The Hugar Crop.
With some pretty good means of knowing. ha\

in regard to the crop of the present ) ear, we hav e
put the sugar crop of Louisiana for 1858 down at
300,UV6 hogsheads. We feet confidant that we
have iiot under estimated the crop. Let us ex

The overflow destroyed, it is estimated, from
rixty to seventy-five thousand hogsheads of sugar,
or its equivalent.
It probably destroyed forty thousand acres of
mue. and this vast sheet of land will have to he
planted by cane taken from other fields, and that
would have beau made into sugar but for the
overflow.

Import* of Dry hood* at .New York
The imports of foreign dry-goods at the port of
New York during the year 1858 have been less
thun for any previous year since 1850. There
may be some difference of opiniuu in regard to the
remote causes of the an- press ion : but the reasons
for the immediate decline in the imports, says the
Journal of Commerce, are Nudity understood.
When the financial crisis In 1857 had culm inn ted
in the suspension of the hanks, the foreign trade
of this city was found to be more disorgnuixed than
at any period during tue previous ten years. We
have never aeeu a time when it was so difficult to
close out mi invoice of goods at either private or
publie hhlc in this city as during the uuiuiuu of
1867. This cut off the orders for the spring of
1868, aud in fact created such a distrust abroad
(hat but few orders wouldJiavc been accepted if
they bad been sent.
There has li©en a fair trade during the last few
months of the year, but the total imports of dry
goods for 1838 arc j536.376.ft20 less thun for 1857,
*33,208,384 less thaji for the year 1856, and
$4,819,553 less than for the year IH6®. The im
ports during the past three years were as follows :
1856 $93,302,893
1857 90,534,129
1868 A0,154,509
The greatest comparative decline was iu the
imports of cottons, the decrease being Really 40
per cent.
