The paper is remarkably proaerved,

James Monroe, President of the
United States, That, and a lung

Having already been frequently
Interviewed M to tho cause of this

we have bee* prompted in our ac

tiavo bought a half interest in the
Chattanooga Dili/ and Weekly

Chattanooga is emphatically
livo placo, and has a future, in the
judgment of all acqtiaiatcd with
her rapid growth and surroundings,
second to no city in tho South,
Hero wo hopo to find employment
for all ol our time, which will sure

for our loved ones. We are too
poor and havo too many resronsi
bill tits resting upon us to ioduige
oursoli in tie amount of loisure

years. To get in a larger field,
where our talents anil skill as n
printer and publisher could bo

itably employed, is tho enure of
our closing tho Appeal.
Wo liavo arranged with Dr.
Stanford to furnish all of our sub
scribers, who had paid for tho Ap
peal in advance, and whoso sub
scriptions have not expired, with
the Eutorpriso for tho full timo
paid for, which wo hopo will provn
satisfactory.
Wo will speak not of our efforts
behalf of Cuthbert and her
every enterprise for nearly eigh
teen years, for they arc of record,
as tbo columns of tho Appeal havo
over reflected our views upon all
issues. That wo havo erred in
judgment, at times, is hut human.
God grant (but tho press of Culh«
hert for tho next eighteen years
may as truly and sincerely labor
for tho good of Culhbcrt us the
Appeal has tried to do.
During our rcsidenco in this
pleasant town many tender ties

our hoart (hat will bo hard to sev-

shall lovo to think and talk about
tho good people of Cuthbcrt.
To tho press of Georgia and

aud friends in Georgia, after an
absence of 19 ycats from his native

all our states.
—Mrs Passmore, after a short
visit to Atlanta, came back on
Monday last. She will reopen her
school soon with fine prospects of
sn Ucrvtued patronage. She is a
thorough and prsctioal teacher and
the patrons of the Mullins school
house are fortunate in scouring her
services for another term.
Special to tbe Appeal.]
Never in tbe history of tho Uni
versity has the labors of the Fac
ulty been crowned with greater
success than in tho present com
mencement. All exercises so far
have been unusually fine, which is
a good evidence that tho Umrertl
ty is training tbe youths of the
land in tbe way they should g<x—
These are the seutimpnts of the
resident and visiting publir, and
all seem highly pleued with the
brilliant prospects. Every train
bring large crowds of visitors and
it is difficult to get board at the
hotels, besides these many of our
residences are filled with visitors,
both male and female. Among
soiiio of our most dUthg'iHhcd
visitors we notice Gov. McDaniel,
Bishops Beckwith and Pierce, Sen
a tors Brown and Colquitt, Judge*
Hall and Vason, Cols. Gresham,
McIntyre, Grady, Felton and
Black. Besides these there are
numberless others but our limited
space forbids notice.
Tbe fun began ou Monday the
7ih inst., by the convention of the
Sigina Alpha Epiifoii Fraternity,
which bus chapters of ils order in
most all of our Southern colleges.
There being present about 40 inein
hers of tho brotherhood and 18
chapters of tho order being rep

held in secrecy, but tbo roddent

On Tuesday night at tho resi

Chup'er, located at this Uuiversi-

aluinni members a banquet, and
ou Wednesday night a reception
given them at Dupree Opera
Homo by the same chapter. Both
highly eujoyc 1 by nil present

incuts, which speaks well for the
hapter here, for their most cour
teous treatment.
On Friday night came Prof.
White's complimentary reception
to the Senior class. Here could be
tho belle amt beaux of all our
larger cities and many smaller ones,
aud coal times which would plcare
of the most fastidious.
Most of the guests delighted them*
Ives in dancing, while others en
joyed themselves u« spectators and
by promenades. This was kept up
until u bite hour, when all having
tcudired their grateful thanks to
the most learned ProftssOr and hit
highly accomplished wi'i, hade
them gooil evening and dispersed
lo their places of abode, knowing
that tho evening Ind, n» usual on
such occasions, been pleasantly
spent.
This brings us to Saturday which
commences tho regular exercises of
.the University. At. 10 A. M., the
Board '»f trustee* met in their room
when business pertaining to that
body wad transacted. Wo aro

in a pleasing manner and grand
stylo delivered his oration. His ml

didly arranged, and was loudly
applauded in his effort. The bistu
run, Mr. J. U. Moll, of Athens,
was next introduced. He spoke of
the career of each member of tho
clast siuce hit entrance to the pres
ent time, Mr. Ik A, Crawford, of
Athens, next rcspoudtd as class
Prophet, who told tho future of
tho members of the elars aud if Ins

way rejoicing.
At 8} o'clock the Annual Cham
pion Debate between tbe Demos-
thenian and Phi Kappa Literary
Societies took place in tho chapel,
Hon. J. 0. C. Black, of Augusta,
acted as Judge on the question re
solved 'That tbe choice of tbe
President by a popular vote is
preferable to an election by the
electoral college.” The Demos-
thenians appeared on tbo affirma
tive with the follow ug representa
tives: Mr. J. B. Williams, Ella-
vllle, Ga, Mr. P. V. Pollock,
Pome, Ga., Mr. K. F. Hinton, Ma
con, Ga. Although their side was
an unconstitutional one they advo
cated their claims admirably, so
much so that four-fifth* of the au
dience present thought that they
would win.
On the negative side tbe Phi
Kappas responded in the fallow-
iug order; Mr. J. itbudes Browne,
Columbus, Mr. P. 3. W ill cox-
son, Newman, Ga , B. 11. Johnson,
Mi sisiipj i. After the debate was
concluded tbe President in a short
talk decided in favor of tbe nega
tive. It was generally conceded
by ail present aud who had wit
nessed many such debate* before
that for the thoroughness of dis
cussion and that for the finely de
ilverance of speeches, it was supe
rior to any, for a number of years.
This brings us to Sunday morn
ing, when the commencement tttT-*
mou was to be preaelad by that
eminent and ablo divine, Bishop
J. \V. Beckwith. Ife lock for bis
text the 26th chapter and 8th verse
of the AcU: "Why should it be
thought a thing incredible with
you, tbit God should rai.o the
dead.” This was one of the fined
sermons that u has bien the pleas
ure of the writer lo ever iisU u to.
ft shewed that the author was well
versed in the literary arts, and
that it had been studied thorough
ly. Iu the conclusion of his ser
mon bis advico to tbe Senior Class
was very touching, and aiiould be
kept by tbcm as a guiding star.
Muii'day was the day appointed
for the Annual Literary Address
At 10! o’clock the under-graduate
members accompanied by tltir
aluinni and honorary ones fih*i
from their halls and wero met by
tho orator of the day, Col. P. W.
