M. B. LAXAK OX THK DEATH OF HW WFK.
Oft. when the son along the West
His farewell splendor throng,
Imparting to the wounded bread*
The spirit of tepose,
My uind reverts to former scenes,
To Jojs of other days,
When lore illumed all my dreams,
And hope inspired my lays.
I would not for the world bereave
Fond m.-moryor those timet,
When seated here at sum mer's eve,
I poured my early rhymes,
To one whose smile* and tears proclaimed
The tryumpb of her art,
And plainly to’.d 4 tti3 minstrel reigned
The monarch of her heart.
Enrich with every mental grace.
And every nnnl worth.
She was the gem of her bright race
A paragon on earth,
9o luminous wi'b lore and lore,
So little dimmed by shade.
Her beauty threw a light before
Her footsteps as she etryed.

Tnx Tomato as Food.—The annexed
is strictly true, and worthy of careful at
tention by our readers :
Dr. Bennett, a professor of some cele
brity, considers the tomato an invalua
ble article of diet, and ascribes to it very
important medical properties :
1st. That the tomato is oce of the
moat powerful aperients of the liver and
other organs : where calomel is indiva
ted, it is prooably one of tiie m*>st effect
ive ond the least harmful remedial
agents known to the profession.
2d. That d chemical extract will be
obtained Iron: it that will supercede the
use ot calomel in the cure of disease.
3d. That he has >uocessfully treated
•diarrhae with that article alone.
4th. That when used us an article of
.diet, it is almost sovereign fur dyspep-
£ia und indigestion.
5th- That it should be constantly used
as au article of daily food ; either
cooked, raw, or in the form of catsup, it
id th.o most healthy article in use.
