanging ova r a
Brook, and no way to get them, save by
the wading and your shaking
them down, and looking upirard to
keep from getting dizzy? Oh! that
was the best wav of ail, wasn’t it?
But if these same sweet predicaments
have never fallen to your lot, envy me
not, but lister and the world shall jog
the easier for it.
One evening in she mellow days of
the summer of ’O4, the rosy-cheeked
and plump Miss Luiie , her
friend Miss ; a little lad live or
six years old, and tle writer, (who
was just old enough to have a ‘huuk

hills came the red light of the sun,
kissing the rustling com to ripeness,
incarnadining the woods, and clothing
with golden glory, the hili crests.on
either side of the valley. The brook
hastening by as if fleeing from the
warm sunshine, ran down to the dark
dells to laughingly purl against the
stones as it hounded river ward.
The creek, if the little stream is wor
thy of the name, was readied, and the
search for muscadines was begun.—
Up the stream we wandered, looking
into this leafy covert, peering into
that tangled mass of vines, for the cov
eted gleam of the black beauties. We
found thdn not. Just as wo were dos-'
pairing. _ our eyes caught the gleam ‘
ufir oil. Mitch tumbling over the
gravs, wild laughter, and a iuad race
to the gleamy berries, and exhausted
and panting, we hum I ourselves, oh,
horror ! under an old elm that had
stretched its limbs directly over the
brook. An en rmous muscadine vine,
us if in pity for its aged desolation,
had twined itself around the trunk,
climbed up, wreathe ! every bough; and
there, just out of our reach, hung the
muscadines, all twinkling- in the golden
k >tt,ing of their leaves, and seemed to
wink at us right gleefully. We wo’e
‘ foxos under tire arbor ’ but without
Bernard s philosophy, for our stoicism
was too weak to cry out ‘‘.sour grapes.’ j
We were in a quandary. The sun was j
rapidly sinking; our baskets were |
doubly reproaching us from gape g
mouth; and then, to go home without
a berry ! We stood gazing fervently
at the old tree, and ns fervently wish
ed it bent the other way. Presently,
the light of anew idea came beaming
fiom Miss Lulie's eyes. I know some
brilliant rotrp d'etat was to be executed
and waited patiently. After a few
moments spent in whispers and sup
pressed cachinalions, from which I
caught the words, “let’s wade;” “till,
no;” “nobody’ll see us.” “I don’t care
for him. ’ “W eli ’ , the young la
dies turned and gravely informed me
that they ‘intended to w de for those
muscadines!’ IHiat could I do? I
appeal to every candid mind, what
could Ido ? I couldn’t wade, for the
muscadines had to he shaken down.— :
Neither could I survey the scence from j
a point where “distance lends enchant
nient to the view.” Nor could I have 1
acted wisely in such an emergency 1
with my eyes bandaged. That I could j
not, is apparent from the fact that the j
ladies mado no attompt to blindfold
me. And even if they had, my sense
of duty was so strong that I seriously
doubt whether they would have suc
ceeded. All things said imperatively:
“boy, go for those muscadines!” * !
Climbing is at all times disagreeable;
but more especially so when the tree
is a bending one with rough bark, and
two or three quizzing young ladies re
viewing the ascent from below. I
toiled up slowly and scratchedly. As
I was ascending I could hear a little
splash “oh ! how cold ? ’ another
splash “(ioiut it feel good when
you get used to it ?” I didn’t know, 1
but from the chuclriings, T infered that j
it did. At length, when perched
among the top limbs, I ventured to
look down, I saw four don’t-look-tliis
way eyes, two pairs of cheeks, vying
the setting sun in blushes, and four'
white feet, through the toes of which
the bony ant brook ran kissirtgly along.
‘‘Look out ’. and a shower of gold
en leaves an 1 black berries fall splash
ing in the water. Twaa a lovely, tick-,
ling sight Tberberries went floating i
away, splashing here, making a I
wild grab here, an and gett. i n g !
a wofully small number of berries,
thus necessitating another shake. ;
Again a shower of leaves and fruit
stirred the old brook, and then an-1
other wild plashing and splashing and !
romping and stamping and treading'
on imaginary snakes, and wonderful
leaps in consequence. The little fel
low, sedate, taciturn and curious, fol
lowed with the basket to receive the
berries. After a few moments investi
gation, he said quietly, “Miss Luiie,
you re mighty fat!” “Where ’bouts,
Johnnie ?* The little fellow started;
’twas a poser, that ‘where ’bouts.’ He 1
was equal to the emergency; with a
liow-conld-you-ask-it look of innocence, !
“m your face I”.
All good things have an end! Eve- j
ry bow was shaken, every muscadine 1
dislodged, Few mpu knowhow to
Bear a descent; therefore mv pants and
temper were considerably disarranged
in my slide down the elm. With bas-1
kets laden an 1 hearts light we tripped j
merrily home. !
Often. since then, have bright eyes !
burned me, milky white arms and i
shapely ankles gleamed nromid me, but j
memory holds as sweetest, dearest, best,
that evening when the muscadines fell
so musically, the white fecit gleamed
so witchinglv, and the snuhgbit crown
ed us all With its shimmering glory.

Ha use is a clever fellow, and a deserv

He is a gentleman of industrious hab

was brave to a fault, and as a citizen
he is peacablo and law-abiding; and
although his vocation, in part, is frown

is due him to say that he keeps an or

Dangerous.—We would respectfully
call the attention of our town authori
ties to the cellar, comer of the public
square aud Market street. It is open
and deep, and dangerous for pedestri
ans passing at night, for we have no
lights. It should be planked up at
once.
Owing to the heavy receipts of cot- j
ton, now nearly half a million bales I
ahead of last year, and the decline in
gold, this staple has declined largely
in the last few days. Selling now at
this place at 20| cents, aad we think
our farmers would do well to sell even
at this rate, af it may go still lower,
aad 20 cents is a good price, and there
will be the largest crop pitc .ed this
spring of any since the war.
