Southern Mutual Life Insurance
Company.
At the annual mectiug of this company
in Columbia. S C., tho 10th inst., Mr. l>
!’• Willoox, of this city, was elected one
of the Directors
Sew Advertisements.
J. A. Whiteside & Cos., present great
inducements to purchasers who would pay
cash for Drugs, and make no accounts in
that line in 1800. See their advertise
ment.
Persons having houses aud lots to rent
are referred to the advertisement of Gil
bert, Lea & Cos.
Mr. I) D. Ridenhour has a few more
houses and lots to rent for the next year.
Mr. J. Rhodes Browne wishes to hire
a good Cook, Washer and Ironer.
Incorporated.
Me are informed that the Columbus
Water Works Company have been incor
porated at the pieseut term of the Supe
rior Court for th.s county, and therefore
taken upon itself all the liabilities, as
well as tights and privileges, of a body
corporate. We have seen a letter from
one of the principal contiactors, who
announces that he will ariive here (lie
first week in January next, to commence
the work of construction.
Accidently !?liot.
Tuesday about 12 o’clock, Thomas Ev
ens was accidently shot on Broad Sireet.
by Joh u Holt. They were playing wiih
a pistol near Needham's Grocery and Pro
vision Store, when it was accidently dis
charged and resulted in wounding Evans
probably severely, ‘out not dangerously.
Holt manifested his distress at the acci
dent by loud and prolonged cries, while
Evans seemed perfectly unconcerned.—
Loth of them are doubtless convinced that j
pistols are dangerous playthings.
A miserable Rond.
Whoever are the parties interested in I
the Plank Road leading to the Wharf
should have it repaired, especially that
part ol it ou the hill. As it now stands it
is worse on a team and wagon than the
old dirt institution. If the work is a pub
lic one, tho Council should by all means
direct the attention of the street commit
tee to it, At all events some notice of
its condition should be taken by the an
tborities.
Astrology.
Madame Clifton, the fortune teller, an
nounces her arrival in the city, and slops
at (he Planter’s Hotel, where she is al
ways ready to cast her horoscone and
predict the future of those who consult
her. All who would know their destiny
and “take time by the forelock” will act
accordingly.
Ralloon Ascension.
Mons. Murat, with the mammoth bal
loon, made an serial asceusion Saturday
evening from the Oglethorpe lot. It rose
gradually and moved majestically in an
easterly direction, and descending, land
ed amid the surburban beauties and
other attractions of Wynnton. We would
suggest that the ascension might be con
sidearably improved by commencing the
inflation sooner, and progressing with it
slowly and surely.
Accident to tile River Bride.
We regret to learn that this deservedly
popular little steamer met with a serious
accident on Tuesday morning, in having
her boiler entirely burned out. The en
gineer had caused the boiler to be filled
the evening before, and mistrusted noth
ing wrong when fires were put in next
morning. The accident will cause her
delay until anew boiler can be supplied,
which will be within two or three weeks
at the outside. Her cargo has been
transfered to a barge, and leaves tor the
landings below this morning. It is for
tunate that we have in our city a boiler
manufactory, where such accidents as
this can soon be remedied. The Colum
bus Iron Works, we believe, is to fufuish
the new boiler. .
Volunteer Company in Girard.
The necessity for a bet ter military or
ganization at the South, (its military
system being a farce,) has stimulated the
citizens of our neighboring Alabama
town, Girard, to form a Volunteer Com
pany, and we are glad to learn that the
project is received with geueral favor.
Fifty or sixty names have already been
enrolled, and a meeting is to be held some
time this week to organize the company.
Every town or village at the South should
have a Volunteer Company, armed by the
State, and let the inefficient militia drill
be abandoned. — Enquirer, 19 th.
Tlie Runyan Panorama.
Other engagements interfered wiih our
intention to visit the Panorama of “Pil
grim's Progress,” on exhibition at Tem
perance Hall, Wednesday evening. We
learn from others who were present, that
it was well patronized, and afforded them
instruction as well as amusement. From
all we have learned, we feel warranted in
recommending all to attend who would
see a fine production of American art.
The manager is highly recommended as a
gentleman, and is worthy of the patron
age of the community. As may be seen
by advertisement, the third exhibition
will be given to-night.
Avery respectable audience attended
the exhibition of the Panorama of
“ Pilgiim’s Progress,” at Temperance
Hall, Thursday night. This work of art
is not only a source of rational amuse
ment, but of benefit in salutary impres
sions upon the spectator. The exhibi
tions will be continued this afternoon and
to-night. All should avail themselves of
tbe opportunity to see it. As tires are
kept in the Hall during the day and at
night, visitors will be quite comfortable.
