Though sorely tempted to overleap the barri

the proper modulation of the tone of voice. So
also in the rehearsal of numerous extract*, which
were alt committed to memory with extraordins-
care, and spoken with Auency amf grace.
We were especially struck with the self poa-
newton, ease and vlvncity which characterised
tbe exercise* a* a whole, and reflected much hon
or upon the training of the preceptors of the
institution. Several of the dialogues were well
■ustainrd and amusing, among the number the

been won by those pupils who had recited perfect

iovlwd the parents, guardianc and from!* of the
young ladies, to attend tbu recitations of the
seminary upon any day during t!u w ek, and
without previous notice, that they might thus
judge correctly of the progress made by those in
whom they were interested.
Throe constant visits aud private examinations
are designed to supercede and take Hie place of
the long and more formal public exercise* which
have usually been bcld at the cloae of the aobo-

are trying and far from sattolaclory ordeals to

The President also gave notice that next Fri
day afternoon, another public eulcrtalument
would be given. In which tbe Junior, Sophotnorc

In concluding this little sketch we would cun-

Men are sadly prone to diligently seek after
and extract all the evils and blemishes of the
church, that they may parade them in justifica

If the service ol God and rommuaion with
Him were properly regarded, this Ideated day
would never prove tedious, nor the lengthnlng

It to impossible to awdgn to the institution of
the S iblulli ni y precise date. From the fact
(hut God finished the grand work of creation in
six days and rested on tin* seventh, aud Messed
aud sanctified it. we may yet Infer that its oiigin
was thus coeval with tin: world. That Adam
knew and olwcrved the day. there to every reason
to believe, from reason and analogy. The Sale
bath was onlufeed for man's hem-lit and God's
glory. A* tiie Creator rested from Ills labor* ou
tbe seventh day, and hallowed it. so *hould ho
whom lie ninde in His image do tbe same. And
experience bus shown the vital necessity for tills
period of rest. Adam, though in a state of in
nocence, was a finite being, and while engaged
in Ilia care and dressing ol the garden, required
tiie ropowi of ordinary mortals.
Originating lit tills remote period, as a moral
law, the objection is met, that it wa* simply a

The next inquiry relates lo the change in the
8*hliulli, from the seventh to the eighth, or first

It will b# readily conceded lhal no particular
sanctity attaches to one day more than any other,
and that (he same I’awer that originated tiie first,
might adopt a isfond n* a period of rest and con
secration to His service. And we have cause to
believe from weighty Inferential reasons, thill
this change was made by Him, who wua indeed
Lord of the Sabbath.
The reasoni f'*r tiiifl were two fold. First, to
commemorate Christ’s resurrection fram the
' dead, and |huvc that having completed the great
' work of man's salvation, Ho was pleased to
