That false and exaggerated estimate*
nnd reports of the growing crop in this
section, have been widely circulated, no
ono will deny who is posted ns to facts
nnd cnpablo of forming n correct opin
ion.
Personal olwervntion, nnd information
dorired Irom careful uud competent in
dividuals, loud to the following oouclu
sions :
1st. Tho crop is at tlm fewest circu
lation two weeks behind its usual status
at this stage of the aeason. This is tbo
result of tbe exceedingly late spring,
and tbe rrpented slight frosts up to
May, which though not killing the plant
outright, yet left it feeble, yellow, nnd
ooverotl with lice. Afterwards, abundant
ruins induced great sticcnlouoy nnd a
rapid growth, which was again suddenly
uhcckod by tho late dry and extruiuely
hot spell.
W hen th* rains act (n two or threo
days since, thoussnds of acre* iu this
and adjoining dainties Imd coast'd to
grow, and were flowering all over like
fields early in Bo| leather. Except
where ample distance in the hill, alsoi
hud been left, the burning suns Imd
played sad havoc with tho squares nnd
young fruit.
We have *vcn trope in which,nt least
ono hulf of the embryo fruit lay on the
ground, or had dried upon tho brunch.
cm. This fact hundreds will attest.
2dly. Where fertilizers have been lav-
ishingly employed, under the stimulus ol
repented rains prior to the drought, the
cotton weed has spuing forward luxu
riantly, nnd developed far more stulk
ami fibre than bolls.
Thu burning guano beneath, and the
fiery ordeal above fur several weeks
past, have each conspired to bring to
grief the exuberant hopes of many plan
turn, who tulkod largely, or harvesting
more lliun n bale to the acre.
Tbit portion of tho crop therefore has
suffered most.
W'e feel justified accordingly, in tho
assertion that the forthcoming crop, in
S. W. Georgia, will not be an average
one, leaving out of account even tbe
well authenticated tidings that tho gen.
ulno caterpillar haa appeared in Dough
erty, Baker, nnd other of tho lower
Counties. Should this scourge prove
i\h fatal and general ns lout year, tho
falling ofl* will bo sad indeed. Of coursa
the above statements are subject to
modification in pnrticnlar locations,
where the seasons have been more pro
pitious. Iu the main, however, they
will bo found to bo correct.

While the quarrel was progressing
