Married, At tho residence of ilm bride’s step-father, Dr. Folsom, near tills city, on Tuesday evening, by Itev. John M. Richardson, Mr. W, T. Cowles, of Thomaston, and Miss Nkllik Wycii*. Melancholy and Fatal Accident. Our whold community was shocked by a most terrible accident which occnred about six miles from tho city. Mrs. Jnno D, Walt, consort of Andrew Watt, was killed dead, by being thrown from a buggy, last Salilmth evening, near tho -house of Mrs. Mnsscngalo. Mrs. Watt, In com pany with her slstcr-fn law, Mrs. Stephenson, at tended church, nnd after service, went to call on Mrs. Mosscngaic, nnd arriving at the gate, the horee became frightened—one she lmd driven for tlm past tbn ye'atu, and' Is now sixteen—when a gentleman caught the horse nnd held him till tlm bridle broke, when he darted furiously nway, run nlng somo forty yards, tlic buggy striking n largo stump, throwing tlm two ladles forward out of buggy, distances ten nnd fifteen feet. Mrs. W, fell upon a rock, ber head striking, nnd was lmdly cut, nnd her neck dislocated, causing Ipstaut death. Mrs. S. was severely, though not seriously, hurt. The young man was also thrown some distance by tho sudden breaking of tho bridle, but not iiflured, Mrs. Watt was in the fifty eighthycar of her age, was nr. exemplary Christian, having been for forty years a consistent member of tho Associated Re formed Presbyterian Church, nnd was universally beloved by those .Who knew her many virtues. She leaves a devoted husband, two children, nnd numerous relatives and friends to mount their ir reparable lo.-s. Her funeral, on Monday, x tended by a,lnrgc*eohcoursc of friends, who man ifested much grief. Thieving, and What Come of It*—*'Matched.” Wo learn a negro boy was brought to town tho other day charged with Mealing chickens from brother Ethiopian. Ho acknowledged tlm corn;also told that a while fellow was concerned with hhn In an attempt to steal a horse from Mr. Win. C. Richardson, and was shot in tho arm by that gen- tlemon while trying to catch tho horse, but being allot, mounted .Ida own steed and left. Mr. R, hearing a stir about Ids lot went out fully equip ped, fired at the scoundrels, nnd hit t' c fellow, from tho negro's evidence. The hoy said tho white man hud a dark-lantern, nnd examined oth cr horses, hut did not. want any only tho best. lie is evidently a professional, ami onr furmeta should lie on tho alert for others. Now, if this order of things is to bo re established in our midst, let patrols bo organized. I’owder and lend is a very good purgntlve for this dlscaso— roguery, tlm first symptom of which is laziness. We imagine they will shun friend Richardson hereafter. i—IIOVT It Went ,a*t vveok we have been viewing tho jrogreea or tho ttovy appointments, and scones ami Incidents connected therewith, with tlm sagacity M a New England ofilee-scoker, not with antici pating caro, but “with n critic's oyo." Last Fri day “coino the tug of war"—not Joo Brown’s gun boat; hut tho now road appointees enuto up. nnd tho grand rush, or Radical scramble, for spoils commenced*, tho lame, tho halt, and. ths blind, black, taqned, and mixed, all, Were In to bid Hall to tho Chief.'’ On one sldo might bo soon bright and luminous countenances, who had pnst the Rubicon, whlloon tho other side might bo seen groups of wobegono, liungry-looklng loung- cra wno lmd been promised, but forgotten. Tho caucusing pressttro was heavy.- Bam. Baker was Installed Saturday morning, nnd retained our eitimaVlo young Iricnd, Win. Hamilton, as prin cipal elork. Tho dopot watchmen and other hands wero disposed of to pets. Wo bollcvo this Is as far as his power goes. So far as Mr. Raker's official capacity Is concerned, wo knbw nothing, ns this Is Ida first position of trust, by which his fitness might be determined, that 1m has over held In this county. Ho deserves credit, howover, for appointing so trust-worthy n clerk, and it ia to bo hoped that, in view of a business, reputation, ho will allow qualification and net politics to bo Ills guide. Thcro is n general grumbling amongst the oth er applUmiita for tho Agency here, and when the appointment bccanto known, they looked about ns crabtd as a bobtail bullock in fly-time, nnd ten times ss hungry ns a iown boy nth camp mcotlng. Harris, n big, oystor-lovlqg, beer-barrel Rort of fellow, froiti “up Nauth,” wo understand, is Su. pervisor. Raring this unnaturalized Intruder 1 ! tight to hold place, nnd reap tho reward which belongs to citizens, we shall Bay nothing of him, 1m seems disposed to keep thoso workmen on tho road, who are competent nnd attentive. Wo have heard of ho discharges by hhn so far. Judgo Bird Is continued in charge of tlm Bhop at tills place.