I drew my sword, 1 will light for in my native
State, but 1 will not condescend to submit any

of Brig. Gen. Walker using the War Departmout

A VIRUINIA TRAITOR TO lIK ASSIGNED A COMM AND
The Washington Stir of the 22d, sajs:
Col. P. 8. G. C'ooke, Colonel of the United
States Dragoons, who reached Washington from
Utah, on Saturday evening lest, it is understood,
will soon be assigned to an important position in
the Held. One of the few faithful officers from
the South in the present crisis, his general repu
tation is that of being on# of the most accomplish
ed, gallant arid ♦ flbdcnt aoldleg* of the regular
service. With a non and two sons in law hold
ing important commands in the oligarchy's ser
vice,he continues to cling to the stars and stripes
and to the true path of soldierly honor, and
should be cherished accordingly by the Govern
ment. A native of the particular region of
Virginia wherein Major General MoClellan’i ope
rations are to come off, his name in connection
with the Union cause—as a commander of a col
umn of the Union srmy there—would proven
tower of strength to the cause itself. We know
no other officer of the present regular service so
largely connected there, sojwell known person
ally there, or so universally favorably regarded
(hero.
A Navv.— Last Saturday’s New Orleans Delta
understands that 4 a project is In contemplation,
by some of our wealthicet and most public spir
ited itireus, for building a fleet of iron dud
steam ship*, on the latest and most approved
model, to be used exclusively in defending New
Orleans and relieving it of the blockade. Tbe
project as conceived la a brilliant one, and has,
besides, the substantial merit of being entirely
practicable. It is proposed to effect a subscrip
tion of $2,000,(M>0, and with that sum construct
ten steamships of the class indicated, here at
New Orleans and in the Mississippi river. The
docking and ship building faciliUs are unsur
passed anywhere in the world. It is contempla
ted, after building the steamships, to tender them
to the Confederate Government for the war, with
the condition that they Bhall b* employed at the
