attracting so much attention.
Tho country is houlthy, and almundn

which chocolate is obtained, is tho most

The cost of clearing land is from 10

A Talc of Awful Outrage.
One tlio most shocking and horrible
events ever known to history occurred
last week in Maryland, by which the
daughter of ono of tho most prominent
nnd wealthy citizens of Cumberland coun
ty has been reduced to a condition a thou
sand times worse than dual .
Mr. Charles Deane, a resident of Bra
dy’s Mills, on the Baltimore and Ohio
railroad* a gentleman of education, and
possessor of (ho largo iiiiH ami other
property in tho village, had an only
daughter, named Bessie, u young lady
quite seventeen, possessed of refinement
and cveiy virtuoof accomplishment which
nature could give or money procure.—
She had a form of exquisite symmetry
und grace, and a rare vuico which culti
vation hail trained to produce the most
perfect harmony; she was indeed a
charming singqr, and a hello of the coun-
try.
For some months pnzt there has been
prowling around Brady's Mills a most
ogerish looking mulatto,supposed to liuvo
formerly been tho slave of a brother of
Mr Duane, living in Georgia
This monster hus lived in a filthy but
nt tlio foot of Brady’s mountains, with
mi old woman, who seemed to Ihj mis
tress, mother mid liouMkeepetfulfln ono.
No ono know his name, but by tlio wags

Scrunch.
On Monday,(lie ltd of September, Miss
Bcst-io being at home, having left school
at Baltimore, where she was attending,
on account of tho serious illness of her
mother, went, unaccompanied, to spend
tho afternoon with u neighbor, some dis
tance away, and returning in the early
evening around tho mountain, >% sudden j

Alas ! poor child ; no sooner bad the

ing screams and struggles, and in tho

mind can conceive or man is capable.—
lie then drugged her insensible form
out of the hut. The cool air revived
her, and nguin her lips uttered a shrill
cry, when thiH savage beast, in human
shape, standing upon her prostrate form,
with tho insane idea of pulling it out of
her power to tell of the crime, crushed
open hor mouth with tlio heel of his boot
mid with his hyena claws lie tore tlio
poor gill’s tongue from ter throat. A
small boy, driving the cows in tho vicin
ity, hearing tho screams, gave tho alarm;
but before help bad arrived tlio fiend
had fled. The excruciating torture of
tlio delicate sufferer, nnd the frantic
anguish of tlio pnrents, no imagina
tion can conceivo. tSIio is said to be in
a dying condition—mortification having
set in, mid her invalid mother cun no

Tho Federal Union thinks tho members
of tho Convention will have a slow time
of it in getting their pay. It says :
It is now understood that tho Pope
Convention, if held nt all, will ho held on
credit. But who shall pay for it at last
is the Question ? A large majority of
the white men do not want a Conven
tion, nnd it would bo contrary to every
principle of justice nnd common sense
for rnen to bo compelled to pay for what
they do not want. The Convention is
not held lor tho benefit of the people of
Georgia, but lor tlio benefit of snrno
two or tlirco Radical candidates for the
Presidency.
That is tho solo object nnd aim ol tho
Convention, nnd shall tho people of Geor

or Colfax or Benj. Butler, President 7
Wo think not. Those who veto for lliu

But this is a bogus concern ordered
by u Congress, where Georgia had no
representatives, which Imd no legal
right to order a Convention in Georgia,
and we predict if ii bogus Convention is
held, mid the members attempt to tax
the nooplo of Georgia to pay them for
services which they did not want, that
tho people will reject nnd repudiate the
whole concern, and tho members who
forced themselves upon the people will
have to pay tlio piper. This would bj
