PERFORMANCES.
WHIRLWIND'S first race was at Atlanta, fia,
when a three year old : was twin ten By Brown
Hick in three heats, Whirlwind winning the **-
•od heat, the fastest in the race. Ilia second
race was fc tbc Hutchison stakes over the Wash
ington course at Charleston, South Carolina. He
wits again beaten by Brown Rick in the remark
able short time of 3.42. I think him as a race
Imran far all distance-, -uperior not only to Whirl
wind; but to any other bor.-c in America.
Whirlwind s third race the same Spring, was
over the Central course, at Macon, Ga. He there
ran a <wap slakes, two mile heats, which he won
iu two heats, beating Campbell's Wagner Filly,
Morrison's Monarch colt, and Mj. Easley's colt
time 3.57. —3.6K—purw $3,196 —track reported
heavy. On Saturday of the same week, he ran
for the Joeky Club Purse- -mile heats- boat three
in hew. OoL GoMshy’g Colt, Rough and Ready,
balf brother to Brown Dick, and Maj. Lasly’s oh.
Colt by Chieftain, were entered against him; the
race was won by Whirlwind —the first beat by
Rough-ami-Iteudv, tho next three by Whirlwind
uasc JLS3H —1.621% —V-34—the second beat
being faster than the first, it it needles* to say 1
threw off the first. Being in had order, he was
taken from the turf aud turned out till August,
when he -was pot in training for the Xash
villa races. He made his first appearance on
that course in a gweepstak* race of two mile beats
against Invincible and Henry Perrin, the latter a
half brother of Brown Dick, and whose time in a
two mile heat race stands tin parallel led in the
annals of racing, having run a mile iii tWfieeoml
beat in 1.42‘a. Bets were freely made shirt Whirl
wind would he distanced, but *> far from it, be
won the race in two straight beats, distancing
Henry Perrif. in the first—time 3.47—3.67- track
heavy. The same week he ran against little Ar
thur. ul a race of two mile beats, winning in two
straight heats, wad making the best time- aver
made upon that course since it was established
more than forty years sgo—time, 5.46—3.50*2-
Thu week following, he ran another race of two
mile heats, which was over the Walnut course,
again Itcating Invincible: he was afterward* en
tered within the same week, in a three mile heat
race against Perritt and lodine. The rider luting
instructed to run a trailing beat, be lost it; in the
coud beat be took the lead and maintained it; in
the third heat be led Cor the first mile and a half,
hamHn bund, hut owing to the bad condition of
the tnwk caused by a heavy rain, which was at
that time failing, he slipped and fell, as did both
of the other horse-, his rider being hurt by the
fail was taken from the field, and Whirlwind hav
ing ruptured a leader in ‘nc of his legs, ha* since
‘•uen unable to stand at truining. Perritt died
without getting to his stable.
