Wo offer no apology to our reader*
for inserting a larga portion of tlio
charge of Judge Berrien to the grand
jury of Chatham county, Ga., in tho
April term of tho Rupcrior Court for
1816. Wo extract it from a copy of
Gw MiHcdgevillc Goorgia Journal, bear

the paper* of tho editor'* father. It
will lie aeon that tliare ia nothing now
tinder the sun, and legal opinions and
deaisiofM ran in similar channel* from
generation to generation. This voice
front the grove of one of Georgia’* moat
illustrious sons, will alied now light upon
this vexed subject, and bo read with
avidity by hi* admirer* and tho whole
liar of Geoigia. Tho argument and
charge, ia based upon tho unconstitution-
nlity of tho "alleviating law” passed by
tho Dcgislutnro, immediately after tho
clooa of tho lust war with Great Britain.
It ia ccuchod in the usual luminous
and felicitous stylo of the great Berrien.

The Convention.
Tho Convention aoon to assemble,
thanks to the apathy mid. unfortunate
policy of our own pouple, will uttorly
fail to represent the sentiments, intelli
gence, and capital of the Btato. Its
members arc a mongrel body composed
of negroes, mulattoea, und* imported per
sons who had neither charnctor nor re
spectability at home, with u sprinkling
only of able and good mon, who wo are
loth to believe will oid in the consumma
tion of their country's ruin »nd degra
dation. Tho election of the Conserva
tive candidates in the District, embrac
ing the counties of Buker, Early and
Calhoun, in the face of an overwhelming
majority of colored voters, and mainly
by the ballots of tho negroes themselves,
conclusively p.ovos that even tho nega
tive influence of the whites who gener
ally abstained from voting, when exert-
od aright, waa very potent in its results.
Wo believe that despite tbo gerry
mandering of Gon. Pope, nnd the whole
sale disfrunchisoincnt of thousands of
our citixens, the Convention with proper
effort might hnvo boon controlled by tho
good men and true, of the land. Re-
grots nro vain nnd unprofitable howe ver,
and it only remain* for us to organise
and be in rtadineaa to defeat nny action
which may compromise tho interest* ami
welfare of lli« while population ol the
Stuto.
That tho Convention is an illegal as
semblage, ordered und convoked with
out the shadow of right, by an unscru
pulous faction, who temporarily control
(ho government, no student of constitu
tional Jnw can deny. That we nro pow
erless to arrest its sittings, and for the
present must submit to its mandates is
equally truo. As well attempt to resist
tlio lellre de earful ol Gen. Pope which
consigns you to prison, or the introduc
tion of the negro into the jury-box. Tho
bayonet is tho convincing argument In
tho premises.
So then, na the fates havo decreed
that wo must continuo to remain for n
seuson under radical vnssalago, let us
nwuit tho iaauo of ovonts with becoming
patience und fortitude, and not provoke
our onotnioB to increased severity by
prmnnturo opposition. For this reason
wo think the Maooa Connorvativo Con
vention should confine itself to the mere
duty of organising thoroughly, a paity
in opposition to the radicals, and at
tempt no high bunded or overt act of
nny kind.
Passionate utterances and nnothemas
torn! only to infiair.e the publio mind,
and will infallibly drive the Convention
to groutcr extremes, and furnish n pre
text and clonk (if nny were Incking),
to the Btiukooaniid Jacksons of that
body, to exhaust their devilish inge
nuity in devising new schemes of In
iquity and oppression. Already tho
Alubuma abomination has set them
an example, which for infamy aod atroc
ity, is without a parallel in tho world’s
history. If wo knew that Gan. Pope
would allow * reasonable time to elapse,
before submitting tho bantling of the
Convention for ratification, it would be
ovon advisable to refrain from nny notion
at all, until our enemies hud developed
their purposes and laid bnro their pluns.
An organisation to tako effort in certain
