“St« here, mister,” said a lad
driven up to a tree by a ferocious
dog, “it you don’t take that dog
away, I’ll eat up all your apples.”
“ I can speak seven different lan
guages,” said a convict, as he entered
a penitentiary. “No matter,” said
the keeper, “we have but one lan
guage here and very little of that.”
In an article on a recent Fair, the
editor of a paper says a brother edi
tor took a valuable premium ; but an
unkind policeman made him put it
right back where he took it from.
A bare-footed, bare-headed little
boy, astonished a worshiping congre
gation, a few Sundays ago, by rush
ing into the church and exclaiming,
“ Where’s my pap? The pigs are
out.”
It is said to be the custom with
some of the colored sch<x>l teachers in
the South, to kindle a hunger for
knowledge in the refractory juvenile
breast by eating up their luncheons
when the recitations are poor.
An inebriated Democrat was din
ing at the Lanier house the other
<lay. “ Beef, mutton, veal or chick
en,” said the polite waiter. “ I don’t
care a d—n,” was the relpy, “any
thing to beat Grant.”
When a man signs his name “11.
G. Hnriith,” it is’nt always safe to ask
him if his first name is “ Horace
Greeley.” An irasable Democrat
who was asked that question, return
ed for an answ'er, “ Do you think my
parents were d—d fools, sir? My
name is Horatio Gates Smith, sir!”
An Indianapolis young man re
ceived this: “Mr. : The next
time you do what you did last night
we will have it right then and there.
You know what 1 mean I guess
—. If you don’t I can make you. I
mean the kissing business.
P. S. Henceforth we meet as ene
mies. .”
A man in the country was taken
dangerously ill. He sent for his wife
to come at once and nurse him. Now
his wife’s mother was sick, too, and
she sent this dispatch to her languish
ing husband: “Dear Jim—Mother
is sick ; I can’t leave her. Do the
best you can. If you die send your
body home.”
T once knew an industrious boy
whose parents were poor but honest.
He began in life without a cent. He
itad a wart on his nose and a sore foot;
hut nothing daunted he worked with
a determination and a will hacked hy
perseverance and energy, and nobly
fought his way along, surmounting
every obstacle. Mark the result.
Last week I met him for the first
time in ten years and that little boy
began life only ten years ago without
a cent, and hasn’t got a red cent yet.
Oh, how wonderful!
A foppish passenger on a Mississip
pi boat, who “just for fun,” jumped
on shore at a landing and drawing a
bowie knife, rushed up to a gawky
looking fellow at a wood pile exclaim
ed: “ I have found you at last—you
are the man I’ve been looking for.”
The gawky looked at him for half a
second, then straightened out his arm
like a jibboom and knocked the fop
overboard into ten feet of water. Re
suming his position against the wood
pile, he drawled out: “Is there any
body else on the boat looking for
me?”
Oh, the bonnets of my girlhood,
the kind 1 wore at school. I really
thought them pretty, I must have
been a fool. And yet J used to think
myself on hats a jaunty miss ; per
haps I was as fashion went, but whal
was that to this? Oh, the lovely lit
tle pancake, the charming little mat!
It makes my head so level and so
very, very, flat. Oh, a sister’s love
is charming, as everybody knows;
and a handsome cousin’s love is nice
(that is I should suppose), and the
love of a true lover is a love that can
not pall; but the love of anew bon
net is the dearest love of all.
A certain elder, who was noted for
seldom being up to time, seldom ani
mated, and seldom very brief, once
kept a congregation waiting a long
time for his appearance, and w T hen at
last he did come, he preached them
a sermon of unusual length on the
text “ Feed my Lambs.” He had not
finished when the original old minis
ter rose from a seat in the congregation
and said, “ Brother, I have had some
experience in raising lambs myself,
and I have found that the following
rules are absolutely essential to suc
cessful lamb-raising: First, give them
food in season; second, give them a
little at a time, and third, give it to
them warm.”
BITIJIR AND 111$ DOG.
A correspondent sends us the fol
lowing anecdote of Ben Butler,
which he says has never appeared in
print, but, as it is illustrates the char
acters of the man, it is too good to be
lost.
