Christmas Nlw Year.- A merry Christmas
h*« again te en numbered with the many fleeting
pleasures of the past. Yrs, our last fat turkey
has been eervrd—tlie last egg broken In the
flowing bowl - our left Gre cracker exhausted;
and now we rubsi/lc Into our easy chair, with the
bright glow of our cheerful Arc, nud tbc radian
unite of loved ones, which almost makes us for
get that the ‘-joys we've tasted may never re
turn.”
The old year is laying his frozen locks upon
the bosom of the cheerful Christmas, whilst the
dissolving wreathes of cbrystsl gems weep his
Anal farewell. Indeed, nature seems to havo
baen anxious to do special honor to the dying
year! For three consecutive daye, within tint
last week, we have lived in on encbauled land.
Not all her garniture of flow* ra in summer, conld
compare with the beauteous sheen of her winter
sprays, bung from each sprig and tree by her
frosty breath. Not in a dainty, partial mood
were her pearly treasures strewn, but orcr the
moor and in the glen, each russet leaf and spire
of grass—each sturdy oak and waving plus
glow'd beneath her magic wand.
But the glorious vision h as departed, and many
n so late jewelled tree has paid a forfeit for its
brightness, in the fallen limbs striekun from Us
side. When spring returns to deck her bowers,
(he'll wail the injured, loved and lait; and the
song of birds and the blnab of flowers, will al'.k e
pay sad homage to departed beauty.
Thu* to the past we look with a sigh, whilst
hope twines her fragrant henrt-teaves for tho fu

Important Decision--Tho Express,

of an important decision recently render
ed in Virginia :
Tho opinion of the District Court of
Appeals, in tho case Tucker «. Watson,
McGill & Co., and the sanio w. Brodnnx
& Lyon, published in full in tho Express
of yesterday, is of no little Importance to
Southern debtors ngninst the claims of
Northern creditors. Thu point establish
ed by tho decision is that during tho war
between the United States and Confeder
ate States, all interest on tho indebted
ness of either party, not being recovera
ble ns it accumulated, cannot bo legally
claimed now that tho war is over. Ah.the
indebtedness of Southern to Northern
partio* is known tu have bocn very con
siderable nt tbo commencement of hostili
ties, thci tloet 'of this decision will bo to

are no more honorable men iu the world
than Iho merchants of tho Bouth. Had
they not buun ruined by tho war, wo
believe they would, with individual oxocp-
t our, perhaps, havo paid both principal

prostrate condition tbo Northern mer
chants havo treated them not only with
leniency, but with tho greatest liberality.
Instead of oppressing them, they have
boon willing to compound on the turms
proposed by tho Southern creditor, nnd
t>veil to open liberal dealings, nnd their
forbearance, under tho present circum
stances, cannot bo too highly commend
ed.
