A Lima Auvic* to Planters.—To
our farming frienda whose stand* of

would tirgo that they substitute speck-

Those can bo raised w ithout trouble,

Tiik Dickson Guttonskkd Acai.n.— We
have received u lengthy communication
from Mr. David Dickson, of Oxford,
culpatory of I ho charges made by tho
plnntors near Colomunt tfUtlon, ns to
tho spuriona elmraoter of tho seed fur
nished them.
Mr, D. suys they will suffer flu loss,
ns his compensation wns simply ball of
thoseod failed. Moreover, he states that
he was ignorant of the uasoutul condl
tion of the artiulu, which was grown by
another individual front seed furnished
by himself.
Tho sucks he adds wero intended to
bo a giinrmileo of their puiity.
Without charging that Mr. Dickson
was guilty of aotual or intentional fraud
in this transaction, wo still incllno to tho
opiniou that it was hardly fair to guarnn-
tco seod strictly to bo his own, without
even huvlng seen them.
True, tho individual who planted
with him on «Uaro« uvay, and most prob
ably did disposo ol a gonuiuo nrtfolo.—
Hut how often is deception pruatioed
under t-iniHm- circumstances!'
No muii osn guarnntoo any tiling,
unless it comes under his personal ob
servation.
In this instance, tho utisoiindnesB of
tho sooil, was a greater injury than
want of gonuiiieno«M would have been.
lly using them tho planter, nftor
all iiis pains und toil, lost tho most pro
fkius portion of tho season, and may
wow fait in scorning any crop at nil.
Wo nro constrained then without im-
pugniog Mr. Dickson's honesty or in*
tegrity, still to adhere to tho position,
that it is iinpmpor for him to sell under
his own privets brand nnd imprim
atur, seed which merely purports to
bo pure, but which has never been
■{touted, or oven mien by himself.
Tho (acts as published wore received
from tho lips of a perfectly reliable
gontfoumn, who oven told Mr. Dell that

Those facts wero subsequently re-
pouted to Cun. Gilmer, tho Vico Prcsi-
dent of tho Central Railroad, nnd other
directors, with the assurance that self
protection would compul our people,
however reluctantly, to transmit their
produce via. tho Chatahoochco and
Gulf Road to the seaboard, and uIko
receive their goods ni,d supplies by tho
same route, unless the grievance above
mentioned sliuli lie abated. It was also
intimated that prominent warehouse
men and capitalists, were so much arous
ed by the injury to tho trndo of our city,
caused by these discriminations, that
they had oven projioscd to establish a
line of wagons to Fort Guinea, by which
cotton could bo delivered to tho bouts
without the intervention of the Railroad.
It gives us great pleasure to state,
thut tho complaints of mu* oitt/.im* were
wi ll and favorably rose!ved by tho ofii
cials referred to. Gen. Gilmer especial
ly, promised lo bring the whole mutter
lieforo tho nimiiiil meeting, or u called
meeting of the slock holders at.d Board
of Directors.
That gentleman is in favor of a regu
lar freight tablo based upon actual dis
tance, and suilnblo extra charges for
handling, poriorago, etc., in addition.
This is (lie desideratum our people
arc striving to obtain.
As bus been stated in ft previous ar
ticle, no objection is urged lo the prices
charged lor transportation, nnd our
merchants would cheerfully submit oven
to an increase of tho same, if essential
to thu maintenance of the road. Nor
have they forgotten the immense bene
fits derived from tho old roads, which,
conntruotod in thu fuco of many tliffi-
culties, find by private enterprise ulone,
proved the opon Kcsumn to vast regions
of territory, now blossoming like the
rose, but then an uHl'oddcu wilderness.
Tho principle which wuimates us
the inevitable law oi self preservation.
Wo cannot remain supremely indifiur
ent while produce and trade, legitimate,
ly tributary to our town passes through,
or goes around iih to n rival muikct,
which owes its superiority mainly to the
protecting policy of a grunt corpora
tion. Moreover, it is our doliheruto
conviction tliut much of the disaffection
which has culminated In tho propose!
construction in divers portions of the
State, of other railroad connections, nil
of tvhiuh will affect more or less the
grand nitorios now in oporution, is the
result of tho illiberal nnd unwise poli
cy which has swayed tho counsels of
tliurto old organizations.
Nor is it too lute to repair to n grout
extent tho orror which has been com
mitted. Indeed reforms until bo conce
ded, or some of tho now enterprises
wlion completed, will sap very seriously
thu future business und prosperity of
the rends in question.
As an old stock holder in tho Central,
aud the sun of one of its original pro
jectors, wo can but Impo therefore that
tho present system of dinerimioutiou in
freight chargee, may bo speodily abol
ished, nnd n permanent turiff adopted,
based upon the uctunl distance from u
seaport out lot.
StYannah-
N<J better evidence can bo uflorded
of tho Substantial growth nnd prosperity
of uur ancient seaport, than is to be
observed in the bustle and life ntiil to
be scon upon her streets, at thin usually
dull nnd spiritless season of tho yenr.
Yankee energy, with Yankee capital,
seem to have infused new vigor into ev
ery branch nnd department ol business.
All thonew appliances,conveniences, nnd
luxuries of Northern cities have been
introduced, nnd jtrogreu is written upon
every tiling.
Tho street Railroad already a paying
institution, has had the sffjot ns a 'part
of the sumo concern, of advancing to
par the stock of the Skidawny Railroad
Company. The completion of that en
terprise will also add much to the mate
rial wealth of tho city and suburbs, by
retaining nt home hundreds of thou
sands which were wasted in travel, or
at tho watering places of tho North.—
Multitudes of businuss men will now
erect tasty villas and summer retreats
at every available spot upon the Suits,
where hoalth and the bracing broezes of
old ocean may be enjoyed, and the lux
ury of fish, crabs, oto., tul libitum.
In anticipation of this, real estnto is
rising rapidly, at Thunderbolt, Isle of
Hope, Mount Vernon, White Bluff, and
other seaboard points.
Merchants arc preparing for an un
precedented Fall trade, nnd the opening
of nuw jobbing und wholesale houses
is of frequent occurrence. Tho enter
prising firm of Orf and Watkins will
soon bo udded to tho latter. They are
now closing out their retail dovk, and
design an immediate extension ol their
store, preparatory to heavy European
importations for tho Fall business.—
Next winter our dry goods more hunts
will be able to reploiii-li their stocks in
tiuvnminh, upon terms folly ns good as
in Now York, and nt a heavy saving of
time and expense.
A stranger should not visit Bavnnnali
without strolling through the market at
an early hour of the morning. No
city in tho Fnion can present sueh
an array of the choicest vegetables,
which are most temptingly and refresh
ingly displayed on evory side.
With such infinite vuriety mid excel
lence in Natures fruits, the Gruhumito
may well rest content while foregoing
thu luxury of imbi uting beef, und swines
llesh.
Turtle, terrapins, prawn, crabs, and
magnificent specimens of lish still palpi
tating with life, rivet the attention of
tho fresh ivutur man from the country.
The venison nnd wild turkeys of i'luri-

born tho surrounding country, each
serve to make up a bill which might
silts tho appetite ol tho gruutost eplcuro.
