s£s®reMswtr©. I g ... ■ r -.^_ Fititu ilie Life of Mrs. Jordan. flir Wesltyan and tLr Atlrra. During Mrs. Jordan’* short stay ut Chester, j where she had been performing, her washer. | woman, a widow with three small children, was by a merciless creditor thrown into prison, A small debt of about forty shillings had been ‘■lncreased in a short time, by law expense, to ; eight pounds. As soon as Mrs- Jordan hud heard of the circumstances, she sent lor the at- I toritey, and paid him the demand, and observed i with as much severity as her good nutured j countenance could assume : ‘You lawyers ais certainly infernal spi'ils, allowed on earth to make poor mortals misera ble.’ The attorney, however, pocketed the affront, and with alow bow made his exit. On the afternoon nl'the suuie day, the poor | woman was liberated. As Mrs. Jordan was j taking her usual walk with her servant, the. wid- . ow with her children followed her, and just ! as she had taken shelter from a shower of rain, in a kind of porch, dropping on her knees, and ] with much grateful emotion, exclaimed, ‘Cod forever bless yon, Madame ! you have ■ saved tne and my poor children from ruin,’ The children, beholding their mother’s tears, added by their cries to the afteeting scene, which a sertstiive mind could nut behold but with a strong feeling of sympathy. The until rl liveliness of Mrs. Jordon’s- disposition was not easily damped by sorrowful scenes. How. ever, altho’ she strove to hide it, the tear of feeling stole, down her cheek, and stooping to kiss the children, she slipped n pound note in to the mother’s hand, and in her usual playful manner replied. •There, there : now it’s all over. Cos, good Woman. Cod bless you ! Don’t say another word.’ The grateful creature would have replied, but j her benefactress insisted on her silence and de. J part tire. It happened that another person had taken j shelter under the porch, and witnessed the j whole interesting scene, who as soon as Mrs. j Jordan observed him, came forward, and In; holding out his hand, exclaimed with a deep sigh, •Lady pardon the freedom of a stranger, but would to the Lord they were all like thee !’ The figure of the man bespoke his calling, j His countenance was pale, and a suit of sable | rather the worse for wear, covered his tall j spare person. The penetrating eye ofThalia’s | favorite votary soon developed his character j and profession, and with her wonted good l.u- i mor, retreating a few paces, she replied, ‘No, 1 won't shake hands with you.’ •Why !’ •Because you arc a Methodist preacher, and when you know who 1 am,you will send me to j the devil.’ •The Lord forbid! I am, as you say a j preacher oftlie Gospel of Jesus Christ, who tells | us to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and re- j lieve the distressed, and do you think I can be- ; hold a sistei fulfilling the command* of my great ! Master, without feeling that spiritual attachment which leads me to break through worldly cus loins and oiler you the hand of friendship and brotherly love !’ ‘Well, well, you are a good old soul I dare | say ; but I don’t like fanatics, and you’ll not ! like tne when I tell you I am a player.’ The preacher sighed. ‘Yes, I am a player ; and you must have heard of me. Mrs. Jordan is my name.’ Alter a short pause lie again extended his hand, and with a complaisant countenance re- | plied, •The Lord bless thee, whoever thou art.— | Ilis goodness is unlimited. He has poured on thee a large portion of his spirit ; and as to thy calling, if thy soul unpraid thee not, the Lord forbid that 1 should.’ Thus rccimcilad, they left the porch together. The offer of his arm was accepted, and the lb. anale Roscius of comedy and disciple of John \\ esley proceeded, arm in arm, to the door of Mrs. Jordan’s dwelling. At parting, the preacher shook hands with her, saying, •Fare thee well sister. I know not what the ! principles ol people of thy calling may he.— j Thou art tlie first I ever conversed wiih ; hut if their benevolent practices equal thine, l hope and trust, at the great day, the Almighty God ; ■will say to each, ‘ Thy sins are lorgiven thee.’ Mr. Hurd, the celebrated teacher of Gram, mar, once on a time ( at Hupkinton, Mass.) set his class to parsing the following lines trom Pope : “ Heaven from all creatures hides the book of fate. All hut the ng” prescribe,’ Ac. i The word all in the second line had been ! parsed, when coining to the word ‘ but,’ and directing his eye to the next pupil, the master said, “ Uni, the next.’ No sooner was the word out, than plump j went the head ot the pupil into tho bread bask et of his next neighbor. “Boo! hoo ! hoo!” roared the latter most j lustily. # “ W hat are you about there ?’ said the mas- j ter to the former. ••1 am butti n the next, sir, as you told me to,’ , replied the lad. Printing Opfick Cowussamiox.—“ Ah ? Mr. Editor, I've caught you at last. I want to see you on particular business'’ “ Must excuse us, dear si r—foreign news an ab-squatulation, swindling operation, und a dreadful murder to be prepared instunter.’ “Can’t you be spared live minutes ? ‘ Not one.’ “ Not half an one !’ “ Not a second.” “Devil.) “Copy, sir!”’ ( But if you could “Pardon u*—must write.” “ Why I want to pay you some money.’ “ II hctc-ew-ew-cw-ir.ir.ic .’ bom t—em em.em ! Sir, \ve are at your service—wtmt’s the amount TANARUS” An Editor in Tium iii.e.—E.* Pei*| Howe, editor of the Oxford (M iss.) DeillO-Nl crat, thus humorously describes some of bis I labors and the result of iiis wile's:—“ We liave particularly been engaged during the most of this week, in the baby line; cutting up domestitmintoslips of suitable shape; i„ preparing lard mid bec.wtu, pap, kc. ke. ‘ washing ilithes ; keeping a small armv of young Howes from raising lltc old hoy, aod otherwise domestically amusing ourself in consequence of which interesting philosoph ical, physiological?und household diverlisc nient we are unable to isue but half a sheet to.day. Do you know bow little it laky* to make a multitude happy : Stu b trifles as a penny, a wind. Hint a smile, do the work —There are two or three little boys passing along—give them each a cln soul, and bow smiling they look; we II be hound to say they will not be cross lor an hour. A poor widow’ lives tn our : tieigboiiilmod, win* is the owins of half a tiii'/.en i liiloivn ; send in half a peek of sweet | apples, and they will ail be happy. A child ■ has I \j si Ins arrow —all the win Id to him—and { lie mourns sadly; help him find it, or make him another, and bow quickly will the sun shine play upon bis sober lace. A boy lias as much as In: can do to pile up a load of wood ; assist him, a few moments, or speak a plea ant word to him, and lie forgets his task and work away without minding it. Your apprentice lias broken a mug, or cut the vest too lohg, or lie has “ left an out,” or “pied a stickful;” say “you scoun drel,” and lie feels miserable : but remark ••I am sorry: try to do belter,” and what a difiiereiice in bis feelings! You have em ployed a man : pay him cheerfully, and speak a kind word to him, and be leaves j your house with a contented heart, to light j up his own hearth with smiles of gladness. JAs you pass along the street, you meet many | familiar faces : say “ good morning,” as ; [tlioogh you felt happy, and it w ill work ad- ! mirably in the heart of your neighbor. C/*’Tbe highest offices are like the tops of j high rocks, they can be reached only by ea- j gles and reptiles. Every evil is an occasion and a teacher of j resolution. Every disagreeable emotion is I a proof that 1 have been faithless to my res- I oliitioiis. An evil vanishes, if I do not ask after it. Think of a worse situation than that in which tliou art. Not to the evil, but to myself, do 1 owe my pain. Epictetus was not unhappy ! Vanity, insensibility, and custom, make one steadfast. Wherefore not virtue still more ? Never say, if you bad not THESE sorrows, that you would bear all others belter. What is sixty years’ pain to eternity f Necessity, if it cannot be altered, becomes resignation. Most men judge so miserably, why would you be praised by a child? I Nn one would praise you in your beggar’s J frock : be not proud of the esteem llint is J given to your coat. Look upon every day as the whole of life, j not merely as a section; and enjoy the [ires- j ent without wishing to spring on to another j section that lie* before tlier. Do not seek to justify all thv actions. Value untiling merely because it is thy own, and look not always upon tlivself. A long continued walk is better than a short flight. Never act in the beat of emotion ; let rea son answer first. In seeking virtue, if you find poverty, be not ashamed; the fault is not yours. Though virtue gave a ragged livery, shegives a gold- ! eii con nuance. Do not expect more esteem from other’s I because you deserve more, but reflect that; they w ill expert still more merit in yourself, j Seek to acquire that virtue in a month to j w hich tliou let lest the least inclined. Editors. —Editor's duties, even in a • case comi'arnt’n el v unimportant, are enumer oiis and unthankful: those be praise, love j him less than their dinner, and those that lie find fault w ith, hate him “ worse than the devil.” If lie step out manfully’, lie can scarcely avoid treading nmv and then on somebody’s toes, who will make a point of never tin getting it; while those on whom he may bes'.mv commendation (even if nothing more substantial,) during Ids journey, will quietly place it all to the accounts of llitir ■ own merits.—The Builder. ThatOi.d Tea Keiti.f. Don’t throw away that old cracked tea i kettle i say : said Aunt Pat y Parley. It is j one of the most useful unit It'S in the pot elos- : el. When you have a cracked tea kettle, then you have one of the best things in the world j lor cooking potatoes. Wash them, cut oti the end where the eves j are thick, and put them in the tea kettle j without any water, and hang it over a mod erate fire, and in an half hour or so you will have your potatoes baked, dried and mealy, andju>t the very thing fora gaud dinner. Tlie nose ol the kettle allows all the mois ture oftlie vegetable to escape, and a crack- , ed tea kettle is indispensable to good eat ing.” Save your Soap Suds. —There is scar cely a plant that is not benefiited by water- | inguitli soapsuds.