* Something complimentary might be said of him, but for fcor that ho stands in tho category of a certain cx-rcbel Colonel nnd Rudical stump- speaker, who says ho don’t like to be noticed by tho Citizkn, for if it speaks .well of him U hurts, nnd if it notices his nets it hurts. The Judge isn’t needing compfimcnts from us now. Moses Collins bent the ynco between Mm nnd BUI Buk ;r, leaving tho California pony in tlm shade.* Tho race between them was rather a tough one, ns it was a matter of Fonio concern which was tho “lollcst.” Tho new nppolnteo, for Assistant Supervisor, we believe, will make a good officer, if not controlled by others. Thcro seems to ho much dissatisfaction about the distribution of the smaller places. Mr. Adams is still tlio Night Watchman, with some twenty or thirty contestants waiting for something to turn Ono of tho “enlightened” remarked that ho only wanted a place for a month, to give ldin start, “and money to buy Nancy n new enliker froek and the baby somethin’.” Ho 6aid this was nil ho asked for, nnd they should have given it to him. Having been kicked out or the Senate, ho now announces himself as a candi date for Congress from the First Dis trict. We don’t know where he would be more at home than in the present Congress or Sing-Sing Prison. Worth Knowing. Many persons lr» our city, afflicted with the prickly heat, may find relief in the following from the Louisville Courier: Prickly heat is prevailing to n great extent in our city. Many will ho glad to k-nrn that this infernal disease, for it can scarcely lie called by any milder term, can readily be cured by rubbing the parts affected with the rind of a watermelon. Radical Rule.—The Now York World sops: in March, 186G, gold was selling ,in this city at 124. Aftor more than two years of peace it is now sell ing at 147, or about twenty-three per cent, higher. Thus Radical rule has, in t\yO years, reduced tho value of the greenbacks, tho currency Which tho soldier is paid his pension in nnd the laboring man receives his pay. from eighty cents on tho dallar until it is now only worth sixty-eight cents on the dollar. . The Week of Prayer. The following notice nppoars in the Southern Christian Advocate: The observance of a n cek of prayer Inst year, throughout the church, resulted in greht. and we trust, Inating good to the cause of God. The appointment for the present yo r is August 28— 8<», that is the week from the fourth to the filth Sabbath in August, inclusive. The intervening Friday is to be observed as n dny of fasting nnd humiliation. It is honed that there will bo a general assem bling of the members of tlio Methodist Church during that week. To this end, let tlio appoint ment ho kept in view, und preparation made for ts observance. The 8ninc old wcathcr-cocks wero on the stump, with an addition of two others, but recently in the field. One, Jim Johnson, a gentleman of color, a boot maker, tihd un honest negro, was called upon to mnko a speech, and it is raid, made the most sensible ono of tlio bunch. Tho character of liia remarks, we did not learn, but be us they were, we sympathize witli him in his condescen sion. Wohder if Nut gave him tho right blind of fellow-ship. Brethren, let us mix., Tlio best on the role of fame was a pale-faced fellow, who rejoicetli in teaching tho Holy word to rinners on earth. But the raise rabid skunk— if wo do not violuto the skunk, by so culling him —has mistaken his mark when ho proposes to thus net, and follow his-vocation of exhorting. This fellow, during tho war, was a violent icces- sionist, and we learn, headed a list to make up a company. (Don’t know whether it was tho same one Nut joined or not.) Ho made a speech nnd declared himself willing to kill his own brother, in battle, on account of his consistent unionism, nfter tho surrender, this “Rev,” Scaliawag pro posed in church'to turn his Brother Compton out of tho Baptist Church, for mixing radicalism and religion. Now, where do we find him? Harangu ing a,set of negroes nnd radicals, adyising them that tlio succors of the Whito party is equal to their re-qnslqvcmcnt. A Republican who has a right to bo heard speaks, and it wero well that his appeal be responded to. Tlio call is by no procurement of Democrats, but is tho spontaneous outburst of honest indig nation nnd concentrated disgust.—Const it ution. Death’s Doings. Mr. John T.
