Wc left Cuthbert on Friday morning,

under charge of Mr. Giles, the portly
nnd good natured conductor. The
track was in excellent order, nnd noth

thriving town of Dawson, wo paused
for breakfast at Smithville. Here,
owing • to tho tnngical influence of com
petition, tho traveler may ho regaled with

“chicken fixings," hot cakes, cuffoo and
other etceteras. Tho day was fiery hot,

This beautiful city is wd! styled the
forest city of tho South, with its broad
streets almost arched over with mngnifi-
cent tdiado trees, its lovely squares car
peted with tho softent green, nnd the
numerous and tasty flower gardens,
^stocked with tho rarest plants nnd exot
ics, which meet the eye on every side.
The perfectly level plateau upon whidt
the city is built, and tho mathematical
regularity of its streets also, enhance
tho beauty or its appearance. Another
attractive feature of the city, is the in
finite variety displayed in the stylo and
architecture of its private nnd public
edifices. The sameness which is so tiro,
somo in Augusta and Philadelphia is ut
terly wunting hero, and stores nnd shops
are more genora’.ly distributed. This
imparts constant life and bustle to a
lurgo portion of tho city. In commerce,
ids, with that ^terpriso which is the
attribute of tho Yankeo, is giving now
ideas nnd increased energy to our own
citizens. And last but not lo.Tst, the
virtue and efficiency of advert Uiny, is be
ginning to bo realized by tlm btlfliness
men of tho city, who find their prosperi
ty greatly advanced by tho judicious
nnd liberal tiso of printer's ink. As
this opinion gains ground, tnny wo not
hope that tho ancient city or Oglethorpo
will yet ’uilininnto to tho vast proportions
and importance, her commanding situa
tion should justly outitlo her to assume ?
From our brethren of tbo News &
Herald, nnd tho sprightly Advertiser,
wc received, a wjirm grootingnnd many
courtesies. Richly do they both de
serve tho liberal patronage bestowed by
nu appreciative and admiring public.
Right proud shall wo bo when oconsion
offers, to welcome any, or all of them to
our own lovely little city. No Journals
in the Stato nro more wife awake aud
ably conducted than those.
In politics, a dead calm nnd tho stolid
indifference of despair seems to reign
The darbies however nro jubilant, nnd
marshalled by the radical element which
is so l ife in this region, continue to pour
in and crowd around tho registry office*,
NVesnw about 50 formed in two ranks,
nnd with upli.'tcd right hands sworn,
and invested with citizenship, in one
hatch. FnlstnfFs ragged regiment were
n splendid nrrny, in comparison will

Hhirtlcsp, with tattered unmentionables,
und overpowotihg mat, there they
stood, eager to vote, when to suvo them
selves from perdition, not one of tlmJr
number cot.Id liavo spell tho word or

poorest description of rice field hands,
who nrc the mouncst and most de
graded of their rnce After much ado,
tho company was formed in an arc of
u circle, meant for n straight lino, nnd
drilled awhile to learn them which were
their right hands. Then ns tho roll was
called, each was required to answer,
here. Two or three essayed to do so,
but finally ovory fellow responded with
oxtremo unction sue—ns his nrtmo was
ronched in turn. One of the Registrars
then told thorn they wero froo to vote, but
not free to it cal any more, that when
they wanted hoy to oat with their homi
ny, they could no longer catch one, nnd
say no harm to take Horn hog. If they
did so now, thoy would.be sent to tho
penitentiary. To do justice to the who’e
scene, would havo required a Hogarth
nnd Major Jones himself.
But wo must concludo tlieso hnsty
