Atau early hour Wednesday
morning persons froth the country
began to arrive to witness the con
test between the Cuthbert and Eu*
ftaula firemen, and by 12 o'clock
our streets presented a busy scene
ot moving humanity. The rocent
rains having cooled the atmosphere,
all uature srtmed to Ifend her smiles
to the interests of the occasion.
The evening train from Eitfaula
brought the Clebutnes and E. B.
Youngs, with a large delegation of
citizeus, who were met at the depot
by tbe Cuthbert firemen and
corted to Powell's ball aud cor
dially received by an apropos
speech from the gallant Chief—
Hon. Geo. McDonald,—bidding
them thrice welcome to the hospi
talities of our city, and aspiring
them of an equal showing in the
contest for the prize. Chief Pe-
try, of Eufaala, responded in be
half of his fircmetl, when they were
taken in charge by our firemen and
citizens, to report again at 3 o'clock
to arrange preliminaries (or the
contest.
At the hour designated each
company reported at the hall when
the order for the contest was agreed
upon, putting tho E. B. Young’s
ou tho track first, to be followed
by tbo Cuthbert company then
by the Cleburne's. C’on-idera-
ble time was consumed in arrang
ing other preliminaries, and not
until near 5 o'clock did the Youug’s
appear upon the track. This com
pany wore a handsome uniform of
red spotted pants, black stockings,
white shirts and red caps, n.id was
eager for the signal to be given,
things road/ they moved off liko a
dart, making an excellent run and
coupling to the engine, but beforo
the pipetueu had attached tlici
nczzlo tho water came rushing
through the hose and caused a par
tpil "bust"—tiino 31 and ft fraction
seconds. This cast a dairipur over
their enthusiasm, bnt was greeted
with loud cheers fioin the compe*
ting companies. Tho following is
a list and position of tluir running
squad:
W. F, Dent, Foreman.
A. R. Bowdon, Plugmi’in.

Tho Watch fills being next on
deck the boys catue upon the track
feeling they had an easy job, and
that the cake was surely within
easy grasp. They were dressed in
attractive uniform of red pants and
oip, and wbi:e shirt and stockings.
They also wore a confident air of
success as they stood in the follow
ing order, awaiting the signal.

J. J. McDonald, Timekeeper.
At tbe dropping of (he sand bag
they leaped forward with a full de-
termination to win tho prize and
maintain their former record.—
They run lo the engine and made
a partial coupling in 13 seconds,
when the hose was caught by one
of tho arms of the reel which jerk-
ed it from its coupling and plog-
mcn, causing a complete fatlare,
as by the rules of the conteet no
accident was to bo considered.
This of course filled tbe Cleburnes
with confidence and created a hope
in tbe minds of the Young's that
they might yet be tbe victors, and
was tbe occasion of wild cheering.
Tho Cleburnes were now placed
in order upon the track by Fore
man D, T. Sbchan, wearing an at
tractive uniform of red pants, blue
caps, white stockings end flesh col
ored shirts, aad filled the following

with a big Jell to "go it boys*"
The ruu was made in capital
style, not a bobble or a slip, and
every toad did bis duty just at the
right time, and they made the run
of 100 yards, coupled to the en
gine reeled oil 100 feet ot hose de
tached tbe boss and coupled tbe
nozzle and threw water 100 feet in
a fraction over 24 seconds, taking
the prize amid deafening yells from
admiring friends.
This was a fine record and tbe
gallant Cleburnes wore their boo
ors gracefully and with command* 1
Ide prido.
Col. A. Ilood, Jr., in behalf of
tbe Cuthbert fire department,
mounted the engine and ia a very
neat little speech, presented the
$50 to tbe Cleburnes gracefully com
pliinenting them for tbe successful
manner iu which they went through
with the test and in defeating all
competitors. He also presented to
the sumo company a largo owl
from Mr. Kalluian, of Eufaula,
sent over for the victorious coni
pany. Mr. D. T. Shehan, foreman
of tho Cleburnes, responded iu be
half of his company, iu n few ap
propriate remarks.
Thus terminated the contest for
the honors and prizes of the day,
when ull adjourned to meet again
at the hall later in the evening.
By 9 o'clock tho hall was well
filled with firemen aud citizens,
and nn hour spent in social con*-
verso and promenading. About 10
as announced tffat the ladies
had spread In a room below a ban
quet for nil, but ns the roam was
not large enough to contain the
crowd present, anil firemen, with
their lady escorts and visitors
would first be entertained and then
tho citizens. At this juncture, and
beforo tho crowd began to with-
draw to tho dinir.ff hull below,
Chief Petry, of Eufaula, appeared
upon the stage and in a short speech
presented a beautifully carved
heavy silver water pitebdr lo tho
Watchful fire company of Cuth
lert. This was a great surprise to
otir hoytr, whose thanks w
turned in a short speech by Judge
Kiddoo.
Tbe banquet was tho most com
pi etc success in bVcry Way ever
witnessed in Cuthbert. Every
delicacy in great profusion wns
provided. It is estimated that
fully 600 persons feasted here, and
yet not one bulf tho spread
consumed, Tho ladies of Cuthbert
more than maintained their former
enviable reputation lor hospitality
and good Ustc, iu tins bountiful
and richly prepared feast. No del
icacy or luxury was wanting, but
tho supply of ics cream and every
variety of cake, salads, boiled haiti,
barbecued shoat and kid, jellies,
custards, preserves, pickoli, etc.,
etc., werB simply inexhaustible,
and fully as many tnoro could bate
been fed aud yet dozens of baskets
full been left.
A largo nud elegantly trimmed
rako was presented to etch of tbe
Eufaula companies by the Commit
tee of ladles having the banquet in
charge.
This royal feast over tbo band
began to play and the graceful
forms of youth and bcatity beg in
to keep time in the marry dauce,
and not until the hour of 8 in the
morning had been maked did the
happy assembly disperse to couit
sweet repose in the arms of mor
pheas.
Long will the pleasures incident
to the firemen's contest of Wednes
day linger in the memory of all
present.
Yesterday morning at 0 o'clock
our Eufaula friends took their de
parture fur home, delighted with
their visit to our town, expressing
tbe hope that we may all live to
see tbe contest repeated in their
city twelve months hence.

acres in on* body And no lands in
the county lie better or aro mote
productive. We saw one field of
over one hundred acres in cotton
that was fine an j in excellent con-
ditloo. One attractive feattire
about this field is that in every
inside corner of a string of fence
running along the road for nearly
a mile, tbe Doctor has planted
walnut aud now has a thrifty
young walnut tree about every 12
feet on the entire lino. It is his
object to utilize them for fence
posts as soon as they are of suffi
cient size, by attracting wire to
them. He will have a fence that
will last a lifetime and the walnuts
gathered annually from Ida trees
will yield a good revenue. Why
do not other planters adopt this
plan of fencing their lands ?

While lighting the parlor lamps a

moments it was thought the flames
would get beyond control. For
tunately, however, the building
was saved with no other damage
than destruction and injury of
some articles of ornament.
