FARM ANT) GARDEN. Soiling vs. PMturing. Lot mo recite tho experlenca end Lot mo recite tuo exporionou ana prxctlco of a friend of mine. Coming Into possession of nbout nine ncrcs of lend In the neighborhood of n good market, mndn by the demands of n large literary Institution, bo cast about nsto wbatwestobedone. Two cows and n horse was tho stock In trade, for neat cattle. Ho was obliged to pay por sea son, men for pasturage, what they thought It was worth, at tho same time It was no small Job to drlvo his cows back and forth. That determin ed him to keep his cows In tho barn.— The greatest troublo was tho rapid ac cumulation of manure. By good hus bandry ho properly secured that, ho kept feeding It to his crops. Finding his crops Increasing, ho added another cow. Anothor cow only mado tnoro manure. More mnnuro husbanded In the same way mado more crops, and the third year ho addud another cow. Now began another serious dlflluulty. His barn was two small. Still at tho end of tho fourth year ho pill In anoth er cow and sot himself to work to get up a now barn, and when I last saw him ho had a now barn with modern improvements, of good size, a horse, a pair of eattlo, and yet had not thought or buying moro land, but wanted ono inoro cow. Now peoplo who do not want a large accumulation of manuro and a gradual Incrcaso of crops, should not adopt that style. But it sooths to mo that in our towns whore homesteads are In small lota and not easily procur ed, no bettor course could bo pursued than soiling tho cows, and at tho samo time fattening tho soil.—New England Homestead. pai the country are, on tho whole, quite chooring. Tho wheat crops nro larger than last year. In West-Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas, Utah, Colora do, Montana,Illinois, Iown, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Now York, Pennsylvania, Now Jersey, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, tho quality is regardod ns excellent. In Georgia,South Carolina, Alnbnmn, and Texas tho reports nro not so good, tho yield being indifferent. In Louisiana, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Southwestern Virginia, Goutral Ten nessee, North Carolina, Dolawaro and Vermont the crop has been an average ono. Tho oorn crop Is very largo and tho quality remarkably good. The yield this year will bo fully ono-thlrd moro than Inst. This Is especially tho case In tho Southern States. Oats, In Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Nobraskn, Iowa,Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont, Now York and Illinois, tho yield Is won. large, whilo In Louisiana, Mississippi Canning Tomatoes. A lady of Tuscumbia, Ala., comma nioatea to the Southern Cultivator her experience in canning tomatoes, which wo copy ns follows: Any tinner can make cans. Order them made with a.groovo around the top, like tho cans wo buy, only havo the groove deeper. Lid to lit nlcehj; buy of tho druggest wax, prepared for that purpose, (I have no recipe.)— Wash, scald, and skin the tomatoes, C ' them in a kettle—porcelain Is the t—let them heat gradually, until boiling hot; bo sure they aro heated thoroughly. With a cup and funnel, fill ono can, and place the cover on have the wax hot and pour it all arounc tho groove; set tho can in a safo place to cool, and put a small rock or ploco of brick on the top to hold tho lid firm ly down * 111 cold. Fill the rest of your cans in the samo manner. When all aro cold storo them away In a dry placo; freezing won't hurt them; moist cellars rust the cans. When you want to open them, spread rclo a thick cloth over the top, pour on boil ing water till the wax softens, and re move it. Save tho cans, lid and wax, for future use. There will bo no fail ure, If the tomatoes are perfectly hot when put in the cans, and the cans made air-tight. No sugar needed.— Half-gallon cans ought not to cost moro than $2 por doz.j can usa thorn four years, or four times. I think this tho cheapest way extant. All tho old “gherkin" bottles, nbout the house, may bo filled In this .way.— Set tho bottles in n pot of (told water, beat slowly, and, wben hot, nil up.corV, wltn a doth lift them out, on* at n time and pour on eomo of tho same wax you use on the cans. When cool, pack them away, in saw dust; light will spoil them. If a mould comos on top, it docs not injure them; with a small oon removo it all beforo emptying ' ottlc. Crop Hoports. Reports of crops from all parts of Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and othor Southern States it will not bo Tho Roaotlon. In the North tho voto against tha Republicans will bo very lionvy. Men know how far Damooratlo misrule will go, and ivlmt direction It would.tako, nnd they do not know tho limit of Rad ical madness.V Judging It by tho past, they find it difllcult to concoivo that tho Republican fury has any dollnito limit. Hitherto It hns hesitated at nnthlugi has pushed recklessly on whorover hounded ambitious lenders, nnd rather than bo dragged whoro'sii'ch a party would go tho peoplo will tnko tho chance of revolution with tho Uotn- ocrats. Republicanism, In fnct, is driven'to a point at whiuh It Is desper ate. For two years it has stood n;ion tho defensive before the peoplo. llnd tho popular Jealousy of its tendencies been less olenrly shown it would linvo pushed on to tha extremity of confisca tion and proscription; for its leaders felt that these were accessary' parts oY its policy, that these alono could give It safo possession.of what ithadalready moro than an avorage. The rains lately injured tho orops in Now Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Maine. Tho barley crop will be an average ono. Hay, moro than an averago crop will bo realized. In Pennsylvania, Now York, Indiana, Ohio, Now Jersey, Delowaro and Maryland the yield is very largo and excellent. Cotton, folly au,average yield Is ex ported. Sugar promises woll, but very littlo was planted. Fruits, almost a total failure, espe cially in the Middle States, and the peach crop will not be half what it was last year. In tho'extreme South the prospeot is better. In New York applos look better, nnd potatoes aro generally large and good. Heavy mildew and lice have kilted tha hops in Pennsylvania. Without confiscation, the results of nogrq suffrage will Blip through Its fingers. Without. proscription, the Southorn Stales cannot be kept fi tho nntural leaders of tho South wople. Tho Republican party of tho 'ulurc, therefore, will bo ready for any desperation, convlnoed from its .pnst that the greatest dangor is in standing still. There Is, then, greater renson than ever why It should bo kept from power, nnd this the peoplo evideiitly feel. Last year, tho gains against the Republican party on Congressional votes hnd wiped out its former majori ties and established an equality, and,, constantly Increasing, the gains will' now make the balance on tho other sido. Such n chnngo ns wo have seen in Oregon, nnd half such majorities ns Kentucky has given, will present a to tal to astonish and confound political philosophers—N. Y. Herald. Rough bat Graphio. Col. E. U. Townlcy, lalo of the Fed eral army, and a prominent convert from Radicalism, made a facetious speech before tho Democratic Club at Baltimore, a few nights sinco. His ex perience of army lifo Is edifying, and we extract a leaf from it for public de lectation. Read this: “ I will bet that they will not get a Jew voto, I was there whon that order was issued. It was just before the Ya zoo Pass expedition at Helena. Every Jow was put ashore. A Jew friend of mine was placed at night on the banks of the river with $1,000 worth of goods, in the morning there was not a rem nant of his property loft. Why did they send them back ? Was it because thoy feared their honesty and patriot ism l No; because some generals were fearful that somebody would get more cotton than they did. 1 havo seen of ficers buy whole stcambont loads at twonty-fivecents abale.
