j Irish Potatoes,
Ono orilio most important quostlons
that presents itself to tlio farmer is
how to keep Irish potato seed. Mr.
H. II. Potter makes in the Southorn
Cnllivutor the following suggestions on
this subject:
The deterioration of Irish potato
sood is a perplexing thing, and, doubt
less, there are thousands, in the South,
who would bo glad to know how to
keep their seed pure. It is a drain ou
the country, every year, to got Irish po
tato soed, to sny nothing of tko lncon-
vonienecs and perplexities, of not get
ting, oftentimes, very euitnblo kinds,
after all. Wo all know of many who
have kept their seed from year to year,
hut they nro not ns lino, smooth and
firm as imported seed. There are two
causes which oporato to make the sood
doterioriato, and thoy are: First—The
best potatoes aro often used for the ta
ble, aud tho indifferent and refused
ones saved to plant j And sooondly.—
Thoy nro allowed to sprout beforo
planting timo.
The seasons of tho South are too long
for tho Irish potato. Thoy mature in
tho midst of tho summer and If allow
ed to remain in the ground, sun-scorch,
rot and also sprout.
These causes eon and must ho suc
cessfully obviated. Then wo will bo
ablo to keep better Bocd, or, at least ns
good and moro suitable varieties, than
wo can buy.
Tho plan, which Is successfully prac
ticed by myself and others, is to pro
cure a suitable variety. Out off tho
seed end (tho end having tho grontcsl
number of eyes) and only plant tho
stem end. Break deep and plant in a
rich, moist soil. Set npnrt some of tho
best for seed, from which take none
for eating. Big ns soon as tho vines
die; soled the finest and best for seed.
Reduce to a Intent condition by piling
them in a cool and vory dry placo.—
Cover them, leaving an oponing at tho
, top ns a fine, through which tho vapors
can eseapo. Don’t bo afraid of their
overheating, for I tell you it Is impos
sible, so long ns there is any moisture,
and they nro loft open. And when
that disappears, thoy are tho latent-
wili not beat or sprout.
Another suocossfnl plan* is to pro
cure twice ns many bushels of perfect
ly dry sand as you hnvo potatoes. If
it is damp, sun-dry it on a scaffold, or
kiln-dry it. When well cooled, lay a
floor of boards on tho dry, cool ground,
on which placo six Inches depth of tho
sand. On this put the same dcptli of
potatoes; another layer of sand to fill
nil tho fissures, and to tho samo depth
as before, and soon. This dry sand
will absorb so muob of the moisture as
to reduce it, and will provont heating
or sprouting; and, on examination, in
the spring, your seed will bo ns plump,
smooth and firm ns that from which
they were raised, and can thus be kept
pure from year to yonr.
Hog Rons.
Every farmer knows bow offensive
a common sized hog pen or yard be
comes during tho hot weather of sum
mer, and how during tho rainoy timo
it becomes in fact a swamp of mud.—
To remedy this those who have abun
dance fill up with straw or other littor,
ashes, Ac., and yet tho remedy is only
partial; the smell is not disposed of,
and the animals are full half tho timo
wnidiug in mire.
The following manner of building n
pen wo hnvo kuowu to remedy the evil
completely: Take two pieces of 0x8
timber each fourteen feet long; dress
ono end of each in form of a slud run
ner, thon lay them parallel eight feet
apart, with tho six inch odgo on tho
ground; now take 4x4 scantling and
halve or tonant in crosswiso one piece
nt each end, and ono foot from the
ends of the rnnners, leaving the four
inch strips ono and ono-half-inches be
low tho level of tho upper side of tho
runners; next lay n iloor of ono and
—.

Little Things.
Littlo Martin boxes of homos nro
generally tho most happy and cosy;
little villages are nearer to being atoms
of a shattered paradise than anything
wo know of; and little fortunes bring
the most content, and little hopes the
least disappointments.
Little words are tho sweetest to
hear; little clmritios fly furthest, and
stay longest on the wing; little lakes
are the Btiliest, little hearts the fullest,
and little fartues the best tiled. Little

songs tlio most loved. And when na
ture would mako anything especially
rare aud beautiful, sho makes it littlo,
little pearls, little diamonds, little
dews.
Everybody calls that littlo, thoy love
best on earth. We once hoard a good
sort of a man speak of ids little wife,
< and we fancied that sho must he a per
fect little bijou of a wife. We snw
• her and sho weighed 210: we were
surprised. But then it was no joke ;
the man meant it. Ho could put his

other things besides; and wlmt was she
