Somewhere in thn south of F.mUikJ
tbsro lived very reesntiy * fion, band*
■emo younjf man, standing full da foot
high, whose nnme 1 decline Ur mention
•—a baronet, and rich in the bargain. It
appears that for eotno time nnet he has
had a young lady living with him in the
capacity of boneekoeper, bnt alia lately
left bar situation with the intention of
getting married to a young man trim,
it wae presumed, bod succeeded 1U win*
ning her maiden offeclionr. Her motlier
resided at the pleasant village of Perk*
rooke, in Harnpehfro, end thither she
went, of oqprse, pro tern, pending the
groat change, llor Leer bappenad to
bo at tho old lady's honse one day, whilst
thoy were all engaged <0 discussing the
rosy future, *n currlngo might Have been
seah/MO. P. R. James would have
■aid, driving rapidly thro* the village,
and containing the baron 'first above
mentioned.’ In abort, stopped' at the
cottage, the baronet alighted, and te
tlio aatoniahmimi of all prewmt, offered
his band and heart to his former houe*
keeper, tbore and then. Tbev wore all
taken aback for a time, bat finally the
intended bridegroom explained that
Carolina wna engaged to him, and that
bo bad no intention of giving- her up.-—
Tho baronet then suggested that tbe la*
dv should choost between them. Him
did so, end loyally chose her betrothed
end rejected the titled candidate.
The latter then indulged (n a good
deal of wild transcendental, if not abso
lutely profane language; but at last find
ing it no use appouliug to his rival’s feel
ings, be tried ‘bribery and corruption/
Ho offered his oponent a check for £2,*
000 to abandon llm field in hia favor.—
But it waa ‘no go'— ne unit. His rivul
—royal, chivalrous, devoted, incorrupti
ble —rejected the proffer with indignant
scorn.
'Two thousand jiounds I No not for
ton I’ said he.
Aftor thfl decided repals® the baro
net want home. Many under tho cir
cumstances would have consider*! the
enso hopeless; but not so with our he
ro, who probably had heard somebody
eeV that 'faint boort never Wrm (sir Indy.'
Tho next day lie managed to get anoth
er interview with hie rival, when ho
again offered a large anm of money, ftft
well as all tho property he ownod In the
neighborhood, if ho would withdraw hia
pretensions. Htill tho loyal lover ro*
fused to sell Ids love for gold ; ami so.
the baronet's third effort proved futile.
But next be approached the mother
of bis charmer, A long interview en
sued, at which it ia not difficult to pro*
suine that a liberal premium was offered
for maternal influence. Tho denoument
vindicates tho wisdom of this plan of at
tack. On the following day tho baronot
and tho young lady stepped into a car-
nidi wae driven to a neighbor
ing church, nod when they returned
thoy were man and wifo.
Of course this romantic incident le
made the aubjout of considerable remark.
Old, crusty baohelorn oltuoklo and quote
Byron. But the most gallant and chari
table explanation is, that tho baronot
had booQ the lady's first love, and that
aho only constated to marry her other
lover In despair of scouring tho man of
her choice.

Farmers wire keep oowa for milk, and
have tried cabbage*, ero pliwed with
the results. They furnish at a email
cost, o very large einoont of fodder at a
time when the paetirres fail. They are
Mgftly relished by oowe, secure a large
flow of milk, and if fed hot once a day,
immediately after the morning milking,
they Impart no unpleasant teste to (he
mine. Either old ground or fresh sod
may be taken, and it should be manured
very liborally. We have succedfled well
by plonimg eabboges as a succession
crop botweeir rows of early potatoes,
sotting the plants the last of June or
first of Jaly, and digging the potatoes
from tho 4th to tbe 30th of tbe latter
month. In this cose, nnper-pboephate
of lime, bone duet, or some consentrated
fertilizer should be applied as soon as
the plants are fairly established. If no
other crop is attempted, plow with a
double Michigan plow, and manure
thoroughly early in the season. Keep
tbw weeds down with tbe barrow until
Jnm r Md at any time, from June 1st to
Jul/ Ifitbveef out the plant*, three feet
apart, and two feet in the row. Six or

the acre. The transplanting and culti
vating can all be done by boys, costing
not mure than one half as much 1 a* the
labor of men. If the cultivator be start

weeks before tho plants ore wanted.
An Empress Floors.—Eugenio was
recently witnessing a military reviow at
Rennos, walking about the field, curious,
questioning, amused and careless, when,
it having rained in tho morning, nil at
once, great emotion I Hof Majesty'* foot
•lipped on tho wot grass, and there she
was laughing heartily at a slight fall, al
though no one nroand her dared to
tinilo. She tried to riso, tho ground
slipped away under her little foot. A
general of artillery and commander of
chasseurs advanced to Iter ossistnnoo,
moved bv tbo sums desire, yet kept
back by tbe same fear ; the respect due
to the first lady of tho land paralyzed
their good will, and they remained
standing, bowing and liealtating, not
daring to touch tholr sovereign, who
was still laughing merrily. A minuto
in a similar case is a century. Then, a
foot aoldler, who waa holding nn officer'. 1 *
horse at eomo little distance, threw tho
bridle to a comrade, and bravely ap-
proachod, one hand doing the military
salute and tbe other stretched towards
the Empress with ougaging frankness ;
" Ma Sire,” said ho, " will you permit
mo to raise you up ?” By this time the
Emperor, who had been approaching,
on remarking this little aonae, came up
and joiued hia laugh with that <of the
Empress, whom he raiecd at once, say
ing witli an air of aroicablo grumbling,
"What childishness, Eugenie I You

spoonful. Cork tightly, nnd keep in a

a helf-teaapoonful of tbia syrup. A ba

give almost instant relief from colicky
pains—will not constipate, and contains
much luaa opium than the " soothing
syrups” sold in the shops, besides being
much cheaper. A quart will be required
to tuko your baby through its colicky
season.
