than ton thousand hogsheads, of molasses more
than sixty thousand harrelf of the present crop
than wore sold at this date last year. Though
prices ruled low, they ere better tbau they were
in 1853, at our last large crop. But for the
heavy cost and great difficulties of transporta
tion, tbe demand of the Confederate States for
sugar end molasses would be fullv equal to the
product of thia State, and afford handsome pay
ing rates. This feet was greatly doubted somo
time ego.
As the Northwest was in the hsbitjof buying a
large portion of our crop, it was apprehended
that tbe loss of that market would be a serious
damage to our sugar'produci rs. It Is very obvi
ous that this is an error, and that with proper
facilities and means of transportation our
products would oommaud excellent rates and
be entirely consumed within the Confederate
States. Voder the operation of the Northern
tariff, tbe island sugars must advance to rates
which will enable our producers to crowd them
out of the Southern market and to monopolice

was referred the duty of deviling a plan for fill
ing the cisterns with water, beg leave to report
that, upon consultation with tbe Commit toe of
Firemen, they have adopted the plan of filling
I the cisterns from the Howard Factory. Mr. J
K. Brown had kindly consented to run the ma
chinery of his mill at night for tbe purpose, up
on the honorable condition that the city should
pay to the Engineer a reasonable compensation
tor the labor. At the requent of the Chief En
gineer, your Committee authorised the Mayor to
tarnish such of tbeoity hands and carts as were
needed lor the purpose of laying the hose and
taking them up and for the purpose of washing
them after they had been used. This work, la
borious and disagreeable at ell times, would be
very onerous to the fireuisn in their diminish
ed numbers. The committee ,would further re
port that the plan adopted was tried last week
aud the cisterns speedily and easily filled.

shown, says the Lynchburg Republican, anew
Confederate note of the denomination of five
dollere, only just issued, which is one of the
most perfect specimens of workmanship we
have ever seen. The note is tho work of the
Southern Bank Note Company of New Orleans.
The vignette is composed of u group of fe
males, w hile in the distance are seen u woman
bearing in her hande the icslea of Justice, and
a vessel unde* sail indicating that the true
wealth ot the South lies in her commerce. On
the right hand of the note is an accurate like
ness oft he Father of his Country, the immortal
Washington, and on the lull the figure of u
