Our community wne elect rifled on
Friday last, by the intelligence that
Charley Gridin, a mulatto carpet bag
ger, and tho keeper of an obscure dog
gery, was the olive brunch of pouec
which General Grant had extended to
us in the appointment of a Postmaster.
Wo have nothing to say individually
ngainst Mr, Gridin, who wo suppose is
the true typo of hie class, neither better
nor worso than his black and tan con-
lreres, l’iorco, Welch, Tumor, eta., etc
hut we do in the oaim of an outraged
people, record our eolemn end indig.
nnnt protest against an act, deliberately
contrived to insult nnd axnepvt ate a
high minded and intelligent community.
The objeut sought is transparent to
the most- obtuse. Jt is to incite to
deeds of blood-nil ud and lawIt'Nsnosa,
which aro to be made tho pretext fur
remanding Georgia back to tho shack.
Ids of a military despotism. Out upon
e scheme so nefaiimis and unworthy of
e groat government.
Hut wo warn our people. Bo pru-
dent nnd circumspect, nnd "in puticuco

mica oircause to tiiumph over you. It
is but a question of time.
As sure as light succeeds the dark
ness of night, onpitul, superior intelli
gence, and t’ o inarch of destiny will
proclaim tho nsorndaney of the domi
nant race. Nor is that day portiiq*
very fur distant. Even now it may bo
struggling for biitb in tho vvuinb of
time.
Who shall say that the paradox of
pcnco resulting from red handed war,
may not be enacted, in tho speedy nnd
perfect restoration to the I'niun of nil
thn .Southern .States 7
This is the first practical result which
n foreign conflict would bring about,—
A divided and oppressed section, would
be an element of weakness imrtuad of
strength to tho government. .Surely it
Is tlio dictate of w isdom then to com
pose and settle all diflVrenoci at home,
that a united-front might bo presented
to tho oominon enemy.
Let us seek peaceably to have this
executive appointment revoked by a re
spectful memorial, and show (hut we
nro a law abiding, long Hufft-riug people,
even in the face of a Inimilintioii us de
grading as that which is new imposed
Upon us.
Tine L'atkhmi.i.aii IJuueTioN —In an
exporionco of many yours in tho huntid
region of thy seaboard, which is most
often infested by tills insect, wo have
uovur known them to uppour curlier
than August.
It is a well accredited fact also that
peculiar Staton of the atmosphere und
long coutinued ruins nnd sultry warm

of tho nppoaranoo of tho moth. Shade
likewise Booms almost essential to tho
development of tho larvae, ns scatter
ing or thinly planted fluids, or where
the growth is dwarfed by luck of lorlili-
ty or proper cultivation, arc oumparn-
tivoly exempt from viritution.
On the contrary, where the weed is
run!; and luxuriant, and ia moist situa
tions, the insect first shows itself, und id-
ways does the most damage. Wo have
remarked many fields where tho rich
■od luxuriant spots ulone wore attacked
and devoured, other portions of the same
eucloswrc escaping almost entirely.
Another obeaivablu fact is that cut-
er.pillara- usually follow mild wintern,
und in tho northern part of tho cottou
belt seldom do serious injury.
As you. travel trout!) their ruvagos are
more apparcut and'occur w ith greater
frequency.
Tho above facts afford ground for
comfort to the farming community, ns
tho lute and extremely cold Spring is
highly unfavorable to the propagation of
this insect, and in our opinion the moth
could not survive tho very low temper
ature to which tho mercury fell several
tinios during tho past whiten. There

portion of (he riffraff and tlontiug popu

out.
As it is, quite a sufliuient number of
intuHIgt-nf and reliable citixons are re
tained, to assure the ends ofjusiiuo.
This was more than exemplified by
the character ami action of tho suvcral
juries, both grand and petit, who linve
represented tho county for tho past two
weeks. A casual survey of any pnnnel,
was enough to scud dismay to the
heart of the luckless cu'prit, who may
have viftluted tho laws ol his country.—
Administered by such hands, tho law
has already become a terror to evil
doors, nnd crimes and misdemeanors
which for a long period huvo enriched
their perpetrator*, ware met by the
sword of justico and signally rebuked
and punished.
To all good men, the ovents of the
past few days are most encouraging.
With u vigilant Judge, upright nnd com

war's Pandora's box, ond bid fair to
spread like the plague ofleprosy through

The illiuit denier lias been taught the
salutary lesson, that a period must be
put to Ids illgottrn gains, nnd those
who trample upon the most snored in
stitutions of society, und violate ill u
shameless manner the prnprio io* ami
decencies of life, will find hereafter that
tho indictment of a grind jury is some
thing more than a mure brutem fuhnen,

