New York, where he died, leaving the above C. P.

a chronic diarrhoea and scrofula, for which I gave

Tlie Season and its Rangers.
The hitman body is chiofly composed of tis
sues and fibres as sensitive to every change
in the condition of the atmosphere as the
most delicate electrometic, or the quicksil
ver in a barometer tube.
The stomach, the skin, the nerves, the
lungs.and the excrotory organs are especial
ly liable to be affected by these variations,
and the best defence against their disastrous
tendency is to keep the digestive machinery,
which feeds and nourishes the whole system,
in good working order.
If the stomach is weak or disordered nei
ther the blood nor the bile can be in a healthy
state, and upon the fitness of these two im
portant fluids for the offices assigned to them
by nature, and the regularity of their flow,
health in a great measure depends.
When the air is heavily laden with chill
ing vapors, as it often is at this season of
the year, the digestion should be an object
of peculiar eare. If it is weak and languid
the whole physical structure will be enerva
ted. If it is vigorous, tlie entire organiza
tion will bo strong to resist the untoward
and depressing influence of a damp and vi
tiated atmosphere.
A pure and powerful tonic is therefore es
pecially needed as a safeguard against the
diseases most common in the spring, and
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters being the most
wholesome and potent medicine of the class
at present known, a course of it is particu
larly advisable at tnis period of the year.—
The stomach will thereby be toned and
strengthened, the liver and bowels regulat
ed, the nervous system braced up, and na
ture put in a state of active defence against
the miasma which superiuduces intermittent
and remittent fevers, rheumatisms, nervous
debility, headache, hypochondria and other
complaints which are apt to assail the un
toned and unfortified organizations The
body is strengthened without exciting the
brain, and consequently no unpleasant re
action follows its reviving and renovating
operation.

AN ILLINOIS LADY LIVES TWENTY YEARS WITH
OUT SEEING A MINISTER.
A Methodist minister was on his
travels through the west of Illinois
twenty years ago. Illinois was a wild
place then, lie traveled twenty miles
"one day without coming to a farm
house. But there he was received with
hospitality. Chicken pot pie and com
dodgers composed his supper; but to a
hungry man these are as good as a
truffled turkey.
A fine old grandmother of the house
was most profuse in her hospitality.—
She pressed the pot-pie on the holy
man’s plate till he could cat no more.
And then, when the family was gath
ered around the great log-chimney and i
its blazing fire, the venerable dame o- j
peued her mouth, and thus spake:
“Ah, well-a-dny! it’s a grind com
fort to have a minister of the Gospel
in these parts. It’s twenty years agone ;
now since I have seen on ’em. I’ve
been a reactin’ o’ my Bible all that time
waitin’ to see a minister to ax kirn a
question about something I don’t light
ly understood.”
“Madun,” answered the cautious
minister, “I am so tired with my long
ride that I could not enter into a seri- j
ous question until I have slept; but if j
you will ask me to-morrow morning 1
before I set out I will answer it to the '
best of my ability.”
The ola lady expressed herself 3atis
tied, and the cunning minister secured j
a soft couch for the night. The next
morning grandma was up early, and
hard at work, frying slapjacks for the
minister’s breakfast. This last being
dispatched, the old lady was still in a
nervous fidget about her question,
while the holy man’s horse was saddled
and brought to the door.
After adjusting his saddle bags and
shaking hands with all the family, he
mounted his horse, and, turning to her,
asked :
“And now, madam, what is your
question?”
“ A’aal, minister,” said she, “yer 1 now
how it sez in the Bible, that alter Eli
sha was made a prophet, the heaven’s
opened and Elijah was taken np to
heaven in the chariot and horses o’
fire. It’s better than twenty years sin’
I seed that ere in the Bible, and I have
puzzled over it ever since; an’ there
ain’t a soul roun’ these diggins knows
any more nor I. But you're a minister
o’ the Gospel, and ought to know all
them things. Now what I want to
know is this : Did the Lord take up
Elijah right slick to heaven, or didn’t
he go kinder slantendicular ?”
History has not recorded the minis
ter’s reply.
Useful I&cclpes.
Eon Foundee ix Houses.— Clean out
the affected foo* or feet, till full of spir
its of turpentine, touch lire and burn
them out. The he rse will be well in a
few moments.
Eon Cough in Houses.— Clean out
and pare the frog of the fore foot—
hold the foot up and till with spirits of
turpentine—hold it up till it soaks in,
then take the other up aud do likewise.
I have cured them with this treatment
with the worst form of a cough I ever
saw a horse have, and never knew it
to fail but in one instance, and I pre
sume the cause of it was that the foot
was so hard and irony that the turpen
tine would not soak in. I held up the
foot as long as the horse could stand
on one foot, and it did not seem to
penetrate in the least. I tried it fre
quently, with the same result.
Cure for Hog Cholera.— Feed your
hogs on the ground with shelled corn,
and while they are eating, sprinkle
them plentifully with fresh slacked
lime in a fine dry powder, until the
hair is full of the lime. AVhether it is
what they eat with the corn or what
they inhale, I am unable to say—prob
ably both; but it has never failed to
arrest the disease when tried. It
should be done once a day until the
disease disappears.
How to Cube Warts on 1 Corses,
Mules or Cosw t s. —Dissolve | pound of
alum in a quart of water; with a brush
or wet cloth wet the warts twice each
day for ten days—they will disappear.
I saw this recipe in some of the agri
cultural works as a cure for warts on
cows’ teats. I tried it on a youog
horse whose nose was nearly covered
with them. They were very trouble
some and tender, often bleeding. Four
applications entirely cured or rather
took them off.
Gravelled Horses. —Give two-thirds
of a table spoonful of saltpetre in a lit
tle salt for three consecutive days; or
take a pint of watermelon seed, and
boil in two quarts of water, till reduced
to nearly one-half, and drench two
mornings in succession; your horse will
be cured.
For Sweeny. —Take half an ounce
pulverized eantharides (Spanish llies,)
put into half a pint sweet oil, shake
well and apply well twice a day. It
need not interfere with the work of
the animal.
Bots. —One-half pint whiskey, one
half pint of gun powder, ouc-hnif pint
molasses, and one-half pint soft soap,
will cure the worst case of bots. An
other cure is—“a strong tea made of
mullein."
Warts on Fowls. —Make a strong
solution of salaratus, or soda water,
(the latter is preferable,) take a soft
piece of cloth or feathers and bathe the
wai ts twice a day, (after first scarify
ing them,) in a few days the warts will
entirely disappear.
Lice on Chickens. —Sprigs of cedar,
scattered about the find house, will re
lieve them of this awful pest. Tar in
the chicken trough is a preventive of
disease. —All the above from the South
