A Nkw Book by a Boctiikrn Ai tuorksb.
Uki lui by Augusta .1. Kvatis, Mobile.
“Bkvi.ah” U a tale of Southern life, descrip
tive of events and scenes in otic of our (Julf cities.
It is the history of a poor and unfiortuuaUi, but
proud and remarkably gifted orphan, who strug
gles to support herself under, ciivuiuatanccs of
great trial, and finally triumphs by attaining the
most exalted position, and winning an enviable
reputation through her literary labors. Begin
ning at the alphabet of skepticism, as first sug
gested to a childish iuiud, A l>culak's intellectual
and religious life is traced and analysed as she
passed successively through some of the prouii
neut philosophic phases of the uge, Hnd strug
gling all auuaided auiul the morasses of doubt I
and atheism, ultimately rested her spent soul in
the serene, cloudless atmosphere of Revelation.
Rome of the pages contain discussions of the ‘
deepest problems which have so long perplexed
the world, and many of the metaphysical aberru- ,
tious of the age are analysed and discarded. -
Through! the work may ho traced an earnest de- j
sire and effort to lead young ami gifted minds ;
into surer paths than philosophic systems turn
isk, ami to encourage and foster in every soul
germs of the beautiful, which properly devclo|Kd ‘
Would insure pure and hoalthful Austhelies. In
tine, iieuluil is the history of a very gifted aud
ambitious w oman, whose life, early overshadowed
by numerous sorrows, gradually brightened as
she earnestly strove to discharge the duties of her
position, and consecrated her talents to the re
vice of the good, the true and the beautiful.
Just received at J. IV. I'euso’s Hook Store.
tdn Siou*c Hiouu Down
We understand that during the storm last week,
the Gin House of Mr. James Chambers, of Kus
sell County. Ala, was blown down and much dam
age done to the Cotton stored in it. Several no
groes were in the Gin House at the lime, but no ;
injury done them. A mule in the plantation was
killed by the falling of a tree. Many green bolls
of cotton wore blown off their stems ly the tar
ntie wind.
I nloi* Prayer Meetings.
These interesting meetings are now held every
morning at M o’clock and in the evening at 7 o’clock
in the Methodist Church. To-night only is there
an exception. The Baptist Church is substituted
to-night for the Methodist. The place of holding
prayer alternates weekly between the different
Churches. The Ministers and lay Member* of
the different denomination* feel much interested
in these meetings, and believe they will do much
good iu this community. They expect particular
ly professors of religion to Im punctual in their
attendance, aud earnestly invite all to lay asile
for one hour the secular employments of the day
to advance the cause of Cmiiist'h Kingdom.