Again, it has boon demonstrated that

Bows with Discuihisation,—Last
week out of our merchants shipped a
lut of cotton to tinvanuali, via Eufau/a,
and back again through Cuthbcrt pur
8. \V. Ifnib'ond to its destination, and
actually saved thirty cents per bale by
the operation.
tVe submit whether this is just to
tho enterprising inhabitants of our little
fixing the route ol tho road, but the ex
pression was decidedly in favor ol a
direct route to Chuttnuoogn, and most
probably by way of Knoxville. It Wos
slated that the dixtnuco from Cincin
nati to Chattanooga by way of K nax-
villa was only BOO miles, while by way
of Louisville nnd Nashville (tho present
railroad route! it to 480 mites. The
Ionian of the friends of tho road is that
the city of Cincinnati shall indorse bonds
to an amount sulficiunt to build it, nti-
thoiitv having been obtained from the
Legislature to indorse bonds to tho
amount of ten million* of dollars for this
purpose.
The object of the Cincinnatians is to
roach tho iqturinr of the Mouth ond the
Southern senbord hy shorter routes than
those now used. 'Hie advantage enjoy
ed by Louisville, 8t. Louis and New
York in having shorter or cheaper lines
of communication with the South is ap
parent. An effort will be made, proba
bly to Imvo tho “Southern Ituilrond" lo
cated so ns to run direct to Nashville
nnd there connect with the linn, vis Dtra-
t nr, to Montgomery and Hid mo, Ala.,
tho nearest seaports by this route being
Fensncolu und Mobile. Hut the strong
indications are that the direct route to
Chattanooga will be preferred.
This enterprise ought to bo a stimulus
to tho building of the two proposed rail
roads now engaging attention here—
wo mean the direct connection of Co
lumbus with tho Atlanta A West Point
rood, and the Hainbrldge, Cuthhert and
Columbus lluihoud. When Cinc nnati
builds her road to Chattanooga, a con
tinuation <if n direct railroad to Colum
Inis would lie highly important to our
city; nnd tho direct connection with
Cincinnati would mnko tho link between
this city nnd the Atlanta and West
Point road a paying railroad, Tho stock
would certainly be n valuable one, and
the profits of the road handsome. The
Buinhridgo, Cuthbert A Columbus Bail-
rend would be a further extent of tliu
I nee. t route from Cincinnati to the Gulf,
and this would secure a great deal of
through freight for it. 'I’ho encouraging
prospect thst both these proposed roads
would lie links in tho cluiin of direct
communication between Cincinnati ami
the Gull ought to ptouiote their Rncces4
and o dinm-u tho value of their sbn-k.—
There is no other route so short and di-
reel by which Cincinnati can reach tho
Gulf nnd tho West India Islands.—
Tlieio is no other route by which the
produce of FI <iiJa and the West Indii
could he trims; oiled so quickly and
cheaply to any of the great Htutcs be
tween tho Alh'ganies nnd tho Mississippi
river Uailrouds forming link* of this lino
of iftinmimirntion would certainly do a
lucrative business. I.ook at the map
and see how nearly straight this great
inland line of traiisportullun would be.
It would bo imposi-iblo evor to better it,
and it would be safe from damaging
rivalry.
The Ciuoinnnti ".Southern Railroad" is
one that nearly nfleets projects in which
this part ol Georgia is interested, nnd is
particularly important to (Mnmbii*. Wo

Probable Death of Provident
Grant.
Tho Radical party nominated for
Vice-President the man Colfax, in anti< -

The party denied that Wentbdi Phillip*

for the second place, a man of our own

Tlio probabilities thut Grant will bo

liis removal by death are increasing.—
I'Mvate ndvicos from W ashington indi
cate that Grant is failing in health Very
rapidly. It Is even doubted If ho will

tions a year, ulihough lie may riot he.
fore that time ho in hie gruvo. The
malady under which he is suff-ring is of
the kind thut kills the mind before the
Insly dies, although the death of the
Imity inevitably follows.
Thu symptoms in Grant’s case are
both mental snd physical suffering.—

appearing to be thorn uglily fagged out
by each day's round of wmk. He
smokes incessantly, snd sits for hours
with his little girl's hand in his own,
not uttering a word, and never rallying
except when his wife, whose anxiety on
account of his condition is ill disguised,
make* it a point that lie shall.’
Medical gontloinrii will, even fiom
thin brief description of the symptoms,
readily reoogni/u the malady which is
rapidly unfitting Mr. Grunt for mental
effort of any kind, and hastening him
surely to the grave.
Insanity, in any ol the moro co union
phases, is probably not hereditary in
the Grunt faintly. Hut that loss ol rea
son which results from what is calk’d
softening of tliu brain is not, properly
speaking, n form of itmanity ; hut ruth-
or tho effect of u physical disease, thut
may result from a great many different
causes. Excessive intemperance in

In Mr. Grant'sojfe. tho \n«lresi-ondbili-

it nvolves, huvo doubtless supplied the
element which, ia u system already pro
pared for its entrance, lorn developed
tho latul disease. As u writer tersely
expressed it, the Presidency has proven
’loo much for him/
Such is Mr. Grant’s state of health
thut tho country should not be surprised
if ho should be disqualified to perform
tlio da ties of President before the next
meeting of Congress. Whether, in thut
case, Congress would proceed immodi
atvly to inaugurate Mr. Colfax, or not,
would pvrhnp.i depond upon tho opin
ions of medical experts »» to tho possi
bility of Grant’s rooovory. The reasona
ble presumption, however,is,that the only
hope of liis i ecu very is in retirement to
a private and poifactly quiet life. As
