VALEDICTORY.
TV the ReaJen of the Appeal:
For the last rnontb I huVo done noth
ing for thin paper ; and believing that
my profession lias prior claims upon my
tiino and energies, and that its increa*.
ing labors ore wholly inconsi*tcnt with
the dmchnrgoof my duties ns Associate
Editor,•! have after long deliberation,
reluctantly determined to yield my pluco
to Col. H. It. Jones, whoso high order
of talents nnd scholarship, in my* judge,
merit, fully qualify him for tho duties up
on which ho is about to enter.
Tho .pupor still lias my best wishes
and will receive rny cordial aid nnd sup
port, and I commend it to tho public n»
an enterprise in which all nro interested.
Mr. Sawtbll, the publisher, lias rny full
confidence, nnd I tako pleasure in bear
ing rny unqualified testimony to his en
ergy and fitness for tho duties devolving
upon him.
In parting with tho accomplished gen.
tlemen who havo been associated with
rno, it is due to tho public to any, that
nothing has occurred to mar our mutual
confidence and eel corn, but that ibe
friendship lias up to this moment, and 1
doubt not will, continuo to grow with its
ago. Hkiuieut Fielder.
Wo cannot lot tho moment of parting
with our esteemed associuto pass with
out expressing our rogrot nt his loss in
the editorial conduct of tliis paper.
Col Fielder's facile and elegant uso
of tho pun, discriminating judgement,
nnd firm sociul qualities, havo made our
rotations most pleasant, nnd contributed
largely to tho character nnd interest of
tho pnpor. Ho is a sound, energetic law-
year, and wo predict for him a success
ful career in his profession. Tho gap
made by his retiring, will bo scon, isjili-
od by Col. 11. H. Jones. We nre pleas
ed with this opportunity or apprising our
readers that the Appeal bus thus soourod
a public spirited and accomplished gon-
tlomnn. Henceforth its career will bo
onward and upward till it tnkos rank
among tho very first weeklies of tho
country. If an appreciating public will
givo us their patronage tho Appeal will
bocoino n household word.
8ALUTAT0RY.
Tho undersigned in assuming tho du
ties nnd vnonnt chuii of his giftod and
accomplished predecessor, would earn
estly bespeak tho kindnoss and indul
gence of a generous public.
It is with unfeigned diffidence Hint in
comtnon with his able confreres, ho ad
dresses himself to the task of shaping
nnd in a manner directing tho opinions
nud interests, both political and moral,
of an intelligent community. Tho respon
sibility is great nnd the duty arduous;
Ho enters upon his enreor however
pledged to tho support of uo individual,
eliquo, or faction ; nor shall he ever "bend
tho plinnt hinge* of tho knee," to "pow
ers or principalities," for tho sake of pat
ronngo or tho acquisition of filthy !ucro.
In his hands, ho trusts tho indupond-
onco of tho press, and its vast power to
nchiovo good, will riovur bo prostituted
to base purposes nnd unholy onds.
A law abiding citizen, lie shall always
counsel obodionce to tho gotorimicnt
nnd tho just discharge of every public
obligation ; still, no pusillanimous fear
will over deter him from attacking nnd
exposing corruption in high places, or re
sisting any inroad upon tho rights nnd
privileges of tho pooplo. Ilia motto ahull
bo, toleration in religion, independence
upon political subjects, nnd u due nnd
courteous regard for tho sentiments nnd
opinions of tdl mankind.
In conclusion ho feels greatly cheered
and oncourngod, Hint tho assistance nnd
services of his two eminent nnd excellent
associates will be still vouchsafed to him.
•Surely in such hand*, tho Cuthbort Ap
peal must become a power in tho land.
Upon tho head of tho retiring editor, Col.
Fielder, may God’s benison rest. A
gentleman, "mupeur tain reproehe," nnd
with tho finest intellect nnd legal attain
ments, wo predict for him n bright ca
reer of uiefulocRs and honor. So mote
it bo. Henry U. Jones.

Distributions.—Wo would call atten
tion to the opiqion of ono of the leading
papers of Canada on this subject:
Most of our renders havo no doubt
rend some of the numerous advertise
ments of Gift Entoprises, Gift Concerts,
•tc.Jwhich appear from tiino to time in the
public prims, offering most tempting
bargains to those who will patronize
them. In moot ennenthese nro genuine
humbugs. Hut there ore a few respec
table firms who do business in tide man
ner, nnd they do it ns a means of increas
ing their wholesale business, and not to
iiinko money. From such firms, it is
truo, handsome and valuable article.* nro
procured fur a very small sum, and what
is more important, no ono is ever cheat
ed. Evcy person gets good vuluo fur
his dullnr ; because, us wo havo stated, it
is intented to net ns an .advertisement to
incrcaso their ordinary business.
Wo have seen numbers of prizes sent
out in this way by Bliormnn, Watson &
Company, of Nn*sua Street, N. Y.,nnd
there is no doubt Uint some of the arti
cles nro worth eight to ten times tho mon
ey paid for them, while wo havo not seen
or heard of a singlo article which was
not fully worth tho dollar which it cost.
But this i* only one of the exceptions of
thin rule, for as a general thing tho par
ties engaged hi this business nre nothing
but clever swindlers.—Saturday Header,
Montreal, ('. A'., Jan. 18,. 1868.
