The Dead Restored to
A week or two ago tho wife of
V;*ry respectable mechanic residing
Twelfth street, in this city, died after a
short illnees, and the usual arragements
were made for the liineral aerviccs.—
One of the city undertakers, at the re
quest of the husband, provided a very
hunditome coffin for the demised, into
which the lifcieae remuine were placed,
and they were |>erniitted to remain in a
room. During the ensuing night, how-
over, one of the watcher#, who had
heard and read of report* of cases u[

with a ourtosity in the premiacs, decided
to ascertain lor himself whether there
wae any probability of truth in auch re

and having satisfied herself that she was
really alone with the corpee, she obtain
ed n small looking-glass und bid it up
on the face of the deceased. To her
great surprise there appeared evidences
of breathings upon tho face of the gluai,
end she resolved, for fear of deceptions
to muko another test with another glass.
The operation being repented, the same
signs wore manii'mited, and she revealed
her discoveries to tit# other watchers;
each in turn tried the glass, and each
had the satisfaction of observing pre
cisely what the first did. Of course in
(lie morning the whole affair was die-
cussed with the fnmily of the deceased,
and it then oecured that a long time ago
a young man, n member of tho womun's
family, hud died, and previous to the
burial the corpse bad nctuuJIy rolled ovi-r
upon one side, snowed signs of life, and
the case was declared to linvo been one
of suspended animation by the best med

Under all these circumstances it wae hy
the husband deemed advisable to defer
the funeral mnemonics, and accordingly
nolioo was given that the interment
would not take plnco at tho time pro

in the coffin several days, two upon the
fifth day after tho eupposed death, signs
of life were so numerous that tho body
was removed to a bod. where it gradu
