Now Method of Making Ice.
JACK IHWST ODTDONB—A ftKrniOKBATINO
■HIP.
Thursday ufternoon n number of gon-
tUmisii, by special invitation, witucssod
tbe opurafion* of n now invontlon winch
bide fair to bo one of grout practical
value. It is it process of making ico
and refrigerating by machinery in a abort
ppneo of time, at a comparatively small
cost, and to an almost unlimited extent.
The working of this ninphinery won ex
hibited on board the Htoamship VVm. Ta
bor, lying in tbo East Rivor, at the foot
of Nlnotsonth street, and its utility ant-
iafuctorily shown to tlio spectators. Thin
novel iuvoution does two things—it
makes ice with the thermometer at 90
degrees in the shade, and preserves moots
and fruita for transportation. It acoom-
plises its purpose upon the chemical
piincbilo that if all ths bent is extracted
out of any object It become intensely
cold. The ico is made in this w»y : A
steam engine by rnouns of two pumps
subjects carbonio acid gnsto a pressure
Htifncictit to liquidize it. In a liquid
•tato this gnu has lost its heat, but re
covers It again when convortod Into gns.
Accordingly, n simplo apparatus is con
trivod by which the acid in n liquid statu
is msdo to surround srnnll tunes filled
with water. Acid then returns to il
gaaomiR condition, and in doing so lakes
with it solid ico. There is no limit to
the number of these tubus or npaitinunts
of water, uud u largo quuntUy uf ice can
bo forniud st a time. Yusterduy about
twenty tubes wero filled and frozen to
an arctic rigidity.
Upon tlio same principle air can lie
rendered cold and dry by being passed
tbrongb those tubes while carbonic acid
is regaining its beat, and then can be
pumped into an air-tight chamber In
this chamber, thus filled with dry, fro
run air, any meat, fruit, or perishable
article can bo placed and preserved.
This now process lias been patented
by Mr. T. 8. U. Lnwonnd a company
formed to put it into practical operation.
A vessel has been fitted up with uir-tight
compartments and ice-making appara
tus, and tlio object of its owners in to
proceed to Texas, buy incut there at al
most nothing, and bring it to this mar
ket, fresh and cool. In tropics, too, by
this process ico can bo mado on tbo snot,
and tho luxury bo accessible to nil.—
The expenses of tho vcbhcI will be about
•10,009 nor annum : profits $860,000.
At tbo close of the exhibition, Mr. Lowe
invited tho visitors, Including mem bora
of tho press, to a collection in the cabin
of tho vessel, and at tho festive board
hu himself exhibited somo curious expe
riments of the wonderful power of tho
carbonic sold io fVoer.ing any object.—
Ho took a bog full of frozen acid, uud
by moans of it froze mercury in n very
short timo : reduced two bottles Tull of
clumpauno to the consistency of “shor-
bet," und pussod it around to his guont;
thon ho froze two eggs in two mlntftcH
to auob a stony hardness that they rat
tied nlong tlio tablo like grapo shot; a
thermometer had n\l its heat taken out
of it iu no time, and 1)0 degrees of cold
ness ail'd. Tho experiments, in foot,
might bo termed brilliant, and they fully
illustrated tho principle of his theory of
making ioo.—The Carolina Farmer, May,

Sickness is very largely tho want of
will. Everything is brain. There is
thought ami feeling, not only, but will;
find will includes in it fur more than
mental philosophers think. It nets uni
versally, now as upon mind, nnd then
just ns muab upon tho body. It is an
other name for lifo—force. Men in
whom this lifo or will-power is groat,
resist disease, and combat it when at
tacked. To arrav a man's mind and
will against his sickness is tlio supremo
art of medicine. Inspiro in men coin
age and pursue, uud thu mind power
will cast out disoMo. “Nothing nils
her. It is only her imagination,” H nid
tlio nurso to him one day. “Only" the
imagination ? That is enough. Rot
ter suffer in bone nnd muscle than in
imagination. Jf tho body is sioir, tho
mind can euro it; but if tlio mind itsuir
is sick, what can cure that ?~-.Vorwood.
