tbc "Southern Cultivator,” on tho Pine
Straw question, having nttrnotod my at-
tontion, I will gtvo a piece of my own
uxporienco in tho mutter-—leaving otli-
era to difputu about tho thoory. In
lb6U, I onipluyed uh manager on my
Htnull plantation nn experienced farmer,
uh well ns a man of much practical
pence. In our contract, it was stipula
ted that I watt to furnia , i liandu and
transportation to manure bin potato
pntcli with pine straw, and tho idea be
ing a novel ono to tno, l watched his
proceedings with hoido interest. Tho
s|>ot selected was a portion of n field
of poor gravelly brownish clay soil,
which hud hcon in cultivation longcr
than ho or I hud been living. Tho
straw used was from thu short leaf or
"old field” pino—no other kind growing
on my pluco. Well, tho potato patch
was covered with this, in January or
February, to the depth of tbreo to six
inches, and tho land (previously broken)
••turned over.” No other immuro was
applied. On my mvn patch I put a
bountiful supply of cow-pen inauuie—
thu land being fresher und butter than
his. The culture was tho sumo, llis
yield ot potatoes wus at least twenty
live per cent, bettor than mine. In tho
fall the whole field was sown in oats,
and from tho timo they came up until
they woro harvested, tho difference be
tween those in tho "potato patch” and
the rest of the field, was perceptible ot
the distunce of one to three bund ed
yards—the former having much the
stinngcr and more healthy npjtenranco,
and the yield was proportionately better.
Next year the effects of tho Fine Straw
were strikingly observable in the corn,
ns witnessed by several neighbors.—
And about that time wo "peaceubly se
ceded," I went to the wur, and don’t
know what my pine straw potato patch
did afterwords. That's all.— E. R. L

ing him in rucIi a position, that his corpeo
would full in scavenger's offul, they turn
ed his back to the troops and to tho
people, and literally tore the chest of tho
giant soldier of Neuvn Loon into a
sieve. Not satisfied with his death, tho
sorgonntof tho guard loaded a musket,
placed it to his forohead, fired his piece,
and none among the living could hnvo
recognized tho bravo old Vidnurn, of

Praying fur u Husband.
A correspondent of tho Hochello (Illi

that placo. T. ough tho story is consid
erably older than tho correspondent, it
is worth reading:
A young lady heard that if she wotlltj
go out three consecutive nights Knit
pray, tho Lord would toll her whom she
would marry. Now it bnppei.od that
her father had n young man in his em
ploy who hud considerable wit nnd good
humor about him. Ono evening ho wilri

heard some ono praying something liko
this: "Oh, Lord, who will I marry?”
The idea popped into Doyle’s Glint being

would hnvo a little sport nt her expense.
Bo ho spoke in n changed voice and said.
"Doyle.” "No, Lord, not Doyle ” crtotf
thu astonished young lady. "YeR. Dtfjre
or no one,” again soutt led from tno treo
top in n sober, hollow voice. 8ho arose
and entered tho houso, resolved to try
agnin tlie next ovening.
Of course Doyle did not wish to spoil
tho fun, nnd so tho next evening fotfrrff
him scutod in tho treo top. Hu did not
have long to wuit before tho yotingjm*
band seeker came nnd commenced pray

preceding evening, nnd received th#
same answer. Tho next cvenlt^f, eiso,
found her under tho tree pleading to
know liur future husliund's name, and
again she heard answer, "Doyle or no

money." He took that for C pretty good
hint, nnd bought a suit of now elothoa.
In a short timo ho offored his heart and
hand, and wns accepted. After their
marriage he told hor how hor prayers

Cotton Hai.es.—As cotton costs somc-

would think that thu primitive freshness

at least lesson its deadliuess. Out there

Tits Negro in East TenNMSXX,—A
letter from Bristol, East Tennesseo says:
Tlie cojjduot nn«l duplicity of tho llnd-

late election, is fast developing itself.—
As tin evidenoo of this, so soon ns tho
election was over, tiio Tax Assessor
commenced operations—looking at tho
small change left after paying the expen
ses of tho loyal league. To-dny pnpors
were sent to the different magistrates to
cnrntnenco work at once. The negroes
all seem startled, as they had never been
lectured on taxation, but confiscation.—