Ben Butler was a down-east lawyer
before he got to be a major-general
and a representative of his district in
Congress. Like all lawyers, Ben had
a hard pull of it at the start, and per
haps the sharpness and acumen for
Which he is so universally celebrated
Were acquired at this early period of
his life, when he was striving for a
practice, and the odds were brains or
starvation.
One day, while sitting in his office,
there entered a long-legged, gaunt,
hatchet-faced specimen of the genus
Yankee, who looked sharp enough
to make his meals off pins and nee
dles, and who thus accosted the fu
ture Congressman:
“Mr. Lawyer, I am going into a
little bit of law r business, and as vou
seem to be a right smart, plucky sort
of chap, I thought I might as well
give the job to you.”
“AH right,” says the lawyer,
“ you cfm’t trust your case in better
hands.”
“ Well, then, I had a ham hanging
in an out-shed, and a neighbor’s dog
came along and ate it. What would
you do ?”
“ Why, prosecute the owner of the
dog, of course. Make the fellow' pay
for damages.”
“That’s the talk, Mr. lawyer,”
said the Yankee, with a sly smile be
ginning to work around the corners
of his eves and mouth. “But you
see—l don’t know as it makes any
difference—the dog was your’n.”
Butler opened his eyes a little at
this onslaught, but he wasn’t going
to be taken aback in that manner,
even by a brother Yankee.
“What do you value your ham
at?” asked Butler, drawing out his
wallet.
“ Well, I guess five dollars will be
letting you off cheap,” said the Yan
kee, “ for it was an all-fired good
ham.”
Without entering a word of protest,
Butler paid the money and then said:
There is your damage for the
ram. Now fork over ten dollars*’*
What for ?” inquired the Yankee,
turn, astonished.
i bjgal advice,” said But
. * f don ’ 1 suppose I can work
without a fee, do you ?”
Mr. Y ankee was bit, so drawing a
face as long as his legs, he slowly
counted out the moirey, and inward
ly verged he .would bring no more
law business before the youthful but
razor-iike -dispenser of Coke and
Blackstone. -

Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
For the relief and
cure of all derange
meuts in the atom
ach, liver, and bow-
fTf els. They are a mild
kj . aperient, and an
wjJ?* excellent purgative,
— rr Being purely vege
'v~' tal.de, they contain
no mercury or mine
ral whatever. Much
serious sickness and
zrv suffering is prevent
ed by their timely
use; and every family should have them on hand
for their protection and relief, when required. ,
Long experience has proved them to ire tne saf
est, surest, and best of all the Mills with which
the market abounds. 15y"their occasional use,
the blood is purified, the corruptions of the sys
tem expelled, obstructions removed, and the
whole machinery of life restored to its healthy
activity. Internal organs which become clogged
and sluggish are cleansed by Ayer’s Mills, and
stimulated into action. Thus incipient disease
is changed into health, the value of which change,
when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy
it, can hardly be computed. Their sugar coating
makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their
virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so
th At they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable.
Although searching, they are mild, ami operate
without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or
occupation.
Full directions arc given on the wrapper to
each box, how to use them as a Family Physic,
and for the following complaints, which these
Mills rapidly cure:
For Dyipepsia or Indigestion, Listless
ness, Languor and I.oss of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach, and restore its healthy tone and action.
For JLiver Complaint and its various symp*
toms, Bilious Headache, hick Head.
ache. Jaundice or Green Sickness, Bil
ious Colic and Bilious fevers, they should
be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the
diseased action or remove the obstructions which
cause it.
For llysentery or IHarrhora, but ono
mild dose is generally required.
For niieumattam. Clout, Cl ravel, Pal
pitation of the Heart, Pain in the
hide. Back and Coins, they should be contin
uously taken, as required, to change the diseased
action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings,
they should be taken in large and frequent doses
to produce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression, a large dose should be
taken, as it produces the desired effect by sym
pathy.
As’ a Dinner Mill, take one or two Mills to
promote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels, restores the appetite, and invigorates the
system. Hence it is often advantageous where
no serious derangement exists. One who feels
tolerably well, often finds that a dose of these
Mills makes him feel decidedly better, from their
cleansing and renovating effect on the digestive
apparatus.
