The rnpitnlint* of Button proposes^ to ct-lnltlislt a linu of ocean steamer* running direct between that port nutl lfavro, •Southampton nnd Antwerp, partly with the view of securing to that city some of the commercial advantages which New York has derived ft out her European lines of steamers which hare grown up during the lunt twenty years. In commending this enterprise to the public, tho Post gives the following facts relative to existing lines of European stoamers: Tho Ctmnrd Company start ed with n capital for four steamers only— out of their accruing prolils they have built up a licet of twenty-four steamers, fifteen between Englumf and the United Hinton, five in the Mediterranean and four in tho French service, besides declar ing largo annual dividends. Hir .Samuel Cunartl was without means ut its com mencement, but in twenty years thereaf ter, at his denlh, his fortune was doclnred to be $4,000,000, this being his portion only of the profits of that lino. Tito large fleet of fifteen steamers of tho In man lino has been built up within ten years out of tho capital paid in for six steamers only', besides tlio annual divi dends paid to tho shareholders. Every moralist, nnd, in fact, every close observer, knows that the proportion of shiftless, good-for-nothing young men has largely increased within tho last few yours, parlieuhnly in this and othor hu ge cities, but ihnfcu who discuR* tho subject seem to bo nt a Iofh for tho true explana tion In our judgment tho question is one of very easy solution. Wo attrib ute it to the spirit of fnlso prido which induces parents to put their boys in stores nnd otlieos rather than npproatico thorn to good truth's. Tn this city, at tho present time morchanls, bnnkera, insu rance men, nud others of this class, are overrun, with applications Irom parents who want situations for their boys; but Muinufauttircrs find it almost impossible to got apprentices. It was not so in for mer limes. Fifty yours ago—much iator, in foot—pin outs generally regard ed a trade us Homuthiug essential in the preparation of their boys for tho battle of life. Even men w hoso circumstances did not require them to tlo manual work, nmdo it n point to hnvo their boys lenru trades, in order to givo them practical idons about business, to make tlicfh in dustrious. nnd also to furnish them some thing to full hack upon in case of adver sity. How is it now ? Mechanics and laboring men, even, have too generally imbibed tho iiluit that they ought to plnuo their boys a peg above the drudgery of luuuunl Iff bur. They sown to think that they are not doing justice to thorn unless they place thorn in positions whore they nun wear "hobby" clothes and keep their hands white. There never was a greater mistake. Look at tho lending inon of our country, from tho President down, nnd you will sec that, ns a rule, it is the men who leant trades in their youth who have bocomo tho foremost in every brunch of progress nnd enterprise. Tho boy who is placed in a store or of fice usually gets his head full 'of vanity uud self-conceit before ho has been long in his position. Jlo acquires an inordi- unto lovo of drosi, nnd soon becomes so puffed up in his own estimation that practical common sense can find no lodg ment in his bruin, llisnimis to dross us well and live as high its those with whom he comes in contact, and he is quite likely to go from habits of extrava gance to habits ol dissipation. Wo «l«> not wish to bo understood assayingtbnt ibis in tbo road winch all boys travel who tlo not lourn trades. Wo simply ray that such is tho tendency, and il requires a boy of good mind, fot lifted by good, enriy training, to rosit-t tho temptation. The boy who in put to a trade, on the other hand, gives vanity but little chance to get hold of him. llo acquire;, pracli cal ideas about buMnoss> ; his habits urn m added by frugality and economy, and ho lays the foundation of a good, useful nnd industrious citixuu. The idea that manual labor is not "respectable,” is ono of the most absurd things in this age of ubaiirditics. No person with a thimble full of brains will tny anything of the kind, and those rilly creatures who do ssy so are generally the degenerate sons of hard-working mechanics. Every boy whether rich or poor, high or low, ought to learn a trade not that ho should al ways work at it, but tlmt lie may have it ns reserve capital, together with its inllu- once in forming his character.—N F. Postal Beuvick in TO* South.—The Poit Oflioo report announces that while the ncrvico io the eleven seceded Btates fell largoly in nrreura before tho war, in* tho last year it has netted $200;000 prof it to the Government. This fact is sus- ccptiblo of very onsy explanation. Be fore tho war tho service was complete. Every neighborhood was supplied with mail, matter—frequently ut loss to tho Department. Now tho country is not hulf-served. All the little neighborhood post offices have ceased to exist, and many important villngcs are still without n mail. raantatcB t. coxaxt. ALraan r. to t wo.
