fgrln traveling on the raiboad 1* -
tween this point and Atlanta, las'. vv< ek,
we met up with a gentleman who i-*
now engaged on the Cart< ..>v".!l< k Van
Wert Railroad. Upon inlerrug Ring
him as to his couifto of travel, he re
plied : “I tun going to Middle * Geor
gia after my family. I expert to cnrrv
them to Bartow County, for I never
knew what a good nswd! os pretty
country was, until I saw that between
Cartersville and Van Wert.” Standing
in a rear porch of the residence of th*
late lamented R. H. Rowland, a few
days since, in company with a couple
of friends, we look a view in a north
ern direction* of that and adjoining
firms—overlooking the volley of the
rippling Etowah, cast ahd wi st, and a
more lovely scene seldom greets our
eyes than was there presen. ed. Hun
dreds of acres of rich cultivated river
bottom lands, apparently as level as
the outspreading prairies of the west,
interspersed with green wheat fields,
resembling the spots upon a carpet;
the meanderings of the river through j
the cen tre of the valley, dividing those i
magnifieeut homesteads; the handsome
° . |
and statety residences looking out and
down upon the beaut if.ii valley from j
the surrounding hill top.c; and last but
not least, the mvdy constructed track
of the C'n 4 ' v r*wi!!e k Van Wert Rail-j
road running diagonally across those
magnificent farms, where soon the iron i
horse is to speed its course, amidst the
gaase of th >nsnn Is of admiring witnes-1
Siw; ill combine to make the scene one
of a lsnrpassod grandeur, and involun
tarily we fovto 1 welling up in our heart |
gr.mitijdo, to the Great Architect, for ,
having cast oar 1 >t in such a beautiful j
and g>j lly laud. We fully agree with ,
our friend on the cars, no lovelier j
country was ever opens 1 to settlers t
than But lying between Cartersville i
and Vita Wert, an I around Stilesboro. j
We are pleased to note «he fact that !
our farmers are sowing largely of oats,
and never has as much clover been
sown as is, and will b«, this spring.—
This is the policy, and wo urge upon
them the necessity of planting corn !
enough to meet all demands next year. ;
Cotton, in all probability, will be lower :
next crop, and those who make plenty |
of food for man and beast, will assur- j
edly bo the best off*
Although we have excellent schools
here, still there is a need of a high Fe- !
male Institution, where young ladies I
could graduate in the higher brandies j
of education, and have tha advantages j
of aparatus illustrating chemical and j
natural sciences. If such a Professor j
as I>r. S. O. Hillyor could be secured,
such an Institution would be success
ful, for we know of no place in upper j
Georgia offering better indu ements.
We are pleased to learn tint the j
Baptist Church in this place has been j
finished so far as to have Divine wor
ship regularly, cu the first, second and
third Sabbaths of each month. The
building itself reflects credit on the de-'
nomination, and i3 an ornament to the
town.
Good Templars will march in
procession from their Lodge-room to
the Methodist Church, on Thursday
the 3rd instant, at 7, p. m., to listen to
an oration to be delivered by Dr. Do
zier, on the subject of Temperance. —
Tiio public are invited, and we say to
them go; let the church be filled, for
this is a good cause.
Cariersville Lodge, Vo. 101,
F, A. 71-
In accordance with a resolution of
the rand Lodge, ad members of Car
terßville Lodge are ordered to attend
the next regular communication, which j
will be held on Friday the 4th instant, |
to hear the proceedings of the Grand j
Lodge read.
By order of the W. M.
S. H. PATTILLO.
