January 25, IKjy.
The world. th glori u# world of mind,
The gross material that spurns,
With ardor glowing uml refined,
Its homage pay* to Robert Burns J
And uu this day, his natal day.
More hallow’d bv a hundred years,
Would tribute to his genius pay,
The poet of its sun ilea and tears.
Hi# was no artificial verse,
Cramp’d, aurb’d by arbitrary rule.
For nature was his only nurse.
And genius taught hint not the school.
His heart the gg&hiug fountain won
Os hr—thing thought aud burning word.
And that was the deep-seated cause.
That others'hear is t hoy ever stirr’d.
Strong sympathy ‘s eleclrie chain
Fast bound the poet to hi.s kind ;
’Twa# thought reflecting,thought again
“i'wtt.i mind, as answering unto miud.
He struck a true responsive chord,
So perfectly in unison
With the world's heart, that it douiurr'd
Not to that chiming into one.
One with the earnest ami the true,
The natural, the unconstrain'd.
The bard, thai is lorcvcr ne\v.
The hard, that still has fresh remain'd
Tilt* poet of our verdaut youth.
The poet of our hoary age.
Because bis pen was dipp'd in truth.
That wins the simple and the sage.
An honest, homely, heart fell muse.
Plain-spoken to the honest heart.
Mankind right -minded. needs must choose,
This highest stylo <| ait less art;
{Stamp'd with the genuine signet sign
Os genius, never bought or sold.
That CUOMO but from the source divine.
That ne’er grows dim nor waxes old.
That marks the work of master-hand
With label none can counterfeit,
Makes human ariu wield magic wand,
Makes peasant in king's palace sit;
Draws tribute-praise from every tongue.
Make# on this day. his natal day,
The name of Burns to rank among
The immortal opes that live for aye.
His faults, if not his blase of fumu,
S.y huru out on hi# natal day :
0 thou, without ts silt, east shame
On him—or, weeping, turn away
Aud mourn that genius so bright
Had e'ro been shadow'd by a cloud,
Ami pray God that, like Knot ‘s night,
Mi\v ne’or thy duller spirit shroud.
