From present indications, we feel snla in
saying thai the eotlon crop of the ensuing year
of 1862, will JTill comparatively, far short of
any preced.ng crop that has ever been grown
throughout thi* section Fields that wereonee
white with cotton, are now green with the ap
parent growth of small grain- Our largo and
small farmer* will plant cotton sufficient only
to supply homo demand* and tho demands of
the Confederate Stales, hiul it we shou'd be
blessed with moderate sea*ons, a bountiful
supply of the necessaries of life will be raised, i
and our peop e will iVel independent and ut
ease within themselves. This is the spirit of
the day; may it continue until it drives mad
ness from the .lull and stupid hmin of fanati

Looking at thing* as they ure, and m tho
light of the probable future, there is no reasoa
why the Suit hern planter should put a o/it,iry
cotton secil in the ground next year, except
for the purpose of immuring corn. \Ve have
already enough of the staple on hand to aupply
uuy possible demand in the Confederate Stuie*
for the next three yeai*. and th # must neces

of tins superabundance of cotton there is a Iu

ot many things which the wan,.* of the country
demand and which the plunter could produce
with a certainty of remuneration. Let li in
