The I lth being Sunday no record made.
In our recent trip to Lumpkin, we were
astonished fo see a country *o rich and beautiful.
Rome of the bill/might be dignified almost with
the name of mountain*, and ibe crops e.-crywh.-ie
looked green and promising.
Lumpkin is piaoed upon a lofty elevation,
commanding a lovely view of the country for
miles. Its promenade of sycamores and w«ter-
oak* la one of the finest in the Stale.
The square too la very large, and delightfully
shaded with floe trees, not planted in stiff tight
line*, but grouped together aud arranged agree
ably to nature* model.
Many flowers and handsome private residence*
adorn the town, and we were the recipient* of
unnumbered attention* from her hospitable citi-
acn*. .
The Railroad alone la wanting to make Stew
art ooe of the most. important and Influential
counties In the State. Will she have If? The
decision rest* with herself.
Tik Stork and Shot or J. S' Akthont.—I|
may not be known to the merchant* and people
of South west Georgia, that our city can boast
an establishment, where tin work of every descrip
tion I* manufactured and sold at lower rate*, (ban
the same can be lirougbt from New York and
offered to the market.
Repairing U done at shortest notice also, and

late our citizen* upon the removal at length of
the filthy cos* pool, which Iqr so long n period
bus been a disgrace to tlie town, and a ami blot
upon the beauty of Ihe square. We saw one of
our councilmen In the broiling *»n, laying out the
oik for bis sable laborers, and must any it waa
II planned, and under Ihe admirable superin-
emlcnce of the Deputy Marshall, thoroughly
executed.
The water has Iteen baled nut. all tho garbage

No more will the open throats of a thousand
frogs make dismal lullaby to the sleeping guest*
of mine boat of the Brook-* House, and tlie shrill
clarion note of the ravenous luoaquilo, fa hushed
Id death.
Aud now gentlemen of Ihe city council, donl
hope to retire up n your lauteD, for there la much
yet remaining to be done.
Would that our work of censorship were over,
hut we must continue to hold to a proper ac
count, those who have Iteun constituted the guar
dians of the public interest.
We have still therefore, some-what to write
oguittsl you.
For the present however, we simlfconfine our
selves to the immediate vicinity of tho scone of
your late exploit*.
A walk of thirty paces beyond tbn striped ball
lot, in Uic direction of Judge Clarks office, will
reveal a prospect within a biscuits throw of the
square, at once shocking to the vision and olfac
tories of *11 decent people. In tbo open ares
adjacent to to the resMence of Mr. C. O. Brooks-

pings of hogs and cattle, while the gullies which
furrow Ibe surface, are piled breast high with oak
bushes, (the trimming* of trees.) presenting uu
aba tlie *s formidable as a Confederate defence, to
the unwary foot passenger who may encounter
them in bis courao.
Mr. Brooks assures u* also, tho effect of this
masterly disposition of street offal, will be to dl*
reel the floods underneath his dwelling, perhaps
to Hie upturning of lu foundations. Tho old
saw affirms that it i* an “ill wind that blows no
good” however, and Mr Jacob Davis inform* us
that lie has already removed .five wagon loadi of
superb manure from this standing cowpeu near
the aquare.
Shade of Epaminondas prince of adkveogera,
what say you to this ?
Now gentlemen, place tho ubiquitous Gloa-
son and bis gigantic mule, and curt in puaition,
and, poiutiog to this infamous quadrilateral of
abominations, say “ yon have carl* blanche to
r ake, scrape, and cleanse," and our word for it
uo more will this nuisance offend.
A clergyman also inform* us that, so thickly
covered i* the sidewalk leading to Ills residence
with the excrements of auimal*, that it is well
nlgb impossihlo to escape contact ami contami
nation when walking to the bouse of God.
IVe are satisfied that reasonably and intelligent
officials will be glad to have their attention culled
to these public nuisances, that If pairible thu
remedy may be applied.
We do no*, doubt their willingness to dischatge
their duty, nor should (hey take umbrage at out
mggestiuns as a Journalist, and fearless, though
just upholder of the people* right*.
Hi- Yesterday wax the warmest day we have
over experienced in this place. Tho thcrnioiuulcr
marked 93 degrees in tho shade, ami man and
beast literally panted for breath.
About 9 1*. M., tho welcome gleam of light
ning in the North-east was visible, and distant
thunder und opaque masses of cloud* coming
up like battalion* from the horizon, gladdened
all hearts w ith the prospect of rain. Hoon, the
paltering drop* fell like sweet music on thu
followed by a gushing down pour of that reft-ea’.
fug element which carried renewed hope to the
liu«b*ndinon, and caused the corn between thu
furrows to rejoice.
Wo love to note, and return thanks for (lies*

It is a bcatlieniah doctrine, which the latalisluud

IUuaoao Murtvu is Llmpaik.—Last Satur
day upon the occasion of the completion of the
survey to that point, a vast assemblage of the
people of Stewart met at the Court bouse, to of
fer material aid to the enterprise.
Judge Wimberly occupied the chair, and
speeches were made by Col. A. Hood on tin
psrt of the directory, H. II. Jones, Rev. A. I.
Hamilton D. I»„ Cupt. Tiiiulin, and Mr. Bell.
We never law a meeting inoro deeply interest
vd and absorbed in any subject. Col. liarkie
also being called upon, gave a detailed account
ol U.e topography of tho country from Bain-
bridge to Lumpkin.
He*said, no region could l»e more favorable for
the construction of a Railroad, from the iuitlul
point, to the bsnlu of the Pataula.
In Stewart, the grading would be very much
heavier, but he believed the road lied across lj»e
county, about 21 miles, could be constructed
for *200,000. Dr. Hamilton’s and Mr. Bril'
efforts covered the whole ground, and elicited
prolonged applause frym thu crowded audience.
The Doctor took well with the people and
was very happy in wine of his hits. Cspt. Tunr
lin spoke briefly but to the point. Col. Hood
too gave a satisfactory account of the operations
,of the Board, nod pledged their unwearied dili
gence and fidelity in the discharge of the impor
tant trust*.confided to them. 980.000 were raised’
and it is believed that the entire amouut for
the county of Stewart will be forth coming at
an early day.
The Hoard of Directors held a meeting on this
day also, and Col. Bruton ft* energetic presi
dent, announced that be had succeeded in nego
tiating with on* of Ihe banks of Columbus on
the most favorable term*, for all the funds which
would be needed for several months to oorne.
The survey will reach Columbus before the
close of the present month, and the Board will
then reassemble in that city, and probably take
steps for the early letting out of a large portion
of the grading of the road.
The country aocuu fully aroused to the Im
portance of till* great undertaking, and we trust
ore long ground will oe broken, nod thu work ot
construotion la-gin in good earnest.
