Bainib Tkstixo.—The Georgia Rail

Oconee was tested lust Thu sduy in tho

says of it:
Tho first experiment was to place
three locomotives nnd n passenger train
on the bridga, the whole remaining there
for thirty minutes dtiring which tiino on
nr ist from Augusta, who wan at a dis
tance witlihia .instrument, took a lull
viuw of tho whole scene.
The accend lest was ono engine, and
three car* hcuvlilv loaded with Iron tho
whole weighing 1100,00(1 .pounds. Those
were placed tipofi ono span, nnd permit
ted to remnin Ibr ten or twenty minutes.
Tho third text consisted of threo en

The fourth and Inst tost tvaa tho run

When we state that in no instance did
tho above almost mountain weight force
tho bridge below u liomoutal lino, it will
bo seen how grand n triumph in mechan
ism Imn tho "Fink Iron .Suspension
Bridge” proved to lie, reflecting alike
credit upon the builders nnd the accom
plished eng near, Dr. J. L. Grant, under
whpso immediate supervision it was
erected. Tho whole length of tho bridge
ia 618 feet, nnd its weight 81H,000
pounds, being only about half a* heavy
as the How 'Truss Bridge. Its finish is
of an nniMunlly neat character, while it*
durability and uhvupncM arc tho next
important feature* to tho immense
weight it lift* so fully dcmonstnitud may
bo safely placed upon it. By gentle
men of uekoowlmlgcd ability in railroad
architecture. Col. Wndluy, Col. I<. 1*.
Grant and M«j. J. F. Copper, who were
present, and gave tho Oconee Bridge n
critical examination, it wna pronounced
beautiful in symmetry und finish, and
fully cquul to oven greater |>oworn of
ondaranoo than its builders claim for it.

what did the rcl-ola or 1 SO I rebel ? "The

stitution ?" Tliut is the question.
If they had been able to foresee—and
they say they did—Hint tho Union was
to bo what tho Radieul* now mean, by
what word, can a man ho found so dis
honest ns to deny that it wna the! r duty to
get out of it ut all snerifiuos, and with all
)K)*aililo Imste ? A plan who would sub
mit to such a slavery an tho Radical
"Union" would bo, without a fight, is
unworthy the buurd on his face. But
wo all know very well thut no such "Un
ion'' was In nrospoot, though the dema
gogue* inuou it so uppenr to ilia imagin
ation* of the Southern masses—those
from tho North, by threatening it, and
quoting tho throats to tho people. But
what right has a Radical to blame a reb
«1 ? If iho rubul wuh wrong, it must
have been for attacking tlio Union. But
to attack tho Radical Union would have
boon light Roes nay Undioul deny it ?
On the other hand, if tho rebel was
wrong in breaking the Union the Radicals
must bo more wrong in abolishing the true
Union, and it mast follow, that if one wus
a traitor, llm other is a greater traitor.

prevails in many portions of the South.
The following extract from a private let

the great destitution to which the peo

"Oh I what horrors of famine will bo

All are working a* hard n* they cuu to

DrsTittBrnoVs.—Wo would rail atten
tion to the opinion of ono ol the leading
per* of Canada on this subject:
lost of our readers have no doubt
rend sorao of the numerous advertise
ment* of Gift Entuprise*, (»i t Concerts,
etc- which appear from time to time in tho
public prints, otlering moit tempting
bargains to those who will pntronixe
them. In most eases there are genuine
humbugs. But thero arc a few respec
table films who do business in thi* man-
nor, and they do it a* u ircnns ofinrrens-
ing their w holesale business, uni not to
make money. From such firms, it is
true, liundsomo and vultiublo articles are
procured for a very small sum, ami what
is more important, ao one is ever cheat
ed. Evey person gets good value f<*r
hi* dollar ; because, as we have slated, it
i* intonted to act a* an advertisement to
increase their ordinary business.
We have seen number* of print sent
out in thi* way by Sherman, Watson &
Company, of Nassu.i Street, N. V., and
there i» no doubt that some of tho arti
cles nre worth eight to ten time* tho mon
ey paid for them, while we havo not seen
or heard of a single article which was
not fully worth tho dollar which it cost.
But this i* only one of the exceptions ol
thi* rule, for n* a general thing the par
ties engaged in this business are nothing
